MENU:

Craig just missed....aaaaah!

I was hoping to have some great news this week.

My long time pal, Craig Bishop, AKA DJ Fergus was attempting to break the Guinness Book of Records time for the longest non-stop DJ session ... standing at 78 hours.  Makehits backed him all the way ..  He set up shop at 'Flava' a fabulous club in Eastbourne and all the gang supported him...calling in to keep him awake and just plain making sure he was Okay.

Sadly after 71 hours he passed out ... was violently ill and had to give in...sad.

By the way...check out Flava.....what a club...what a way forward for the future.....have a night out there Flava, Terminus Road, Eastbourne.

Lesson to be learned?

There is always a lesson to be learned from any situation.  I was fully sure that he had 'done his homework', you know, got all the medical advice, the advice from long distance athletes and, most of all, advice from the SAS [the most elite fighting force in the world - with enormous knowledge of 'survival']

It turned out he had NO ADVICE...can you believe it?  Only two nurses standing by 'in case'.

So it all gets back to prepare, prepare, prepare.  I am quite sure if he had researched the task properly and called in favours from the folk I mentioned, he would have walked it.  And strangely, all those experts, just like myself, enjoy helping....what's the great adage?  "If you help enough people to get what they want, then you have have everything YOU want"

"I've learned....
That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes."

Mariah Carey joins my special club!

Very few recording artists ever manage two in the top five at the same time....may I blow my own trumpet and say that I did it with my band!  'Diane' and 'I Believe'

And now Mariah Carey ... check out the USA chart below.

The 4th great method for additional dosh

I have been hard at work fulfilling my promise to you all.  I promised I would find the ten best methods for providing additional dosh while you pursue your great ambition...to have mega success in the business you love...The Music Business.  Even today I listened in as Kevin here in the office spoke to a guy with many 'A' levels from school plus a degree and he was absolutely skint trying to make money in music.

I heard Kevin say to him that the road to success in music is not one you stumble across by accident...you have to learn how to make money in music.... at www.makehits.com.

#4 Method

Qualified Sound Engineer www.makehits.com/moneymaking.htm

The beauty of Sound Engineering Course is that it isn't a course you ever have to go to a classroom to take. It is offered through something called Distance Learning.  It is fantastic that you can end up with a City and Guilds 1820 Pt.3 accreditation.

If you have never heard of 'distance learning', it is like a correspondence course....and many great writers and artists have got their success from them...think of 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music'...same thing.

The 4th great method for providing additional dosh while you study and acquire the knowledge to make those mountains of dosh in music is explained at www.makehits.com/moneymaking.htm .  It is a course lasting 24 weeks which can give you a City and Guilds accreditation and open the doors to the world of sound engineering.  Would you like to work at the sound desk for major shows?  For great studios?  TV?  Radio?  Films? Video shoots?

I know, from first hand experience, that it is mighty hard to find a guy with sound qualifications....mighty hard!  At least twice a year my band will be in a position where our four regular guys will be unavailable at the same instant in time....then we have to find a sound engineer who knows his stuff.  It's hard to even start to find one.

Apart from the fact that I could not envisage a qualified sound engineer ever being short of engagements, it is a more than interesting skill and cannot help but assist your quest for mighty music success.

"I've learned....

How many countries will help the USA in the Hurricane flood disaster?

I heard the Dutch are great in dealing with low level flooded land?

It astonishes me the way the USA gets criticised from all sides all year round....that country never seems to do right in the eyes of many in the world.

However - when there is a disaster, be it a natural disaster or man made, an accident or a deliberate act, who is there first on the scene to offer not only physical help but financial help as well?

You guessed it!  The good old USA.  And that is to be admired.  They are first on the scene every time.

So how many countries have rushed to help the USA in their hour of need?  You won't even need one hand to count them...Zip I would say.  And that is a sad reflection of the amount of hatred and jealousy in this world.

And Mariah has joined the exclusive club of those with two in the top five...extremely hard to achieve...trust me.  The story of how my band did it is legendary.  Check out www.thebachelors.co.uk/biography.htm

August is generally a quiet month for the music industry. Most people (and staff) are away on holiday and to push major new releases on the public when most of them have other things on their minds is generally a bit of a waste of effort. Nonetheless, this year has been the quietest August I can remember for a long time, all of which makes the events of this week in the UK seem so much more startling.

A glut of big new releases has resulted in a wholesale changing of the guard as far as the singles chart is concerned. Of last week's Top 10 only the Top 3 survive and 10 out of the Top 15 records are new entries. That is a lot of new music.

Ruling the roost in triumphant style are Oasis who shoot straight to Number One with 'The Importance Of Being Idle'.

Compressors?  Focusrite?

Hello Dec,

Dec I was wondering what were your thoughts on Avalon Products. Do you think Focusrite are better so far as Mic Pre are concerned? And what are the compressors that you use? I am looking to replace my current pre and comp.

 Q***** E****

My Reply:

Q*****

Avalon are not much used in Europe.

It is important to stick to Industry Standard...if only for the resale value when you want to trade up.  Also, they do tend to be better.

Be wary of 'brand name' over 'price' ... in other words, 'up their own bums' sound engineers etc. will rubbish anything reasonably priced....Behringer, for example, because of the brand name....but Behringer are marketed at the right price for the product and most of their gear [not the mixers or amps, speakers] are Industry Standard.

Behringer Composer ....excellent - used in  most studios [including mine], valve version is particularly good.

Behringer Multicom .. 4 in 1 compressor that is excellent [used in my band's concert sound rig].

Drawmer, DBX have been around a long time and sadly are overly transparent....it is hard to know they are switched on!!!

The TLA Audio ...Fatman 1 stereo vale compressor is a current trendy compressor...I love it ... you certainly know it is on.

As regards plug ins, the Bomb Factory is the current trendy compressor for all things Hip Hop/R&B and check out Joe Meek MC2 Compressor bundled with Pro Tools LE.

Focusrite have the best name in pre amps ... a good range of models to suit all needs and all pockets.

Always be aware, Q*****, of the logic : "sh*t in, sh*t out" ... in other words there is no equipment made that will make a mediocre performance good, be that instrumental or vocal .... excellent equipment will make a great performance spectacular though.

The gags:  [good one from Willie]

A guy gets marooned on a desert island. Time passes slowly as he learns
how to survive, make fire, catch fish, etc. One year passes slowly into another
year. He is very lonely.

Then after about ten years, he is sitting on the beach (for a change), when
out of the sea comes a beautiful woman in a divers wet suit. It hugs
her figure tightly.  He is amazed and begins to tell her about his lonely life and how hard
it has been adapting to this difficult life, going without the things he
has missed so badly.

"So", she says" it must be a very long time since you had a cigarette", and
with that she unzips a pocket and pulls out a packet of Pall Malls.
He is amazed and smokes one with enthusiasm.

"So", she says, "it must be a very long time since you had a drink",
and with that she unzips another pocket and pulls out a cocktail shaker
filled  with ice and a dry Martini.

He is even more amazed and drinks it down with relish.
She looks at him with a sultry smile and says, "Well, how long is it
since you played around?"

He steps back in  amazement. "Don't tell me you've got a set of golf
clubs in there as well
