Mastering, mastering, mastering  [the magic of hit making?]

What a few weeks I have had.

Mastering, mastering, mastering ... turning great studio mixed tracks into gob smacking release quality masterpieces.

My band will shortly have our 70th album released ... immediately followed by our 71st!  Unbelievable?  A lot of mastering.   What is mastering?  You may ask!  It is the final tweaking of the track that has been mixed to perfection in the studio.  The mastering suite is a dedicated room with absolutely nothing in it except the bare essentials... the speakers, the computer screen and the mixing hardware ... usually SADIE, the Industry standard.  The room is perfect, acoustically.  Of course, the mastering engineer may have his own favourite add-ons that he feels gives him the edge over other suites.  F-Power being one.

The essential person in the room is the Hit Making mastering engineer ... only use the best, with good credentials and a hit pedigree.  Never be fooled by a normal studio saying they can master ... they certainly can - but the results will be useless ... just the same as the mastering rack mount equipment and software available ... no, no, no!

To hear your track being turned into a 'blow your mind', awesome, product - ready for the marketplace is truly one of the greatest rewards of making sellable music.  It is no wonder that I include an inspiring report with every first issue of 'How To Make a $Million From Your Music' ... it's called "So You're Thinking of Mastering" ... a first glimpse into the very secret world of Hit Quality Mastering.

Extra  Apple Mac Leopard compatibility for Pro Tools [even more power?]

For those not knowledgeable about Apple Macs, the latest version of the computer is the Leopard series ...  massively powerful and used throughout the professional music making community.  They come in dual processor format [two processors working together] or Quad [four] or Eight!  Wow... doesn't bear thinking about.  CPU is the short acronym for Computer Processor Unit.

And I marvel at the power, speed and quality of my dual CPU Mac Tiger?   [the model immediately before Leopard was released]

Digidesign has announced extra Mac Leopard compatibility for Pro Tools 7.4 .  The enhanced compatibility is offered via a pre-release version of Pro Tools software, Pro Tools 7.4.2pr. According to Digidesign, the software is being provided as a "convenience" for Mac users wishing to begin the transition to Leopard before a fully tested and qualified version of Pro Tools becomes available.

Pro Tools 7.4.2pr is available as a download only, and requires Mac OS X 10.5.3. The new software is not compatible with earlier versions of Leopard.

Web  www.digidesign.com

By the way, OS X 10.5.3 is the Mac way of identifying the operating system of the computer.  That is the system within the computer ... nothing to do with ProTools.  The ProTools system is loaded onto the computer and accessed through a stand alone interface unit [a box to plug mics. and guitars etc. into] ... this converts the audio signal into digital information and displays it all on the screen in the ProTools programme.

ProTools software is identified by the numbers and letters after the ProTools word ... i.e. Protools 7.4.2pr being the absolute latest ... I use ProTools 7.3LE.

The major studios use a monster programme called Protools HD [standing for Hard Disc] ... this operates a full 24 inputs and 24 outputs at the same time with an enormous memory space .... so it is more than comparable with the old Otari 24 track 2" reel to reel tape set up.  Costs a fortune though.    [around £16,000 basic]

Manchester to host live sound school   [do you want to break into big time sound engineering?]

A five-day live sound school will take place in Manchester this July, writes David Davies. To be run by City College Manchester and Manchester College of Arts and Technology (MANCAT) at the Openshaw Campus, the training event is aimed primarily at young engineers wishing to break in to touring and live production, but who already have some experience of shadowing professional engineers in local venues or of playing live. Subjects to be addressed include sound theory, microphone placement, FOH mixing, planning and scheduling, and basic lighting.

A long list of high-profile lecturers includes drum tech and monitor engineer Baz Barrett (Basement Jaxx, Doves, Supergrass), sound engineer Franc Le Monignon (The Streets, Dizzee Rascal), guitar tech Bamo (Placebo), record company owner & band manager Dan Thomas, and FOH engineer & City College Music Technology tutor Rose Durbin (Elbow, Doves).

"The summer school is a new idea to try to reach those engineers who do not wish to go to college full-time,"  says Rose Durbin . "The course will provide aspiring professional sound engineers with the knowledge they need to build a system from scratch and allow them to get more hands-on in terms of mixing and setting up FOH and monitoring systems. They can then continue shadowing with more confidence and hopefully find gainful employment. We are also holding backline and tour management workshops to go into aspects of the touring and live production industry."

Places on the course - also said to appeal to music management students, musicians keen to learn more about the technical side of live performance, and those interested in event coordination and music promotion - are limited to 16. The cost is £300 for the week and potential students can contact Rose Durbin directly for more information  rdurbin@ccm.ac.uk

"Uncle Dec,

I have a problem and the problem is either myself or my country...I'd
like you to please help me out.  You know I live in Nigeria and that is a huge problem with no real Pop industry.

My Reply:

There is one solution which other guys in similar countries have realised  ...

Become the biggest star in your country by 'doing it right' ... You
have the knowledge [from me] ... You have the techniques [from me] and
you have the methodology [from me] ... So there is nothing stopping
 you ... Except yourself!

His Reply:

Uncle Dec,

Thank you very much for the word(s) of encouragement.
Your word(s) is exactly what I need to know to keep moving in such a tough music industry like that in my country, Nigeria.

You are the GREATEST Uncle Dec...thank you very much.

Regards,
'KK'

"My Emails Are Written With Good Humour and Should Be Read With A Smile!"

<<<<<<<< in such a tough music industry like that in my country, Nigeria.>>>>>>>>>

KK, there is absolutely no difference in opportunity from one country to another ... Nigeria is exactly as difficult as UK or Sweden or Norway to have a Hit career ... Exactly!

I hear that excuse every day from guys all over the world ... Always remember that Abba came from Sweden ... A country of few people and a long distance from any Pop country .... Bjork came from Norway in that part of the world too ... My band came from Ireland!   We conquered Ireland before we tackled the UK, USA and the rest of the world.

The rules are the same no matter where you are .... A potential hit song presented or performed by a stunning band or artist .... Sell the first 20 to friends and relatives ...then 200 at gigs ... Then 2,000 in shops ....then 20,000 .... The record company then takes over ... Always remember they are a marketing company that market a successful product ...

You have to create the successful product ... No one will do it for you!  80% visual and 20% music?

Ask yourself what you did last week to improve your product?  What books did you read?  What advice did you seek and what extra knowledge did you gain ... and how did you improve YOURSELF?  Do you look better, behave better, talk better than you did last week?

Are you a bigger 'star' this week than you were last week?

Regards

The gags: .....      [ Cuckoo? From a lady subscriber.]

Why females should avoid a girls night out AFTER they are married.....

If this does not make you laugh out loud, you have lost your sense of humour.

The other night I was invited out for a night with the 'girls.' I told my husband that I would be home by midnight, 'I promise!' Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed 3 times..

Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another 9 times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him.

Even when totally smashed... 3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos = MIDNIGHT! The next morning my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him 'MIDNIGHT'... he didn't seem pissed off in the least.

Whew, I got away with that one! Then he said 'We need a new cuckoo clock.'

When I asked him why, he said, 'Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said 'oh sh*t.' Cuckooed 4 more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and f*rted."
