A sage bit of advice from David re Firewall technology
Dear Dec and Team
Just a note regarding firewire technology, for anyone who is considering getting "all those channels" over a simple firewire cable...
STOP!
It is very tempting to believe that just because an equipment manufacturer boasts 50+ channels of I/O over a firewire cable to believe that when you part with your hard earned cash for that interface, and plug it in, that YOUR system will suddenly become that.
Truth is, it probably won't.
Audio is synchronous. Any shortfall in performance results in clicks and pops, ruining your hard work. Worse, you may not detect those nasty digital clicks until far too late in the recording process when they will be uncorrectable.
Thing is, firewire was never designed for synchronous traffic. So you are asking the wrong job of the interface. It's great for hard drives, but not audio playback.
PCI based interfaces will outperform firewire. Choose a PCI based solution over Firewire - at the moment.
Second point. Due to a problem with SP2 of Windows XP, if you try running firewire 800 without manually replacing files from the earlier version of XP, your bandwidth with QUARTER, not double... That's a drop from 400Mb/s to 100Mb/s. Microsoft have acknowledged their error in implementing FW800, but that's not a fix. You have to copy files from XP SP1 to get back to where you were.
FW800 is not widely used yet, and many manufacturers have yet to fully understand how to put the cards together properly. Again, they will be fine for hard drives, but NOT for audio interfaces.
This kind of badly built technology is a can of worms that will get you back onto the "studio fix tech support" mindset, and not writing songs. If you count your time as precious, my advice to anyone thinking about FireWire boxes is to steer clear.
Things will doubtless get better though, as standards evolve. But that's at least a year to you and me!
with kind regards

Charts:
USA [my thanks to Charles in the USA for supplying this]
(1) We Belong Together, Mariah Carey
(2) Hollaback Girl, Gwen Stefani (3) Just a Lil Bit, 50 Cent1) Tupac Ft Elton John - 'Ghetto Gospel'
2) Crazy Frog - 'Axel F'3) James Blunt - 'You're Beautiful'
Amazing how 2 Pac is spelled so different on each mention ... and Elton hardly gets a mention in the success of that chart entry. Sort of repeats my warning above recording 'covers' in a hurry?
James Blunt? His stuff is a little too underproduced for me...but the album is good. The chart hit is probably the best produced on the album.
However
the top of the chart has an interesting and decidedly unusual look to it this
week. This could be an aberration, a genuine one-off thanks to some strange
circumstances - or it could be the first signs of a growing new trend. I'll tell
you which in about five years time.
Album to buy? Get the Gwen Stefani
'Love, Angel, Music, Baby' ... stunning!

Here is a very interesting and pertinent question [my, that's a big word?]
Hi Dec - I am looking forward to my second mailing of the course I read the first several times on the day it came so as not to miss anything, and it really is helpful and eye opening.
Have you got any advice for someone who wants to do free work experience with a record company on how to approach them to request this? Do you ever offer that yourself to young people? Best Wishes S******
My Reply:
S******
Interesting question. I know a few guys who have actually pulled it off.
The most important part is knowing what to write and who to write your letter to.
In the 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' program I give great ideas on letter writing, simply because a letter works, every time.
It is important to identify the Company/studio you want to work with. For instance it is no good offering your services to a Christian Studio [such as ICC] if you are a devout Muslim. Or an extreme Indie Company where everyone is stoned all day long, if you are a convent educated girl...see what I mean?
So, research the Company you want to be with and then construct an exciting letter telling them how much they will benefit from having YOU on board.
In business this is called: "what are you going to bring to the table?"
You could offer your services for two weeks for free....and tell them that if they like you, and more to the point, if you like them, then you can negotiate a salary [again I explain all about negotiation in 'How To Make A $Million']
As regards getting hands on experience in a recording studio....this is hard to get. The reason is that most studios are owner driven. In other words, 90% of the work is done by one guy in front of a computer and mixing desk. Quite frankly, novices get in the way. This is why it is so important for you to be able to 'offer' something that they will benefit by...even if it is the fact you make the greatest Cappuccino in the world....or you bring in home baked cookies each day...or you have an exceptional back vocals voice with sensational ideas.
It is all about being able to write that sensational exciting letter to get a 'meet' and then stunning them with your talking abilities whilst offering them an offer they can't refuse.
Simple?
PS: I never offer work experience, for all the reasons above....a novice would simply annoy me to death and get under my feet.
PPS: S******, just remember that there are 50,000 semi illiterate twits trying to get work experience in studios. You have to prove your value right from the first word you write in your letter.

The gags: [a little rude...but Hey!]
The Healing Evangelist
Grandma and Grandpa were watching a religious healing program on TV.
The Evangelist
called to all who wanted to be healed, to put one hand on the TV and the other
on the body part they wanted healed.
Grandma hobbled to the TV and put one hand on the TV and other on her arthritic
hip. Grandpa made his way to the set and put one hand the TV and other on his
crotch.
Grandma looked at him with disgust, "You just don't understand
you old coot . . . the purpose of this program is to heal the sick, not raise
the dead."
