Now at Number 7 in the Official UK Album chart [ I promised to tell how we did it?]

Number 2 in Amazon releases for this week...
Number 5 in the Amazon Climbers...
Record of the week in Sainsbury's ... featured album in Asda/Wal-Mart, Tesco, Woolworth, HMV
And most important of all.....

Number 7 in the UK official Mid Week Album chart!  And climbing.... ahead of Rhianna, Madonna and Scouting for Girls

I do feel that it is important for you to know how the whole deal works in music.  The business side, the organisational side, royalties etc. and promotion.

When we were asked to be involved in 'I Believe - The Very Best of The Bachelors' by Universal, I made absolutely sure that there were recently recorded tracks on there ... that is so important, otherwise the public just say: "oh no, not another 'best of' album with ancient material."

The plan came off big time.  The track which is getting all the attention is 'Somewhere' which Con and I recorded about three months ago ... we put it straight in the act we present - and every night it gets a total standing ovation .... now all the radio stations are picking up on it ... could be a single?

"Pessimism is an excuse for not trying and a guarantee to
a personal failure."

So what have I learned in the past weeks? [ all the stuff I write about works! ]

What I learned in the past weeks is that every single bit of advice I give the Members of The Serious Writers Guild is totally correct and when followed 100% works with a vengeance ....  hard, smart work ...  just a few points:

1) Enthusiasm is king ... for your music, for the way you look, the way you act and behave and particularly the way you talk - as in, interviews [I must have done over 100 in the past week ... non stop, back to back] ... I have two major interviews this afternoon .... interviews are mostly done through what are called 'continuity studios' ... using a system called ISDN ... that gives perfect digital quality down a phone line to the main studio of the TV or Radio station you are talking to ... you will be expected to know how the system operates as they simply show you into the studio and leave you to it!

2) Knowledge ..... you have to know everything about the music industry, how PRS [Performing Right Society] works and how to inform them of your involvement in your album/single ... best to have your own Publishing Company ... that way you get 100% of the royalties instead of 50% that a Publishing Company will let you have .... see http://www.makehits.co.uk/publishing.htm .. where you can start your own company for less than £100.

You have to know how PPL and VPL work [Phonographic Performance Limited] ... or the equivalent in your country .. that way you pick up royalties every time your tracks are played ... it is a royalty specifically for the performer.  You have to know how to apply and join ... all in 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music" at http://www.makehits.com

The knowledge has to extend to being able to record and edit complete medleys ... solo songs .... a great knowledge of ProTools - for all the different type of back tracks of the particular song required by TV shows ... also being able to write the complete arrangements on music manuscript paper for the orchestras which are backing you, either live or miming .... again, I give The Members 'real' advice about how to learn these skills.  It all starts with 'How to Make A $Million From Your Music'

3) Love of the Industry .. to be successful you have to be totally in love with this business .... be prepared to walk over dead bodies to get there .... you have to be prepared for little sleep... no drinking ... no late nights ... looking good and wearing Versace, Dior, Dolce & Gobanna plus a little of Armani - think I'm kidding?   Think again!  Tan shop?  This is a $Million Industry and the successful guys know how important it is to look a $Million ... especially when you walk into 'The Ivy' to celebrate entering the album chart at Number 9 in the first few days ... now Number 7 ... The Ivy is probably the most exclusive Show Biz restaurant in London.

“Keep your eyes on the prize and don’t turn back.” Bill Clinton

Be rested and look fit and healthy [booze and late nights are a recipe for disaster]

It is interesting that Universal are very keen to make sure we are rested between interviews/radio/TV promos.

I have kept a lot of the itineraries from our Number One days in the sixties/seventies and one point that shocks anyone who sees them is that there was never any thought given to making sure we were rested and fit.  In fact, I always advise new writers/music makers to ensure that they have calm periods in their schedule ... I didn't and I paid the price!

You have to have time to write, to think and most of all, rehearse.  I freak out when I remember standing in front of a wall to wall session orchestra with no idea what vocals to sing.  We once did a whole album like that!  Produced by a huge name producer who could not produce a rabbit out of a hat ... I ended up producing the entire album, wrote all the vocal arrangements and mixed it ... and got no credits.

"Great minds have purposes; little minds have wishes." Washington Irving

The  UTube phenomenon? [ and a sad tale of Lena Zavaroni ]

The UTube phenomenon keeps rushing on ... loads of my band's stuff on there through the ages .... latest is a clip from a UK major TV series with a great tiny talent who sadly succumbed to that dreaded scourge, anorexia ... died a few years ago .... sad loss ... just see what an amazing talent she was at a tender age.   On a TV series we did.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PsJOzAJJc_g&feature=related    How about those outfits?  And the hair?

Lena Zavaroni .... RIP .... I produced her last album .. but she became too ill to promote it .. what a loss.  She even performed with the great Frank Sinatra.

Now check the latest UTube?  [someone has posted the 'This Morning' TV spot we did on Monday last]

From the silly 70's UTube clip to the latest .... nowadays, I admit I have to eat carefully, lots of crunches/sit-ups and jogging - plus all the skin tone products I can find ... by the way, Herbalife always have done, and still  produce, the best nutrition products and skin products for Show Biz. .... if you can't find a distributor Email me!

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oljh85URbtQ  All orchestrated and arranged by 'mois'.

Now there is a lesson to learn ... always have a 3rd. eye watching for detail ... I didn't check Con's make up and they put a little too much white around the eyes.... have a look and never let it happen to you .... my fault really ... I should have checked!

Subscriber's Section [ remembering lyrics? ]

"Dear Dec

I have a small problem and need your help. Over the years of songwriting
I've used a repertoire book when playing my songs and now I seem to have
difficulty (or a lack of confidence) in remembering the lyrics to a large
range of material. I've got used to having the words in front of me, which I don't
scrutinise but refer to as a reminder while playing and singing.

Often at small venues I've seen performers with music stands for their
song sheets - what's your view on this? And do you have any tips for
remembering lyrics?

Sorry for delay ... been living at Cumberland HotelLondon for a while with back to back TV/Radio etc.

Reading from lyrics on stage is a bad habit to get into.  I would suggest that, if they are your own lyrics, then they may not be 'great' lyrics?  I have always found that great, well written, commercial lyrics are easy to remember and badly written ones are hard .... perhaps you simply have too many words?  As my brother always says when he is expected to remember a huge amount of words: "how the h*ll am I expected to remember all these?" ... Great songs have very few words ..

'Somewhere' which is getting huge reaction on our chart album 'I Believe - The Best of The Bachelors' has so few words ... but it is a classic.

Yes, we all find it difficult to remember lyrics for the first half dozen times we sing them .... some guys write cue words on their hands ... or even on shirt cuffs!  Some will write in big type ... the cue words to lines, and place them on the floor or on a monitor speaker.

Most big artists now have the lyrics running on autocue ... a computer screen that looks like a wedge monitor.  Barbra Streisand got bad revues for having them projected on the back wall of Wembley Arena .. I am told she has big trouble remembering words.  Mainly because she does not tour constantly as Con and I do.

The big problem is with artists who are not performing regularly .... there can also be problems with performing in strange venues ... we have that problem .. for instance, performing one of our hits on TV .... it is so easy to be thrown and forget the words to one of our hits ... but we may ask for large cue cards or the like ... or even autocue.

recently saw Tony Hadley [Spandau Ballet] sing an entire set of songs he had never sung before .. live with an 18 piece swing orchestra and he read every word from a TV screen in front of him!  We laughed about it afterwards - the audience did not suspect a thing.

There are various systems for learning lyrics, just as actors have to remember their lines ... read them three or four times immediately before you switch the light out to sleep ... read them first thing when you wake in the morning.  Because your brain is half way between the waking active brain and the subconscious sleeping brain it will imprint into the subconscious.

With difficult lyrics, you can memorise the first letter of each line like a rhyme ... so it would be B, D, T, S ... for American Pie ...

I use that method and also a method of designing a choreography for the song ... so when I wave a finger that would be  'Bye' ... two hands as if I was steering a car would be 'drove' .... Spreading my hand to encompass a load of people would be 'Them' .. and finally two fingers to the side of my mouth would be 'Singing' ... that would give me the entire chorus of American Pie .... that is my favourite method ... and looks good ... it is part of the NSP system: Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Finally, having learned a new song ... go on stage with the lyrics written on a sheet and placed in a pocket .... it is surprising that that trick works ... it is a mental reminder ... a comfort blanket.

Regards - I hope this helps

The gags: .....      [  And this, my friends, is how government contracting works!  ]

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House in DC: One is from New York, another is from Tennessee and the third, is from Florida.  All three go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The Florida contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The New York contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700."

The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"

The New York contractor whispers back, "$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence."

"Done!" replies the government official.

And that, my friends, is how government contracting works!
