Happy New Year from Me!

I wish you all you wish yourself for next year.  The next Email will have an attachment.  It will open safely...it's fully Virus checked....print it on A4 coloured parchment paper and frame it for your wall.

I always feel that at this time of year we should take stock of what we have achieved this past year and how we are going to gain from that - and propel ourselves forward.

To make our dreams come true it is good to realise that dreams only become a reality when they follow a sequence.  What is that sequence?

I have always remembered a great line...I don't know who ever said it to me.  It went: "See that new skyscraper building over there?  That was once a dream".  And when you think about it, everything you see around you and hear about you was once a 'dream' in someone's mind.  The skyscraper was the dream of some architect, sitting in front of his drawing board.  But first he learned how to be an architect.

Music dreams are the same.  To realise that 'skyscraper'...that Top Ten Hit, that Top Film Score, that principal piece at the BBC Proms....you have to do what the architect did.  You have to learn how to be a music maker.  Remember, he learned how to be an architect?

A dream can become a vision.

A vision can become an ambition....an ambition can become a yearning, a desire, an aspiration.

Add eagerness, persistence, attitude, longing and desire to an ambition and it becomes an overwhelming purpose.  You long for success, you yearn for it.

But the ambition and the dream cannot become a reality without the 'learning'.  Luck has no part in it.....'right time, right place' has no part in it. Knowing the right people has no part in it.  Oh, they can all help, but the help can only come if the 'dream' is a functioning reality.

Just like the architect with his dream for his skyscraper, if he does not have the knowledge to make his dream work, then no one will listen to him or even entertain his ideas for one second. But - if he has the knowledge to convert his dream to an exciting drawing, then his dream can become a reality.  Just like music, he has to impress the 'powers that be' with his dream...and he can only do that by using his knowledge to convey his thoughts - by putting it all on paper.

Do you have the musical knowledge?  Do you have the knowledge that will make YOU a star?  Because, and have no doubt about this, to be successful in music YOU have got to be the success story.  Your music will not stand on it's own.....surprised?  It is YOU that has to sell your music and convey it's worth.  It is YOU that has to have the knowledge.

Your best New Years Resolution?

"I will make 'me' a music success story in 2004"

And - to the best of my knowledge, the only place to get the necessary knowledge is The Serious Writers Guild at www.makehits.co.uk . Please advise me if you know another place?

The best book ever?

I recommend the book 'Think and Grow Rich', written by Napoleon Hill, to anyone that listens...whether they are in the music business or not.  Particularly if they are in the Music Business.  I had this comment from a new Member of The Serious Writers Guild:

"I was seeing certain successful people making comments that I could link back to Napoleon Hill.  DR. Dre, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis a whole Bunch of people.

As a matter of fact I don't know if you've seen the Alicia Keys new video but the song and the video reveals the secret in Think and Grow Rich. As a matter of fact the girl in the diner where the video is shot is reading Think and Grow Rich. And there are maybe thousands of people listening to the song and like the video but will never get. But they're buying it like crazy.

Charts:

UK

1) "Mad World" ...... Michael Andrews ft Gary Jules [shows that a unique idea will win through every time!]
2) "Christmas Time [Don't let the Bells End]"... The Darkness [a p*ss take?  Again a unique idea with a little raunchy innuendo?]
3) "Changes" .... Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne [Hmmmmmm! Maybe this was based on pure public awareness?]

USA

1) "Hey Ya!" OutKast
2) "The Way You Move" Outkast Featuring Sleepy Brown
3) "Milkshake" Kelis [I told you about this weeks ago?]

AUSTRALIA

1) "Shut Up" .... Black Eyed Peas  [My favourite track from 2003...stunning production and visuals]
2) "Predictable" .... Delta Goodrem
3)  "Hey Ya!" OutKast

An observation:

Amazingly the chart in the UK didn't change and the chart in the USA stayed exactly the same.

Toons to get:

Get the new Michael Buble - pronounced boob-lay [from Canada] album.  It has great arrangements, great tracks and great performances on.  If you like 'swing' and classic toons performed in an innovative way you will love this.  The arrangements use all the 'Protools' techniques and sequencing coupled with great swinging musicians...exactly the way I suggest my 'Serious Writers Guild' Members should think.  All the 'today' technology is there to be used - not to be sniped at....use it and combine it with your own particular style...who knows where you could land?

Music/Show Biz News:

Whitney Houston: There was a time in the singer's career when she had more smiles, more concert appearances and less facial bruises. Maybe her life will improve sooner than expected. Fox News reported that Houston and husband Bobby Brown spent Christmas apart and that she is back in New Jersey surrounded by family and friends - a bodyguard or too wouldn't hurt either. Let's hope her New Year's resolution is to remain free from abuse in any form, drug or physical. Life's too short to spend time in a mental gutter.

More 'thank-you's' and success stories [just this week!] Is yours here?

Hi  - I was amazed after I starting reading that you are in harmony with my purpose.  I just wanted to say thanks and explain my relief when I found out what kind of person you are.

"Dear Dec - Just a quickie - considering NS10s have been discontinued - what do you
think of the MSP10s that are being pitched as the NS10s 'evolutionary'
replacement?

I realise that you can get replacement parts for the NS10s but I don't really
wanna start building speakers as well as everything else (if I can avoid
it).

Without the NS10s to recommend - what would you suggest?

Thanks as always

Like most guys in the 'pro' side of the game we are blessed with having Yamaha NS10's.  They are just so good...and so Industry Standard....every studio has them, world wide, so, in theory, our material sounds the same in each studio.

Those white drivers in the black boxes send out a big message: "we make serious music here!"

I have not heard of any comparable speakers and guys are searching high and low to get their hands on original NS10's.  I would think they are now fetching a premium price.

Do not even think of making your own, with the speaker components.  The results will not be impressive.  There is a lot of black magic involved in tuning speakers.

I do not know the speakers you speak of.  At the end of the day, it seems the only way forward is to audition speakers in a shop that has a multiple speaker set up. [Guitar Amp and Keyboard Centre in Brighton...ask for Sangib... tell him Dec sent you]

Be careful you are not influenced by the 'nice' sound of the speakers.  NS10's are extremely 'flat' and accurate in response and do not go down, in frequency, past 60 Hz.

I use the NS10's in conjunction with a pair of Kef Correlli speakers.  They are switchable so I can hear what the track sounds like on the NS10's then switch to the warm full range sound of the domestic Hi Fi Kef speakers.  I also have a custom built pair of  powerful 'Nightfire' studio monitors, powered by a Yamaha 1000 Watt amplifier, for really loud, full range listening.  I call that 'listening in full Technicolor!

Check out Nightfire by Emailing Ian Warrener at iannightfire@pa-direct.co.uk .... tell him Dec sent you!

Thought for the end of the Year

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their  wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, even where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could  sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats.

Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every colour and a fine view of  the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail,  the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and  imagine  the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing  by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it.  In  his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and  called the hospital  attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the  switch, and after  making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to  take  his  first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn  to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his  deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this  window. The nurse  responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said,  "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Epilogue: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

"Today is a gift, that's why it is called the present."
