Check out the equipment first?

just love telling 'beware' stories.  In other words, stories that will warn you to beware of certain situations.  Reason being that if catastrophes can happen to me [with yonks of experience] then it can certainly happen to you.  so beware!

I raided my bank account and purchased two pieces of equipment that I have being toying with and talking about for quite a few weeks.  the Korg Triton [phenomenal] and The Yamaha Motif Module.  Now, I always say that it is sensible to have a pool of equipment available locally among trusted good music makers.  Reason being that at no one time are all the guys wanting to use all the gear.  So, it makes a lot of sense to have an arrangement where you can borrow from each other.  Fraught with danger, but if you get it right it can work wonders for you.  I have been borrowing a Yamaha Motif for yonks...and now felt I should buy one.....so IO did.

The day of the mega session.

I checked out the Triton before this important session I was doing....perfect.  Spent an hour each night studying the manual...and thought that I knew it backwards....wrong!

Who could have foreseen that the Triton [as it comes from the factory] is set up to over-ride every thing computer wise in the studio.  So, forget about setting a tempo from the master computer.  The Triton simply takes over.  Of course, in all those situations you look for the most difficult solution.  I re recorded the master tempo track six times....wrong!!!!!

I spent an hour delving into the computer to solve the midi mismatch problem....wrong!!!!!

I spent an age touring through the manual....through the Korg Internet help line....wrong!  Then the telephone help line: "Sorry, no helpline is available today!"  [PS. I still have not had an answer re the problem from their Email helpline]

We decided to scrap the idea of using the Triton as a mother keyboard.  Then we decided to 'ring a friend'.  Everyone in the studio had a pal who 'knew a thing or two'.  What a waste of time.

So we ended up re setting up the old tried and tested Yamaha SY55, that has been the mother keyboard in my studio for years.  Job done!

Lesson?

Always do a complete dummy run with new equipment before the guys arrive for the session.  Saves time, saves money and saves a lot of embarrassment!

Good lyric stuff from a Member:

"A lyric is not a poem because of the speed at which words go by. Lyrics are not on a page, so there isn't time to reflect and ponder all the different possible meanings. Hence, lyrics can't be ambiguous, which in turn means that you have to be very careful about your use of figurative language in a song.

There's such a thing as vowel sound cadence in lyrics where vowel sounds in stressed positions actually descend/ascend a scale naturally when the lyric is spoken. (that blew me away)

You need to have a clear idea of the time and place in which the 'action' of the song is taking place. Not having this in your mind can result in inconsistent imagery and sequences that are hard to follow.

Songs need to communicate one clear emotion.

The Music Business is a lot to do with self promotion

I am lucky to get a lot of great stuff sent to me on different angles in the Music Business...check this out:

"It amazed me to discover that over 87 percent of the people I surveyed felt extremely uncomfortable with the concept of self-promotion.
Many of these same people hold themselves back from too many missed opportunities to become successful because of it.

Where did the fear of self-promotion come from?  Many learned the opposite from their parents as they were growing up.  They where taught to believe that it was not polite to talk about themselves; if they do, it will come across as pushy, rude or they will appear to have a big ego.

Some parents may have taught that, and also said, "Go out in the world on your own and be successful." This combo-belief goes against the grain of all sales and marketing success!

How can you be successful in music if you don't tell others what you do and how you can help them?  You can't! If you don't self-promote, you are holding yourself back from too many missed opportunities and the success that you truly deserve!

Undeniably, there is unethical self-promotion.  We've all witnessed it, and maybe even lost business to it. But unethical or ineffective self-promotion is not what we're discussing.

You can do successful self - promoting with class, ethics and service to others. Begin to look at self-promotion from this day forward as serving others instead of self-serving.

I'm sure you are passionate about music and truly want to help your customers. If that is the case - don't you want to help more and more people that could use your services and/or products?

You can't do that if you don't successfully self-promote and tell more people about what you do.  Tell others why you are the expert and share success stories from your customers.  Your self-promotion, when done well, helps people to get what they desire.

The most successful people in the world are all self-promoters.

These are the people that talk in elevators!  In fact, behavioural scientists, George Dudley and Shannon Goodson, have made a career out of studying the science of self-promotion to prove it.  Their assessment identifies the ways in which we unconsciously avoid self-promotion and limit our success.  Their research studies discovered that "self-promotion is directly related to success."

It you don't toot your own horn, you can't enjoy the music.

What do you think?

Interesting insight from a Member of The Serious Writers Guild www.makehits.com

"Hello Dec!

Just wanted to share something amusing, but also quite sad, with you.

A couple weeks ago, I placed an ad on the ASCAP collaborator's corner looking for a co-writer.  I've had several responses and all of these people fit your description of the wanna-be songwriter who thinks he knows it all but knows absolutely nothing.

Some of them are actually a bit talented but still haven't got a clue about the process of how to write a hit song.  They must not listen at all to pop music.

One guy wrote to me and said he had a lot of hits (although they are just figments of his imagination.) His stuff is kind of catchy but they all sound like Broadway show tunes.  He truly believes that's what producers/artists are looking for.

I'm saying all of this to let you know how much I have appreciated your course.  It's been a real eye-opener and my whole perception about making records and the music industry has changed dramatically.  On top of that, I'm glad (or I hope) I am no longer in the ranks of the amateurs who have been contacting me.

Have a wonderful day!

With gratitude,
Luanne Hunt"

Success Stories:

[I only print one a week of the hundreds I receive.  Go to www.makehits.com/testimonials.htm for stories that will amaze you and fill you full of hope for YOUR future.]

"This week it's more rehearsal, more live shows, more database, and excitement.  Dec, I'm not sure what sort of switch has been flipped in me, but these days I've been walking ten miles a day, up super-early, and making amazing progress on all of our endeavours.  We're all working (playing) super-hard and having fun just about each waking moment.  I now swear that success has nothing to do with external factors.

Thanks again Dec for all of your insights and help, and we'll keep you posted as always to our progress.

Best Regards,  Steve Zaborski [Canada]

Chart Comment:

Dear oh Dear...what a run Peter Kay has had at the top of the British chart...even after the disaster of Tony Christie singing live on our UK telly with no mic. switched on for 45 secs.  What an embarrassment...he couldn't have known he just kept on singing....what a 'pro'?

The single now matches the run of Black Eyed Peas' 'Where Is The Love' from 2003 to gain joint honours as the longest running chart-topper of the decade so far. Next on the horizon is the job of equalling the seven week run of 'Believe' by Cher from back in 1998, and would you really back against it? Six weeks at the top is also enough to make 'Amarillo' the longest running charity Number One of all time. Yes, the single was released in aid of Comic Relief - surely we can't all have forgotten this?

And the download chart is showing it's teeth in being different to the combined UK chart.

A question I get a lot...literally how do I start?  Shoe string gear?  Or full Mac driven solid gold stuff?

Hi Dec!

A quick question!

Do you know a good but small ear protector?? Has to fit with a headphone! During my DJ sets my ears get very tired and I don´t want to ruin them.

Any suggestion?

There are very many.

The professional variety are available from Studiospares  www.studiospares.com .

However there are excellent small devices available at most drug stores.  Q-zone gives a low pass filter or a high pass filter.  they call it 'ambient noise filter [high frequency] and Restful snoring filter [Low frequency]

Us pilots us 'Earplanes' again available in drug stores...excellent sound filtering and will give almost complete silence if required.  These are all plastic.  There are many others used by clay pigeon shooters [excellent].  Drum shops are an excellent source [our drummer uses them under earphones].

Try them all!  They are inexpensive and you have to find the ones that give the best results for you.  Then you can re purchase the chosen one at will!  If you go the fully 'pro' route it may cost you a fortune, and in my opinion, the results will not be as good as 'trial and error'.  You have to be comfortable and happy yourself.  Your ears are valuable...look after them.

The gags:  [The old ones are the best?]

A faith healer asked Leroy how his old friend was. Leroy responded, "He's pretty sick".
The faith healer said, "He's not really sick, he just thinks he is".
A few days later, the faith healer ran into Leroy again, and again, asked about his old friend.
Leroy answered, "Oh, he just thinks he's dead".
