Guy Like Me Has To Keep Learning!

The more I learn, the more I have to learn.  I have started a new regime of learning.  Before I go to bed each night I spend an hour simply studying and learning.....why?

At the moment I have a new Triton keyboard.  A tasty bit of gear, but I intend to get the most out of it.  And that entails studying the manual inside out.  I would have to say, an excellent user friendly manual and the keyboard itself is extremely logical.  Based more on Internet/Website/Computer visuals.

    Korg Triton

The other bit of kit is a Yamaha Motif.  I have used it in the past, but now I want to get the most out of it.  Again study, study, study.

Then a new mailing system for 'One Minute With Dec' and all the 'Serious Writers Guild' stuff  www.makehits.com .  I have stuck with Imedia for a while, but I feel that we should take the mailing back in-house where we will have more reliability.  We will still use Imedia but we have new software to improve service to our 'gang out there'...so more learning.  It is no good relying on IT guys [our guys are great] because the big problems always happen when the staff go home...and poor Dec is left holding the can.

So, why not join me in a one hour learning session per night?  It is amazing how much you absorb in a short few days.

Check out the 'best' of the testimonials.  www.makehits.com/testimonials.htm  and www.makehits.co.uk/applause.htm .  They are getting so tasty now!

Beware Card Problems.

Yesterday, I went into a pizza restaurant to pick up an order that I had called in. I paid for it by using my personal Client Card   which, of course, is linked directly to my checking account. The young man behind the counter took my card, swiped it, then laid it flat on the counter.

While he waited, he picked up his cell phone and started  dialing.  I noticed the phone, because it is the same model I have.

Then I heard a click that sounded like my phone sounds when I take a picture. He then gave me back my card, but kept the phone in his hand as if he was still pressing buttons. Meanwhile, I'm thinking:

I wonder what he is taking a picture of.  My credit card.   About five  seconds later,   I heard the chime that tells you that the picture had been saved.

Yes, he played it off well, and because  had we not had the same kind of phone, I probably would never have known  what happened.  Needless to say, I immediately cancelled that card.

Whenever you are using your credit cards, take caution and  don't be careless.  Notice who is standing near you and what they are doing when you use your card.  Be aware of cell phones, because many people
have a camera  phone these days. When you are in a restaurant and the waiter/waitress  brings your card and receipt for you to sign, make sure you scratch  the number off.

The truth is that they can get you even when you are careful, but don't make it easy for them.

So When I Lose My Card?

I don't know whether you are like me, I tend to mislay my cards.  They just seem to disappear.  Are you the same?  Happened a few weeks ago.  I used a card in a garage, didn't see them again.  I would guarantee they are down the back of a sofa somewhere.  But I didn't take chances; cancelled the lot.  There is a new service which is worth checking out.  If you lose your cards, or suspect them stolen, you only need one call to cancel the lot.  Ask your card company.  They also insure you for losses.

Also - Beware gig dressing rooms.

Vicci Esselle was playing a gig the other night.  Left her stage costumes in the dressing room while she did sound check.  Came back and every costume had been nicked.  The cost is considerable but the inconvenience is worse.  She is appearing with Lionel Richie next week at the Silverstone Formula One Bash ... so her costumes have to be remade.

Always ensure the security on dressing room doors is good.  Consider the problems if your nice Gibson or Korg Triton is nicked?

Visuals are 80% and music is 20%

I can't count the number of times I have used that phrase recently when asked to advise about success in our industry.  I came across this great advice.  And girls, don't think that this is just advice for the fellas:

If you want to increase muscle size then the most important thing is that you need to be adding weight progressively.
Be patient though because overworking your muscles can actually cause damaging effects. In the beginning you will probably see results fairly quickly but over time your muscle mass gains will seem less apparent. This is common and happens because as your body gets used to the workout routine it knows what to expect. Try alternating your workouts and doing different varieties of exercises.  This will keep your body guessing.

Date for your Diary?

My big benefit for 'Lark in The Park Charitable Foundation' is set for 11th July [Monday] at The Congress Theatre in Eastbourne.  It is a 3,000 seater and we intend to raise 500,000 UKP during this year to fund the purchase of a property for a residential home for Special Needs Children in the Eastbourne district.

Toyota are behind us as well as Eastbourne Gazette and Courier plus Stanleys the major betting shop chain.  So get your seats.

Artists already agreed for the show entitled 'A Gala Evening in the Presence of Jeremy Beadle' are Rick Wakeman, Joe Brown, Bruce Welch OBE, and almost definite is David Essex.

Do you have trouble fitting everything into your day?

One of the biggest problems today is actually getting your day's work done, if you are in business for yourself.  I know!  And you should be in business for yourself if you are serious about your music career.  My phone simply doesn't stop and the Emails are non-stop [up to 400 a day now].  "How do you wire up a jack plug to an XLR plug, Dec?"...yep....that was the last question - a few minutes ago.

"After I learned to do the basics, I also often fell into the trap that I want YOU to avoid. I want you to do two things. First, learn to say "NO" and secondly, learn to prioritize.

Learning to say "no" can be hard.  It's human nature to want to do favors for others. We want to be liked. We believe that if we say "no" to requests for assistance, we will be liked less.

Until you learn to say "no" when you have a full plate, others will control your time and decide what you do... when.  You can't afford to put that much control over your time, your business, and your LIFE into the hands of others. So, it's critical to master the skill of saying "no" sometimes.  You can do it politely :-)

Learning to prioritize is the second essential that you must master.  Otherwise, you'll simply find yourself doing the easy, enjoyable things that produce little long-term benefit, while you ignore the very things that you should be doing.

There are a lot of systems for prioritizing, and you have to choose the one that works best for you. For me, it involves making a list of the things that I must get done and then doing the most important ones first. This takes firmness and being honest with yourself.  You have to do the most important things first because, then, if something doesn't get done, it will be the less important things that you simply can't fit in.

In prioritizing, you do need to seek balance though.  Things you probably don't want to compromise are your health and your relationships with your family. Make those a higher priority than business.

It's been a while that I had time to write to you - but things have been busy. Perfect proof that YOUR way to do business is right - we are one of 10 bands selected for the finals in a competition to play "Download" this year, great publicity - "Rock Hard" in Germany love our CD as well and we have our first gig in April which will be packed because of the increase in the mailing list.

Chart Comment:

It certainly looks like the USA has caught the UK fever in changing the Top Three quickly...hope it's not a trend?

In the UK, Hooray! No Elvis in the Top Three.  There is the sound of cheers all round as a buttock-clenchingly long run of Number One hits finally comes to an end. Tony Christie and his alleged collaborator Peter Kay chalk up a second week at Number One making 'Amarillo' the first single to spend more than a solitary seven days at the top of the charts since Band Aid 20 back at Christmas. Since then we have seen (deep breath now) Steve Brookstein, Elvis (twice), Ciara, Elvis again, Eminem, U2, J-Lo, Nelly, Stereophonics and McFly all take a turn at the top - a run of 13 weeks with a different single at Number One each time. This has been the longest such run since the 14 week spell that ended in September 2000, and just to show how suddenly things on the singles chart had sped up, it was not until the end of May last year that we saw the 11th new Number One hit of 2004.

 Subscriber's Section:

An unusual one this week.  A Member has huge success....but the next step can be so crucial:

Dear Dec, Please I need your help, I really do! This is about M***, my son who is on the cruise ships. He is now being approached nearly every contract concerning his wonderful performance. He is being asked who is his manager. A well known director from Britain, I am waiting his name from M***, told him this week that he could see him as the new Bruce Forsythe. I think I should be doing something this end to help my son.

Do you know someone who would manage and advise M***? Looks very much like he is ready to take the next step from the ship. This is a big step and it has to be made in the right way, I have butterflies in my tummy just writing this, so that is a good sign!

Hope you and your family are well, I will wait to hear from you after Easter.

Kind regards P****** O**********.

Answer:

P******

I can certainly introduce you to excellent management.

However......

And there is always a 'however'.

A cruise ship audience is what we call a 'pie' audience, particularly when the entertainer is the cruise director.  That is not damping your spirits, it is telling you what will be said to you by proposed management.

At the moment, there is absolutely nothing to be gained by M*** having a manager.  As I always say: "what is there to manage?".  A manager cannot wave a magic wand and suddenly get an audition to shoot a guy to stardom...that is a fantasy in the mind of novices...and your son is not a novice, by any means.

Your son would have to prove his worth in a normal stage situation...say a major benefit [charity bash].  Even then, this would be hard to achieve because no one will know who he is, or what he is.  He simply would have to prove his talent in all the normal ways.  That is the way it works.

I would suggest the best way forward would be for M*** to strive to get land based gigs, so then, those that matter can be invited to see him....and that is 'hard'.  But infinitely easier than getting a management company to go on a ship for a cruise?

There is a hidden danger, always in having success in a 'local' situation, and a ship is a 'local' situation.  It is the same with artists coming from Ireland [as I did] and South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden.  It is reasonably easy to be a major star in those countries...I know, because I was, at age 17, in Ireland.  That is what is called "a big fish in a small sea"....but when you actually get into the 'big sea' i.e. the UK or USA mainstream Show Biz, it is tough!  We had to literally swallow our pride, forget about our past success and start all over again in the dumps and dives in England or the USA.

Would M*** leave the security and comfort of his present, cosy, well paid environment to do that?

I wonder?  I did!

There is a lot to think about.  But success is there to be had.

I know a dozen entertainers who practically 'live' on the ships.  Every audience tell them the same as M*** has been told.  Sadly they have a comfy life, no responsibilities and they never get anywhere.  Suddenly they are 55 and worried.

The gags:  [Political this week!]

Walking Eagle

President Bush was invited to address  a major gathering of the American Indian Nation last weekend in Arizona.  He spoke for almost an hour on his future plans for increasing every Native  American's present standard of living.  He referred to his career as Governor of Texas, how he had signed "YES" 1,237 times -- for every Indian  issue that came to his desk for approval.  Although the President was vague on the details of his plan, he seemed most enthusiastic about his future ideas for helping his "red brothers".

At the conclusion of his speech, the  Tribes presented the President with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name  -- Walking Eagle.  The proud President then departed in his motorcade,  waving to the crowds.  A news reporter later inquired of the group of  chiefs as to how they came to select the new name given to the  President.

They explained that Walking Eagle is the name given to a bird so full of sh*t it can no longer fly.
