Shure SM57 microphones?

It's interesting how enthusiastic some guys are about using Shure SM57's.

I would think most  of these guys are USA based.

Sadly, in the UK, most run of the mill sound jocks and home producers will scorn SM57's.  Whereas in the States they are the preferred mic. for almost
all purposes [58's for vocals].

I had all my recording knowledge from Shel Talmy and other USA legends in my recording career...so my productions lean towards the USA model.

You may be interested to know the history of this denigration of SM57's in UK recording circles.

In the early days of TV sound recording and presentation, the sound recording engineers were under enormous time pressure as the emphasis was
all on the visual presentation....the sound barely got a look in, time wise.

As the engineers did not have the time to set up dynamic mics [which are dangerous tools if not set up right] they opted almost universally for
condenser mics. ... which were 'softer' and more forgiving.

In other words, use a Neumann, with plenty of pillows, for kick drum and a couple of pencil mic. condenser overheads and you had a pretty safe drum sound...not great, but safe...put together in thirty seconds. [the top pro. drummers always had their kits tuned and set up perfectly for studio work]

Similarly, scatter round a lot of Neumann among the rest of the band, almost indiscriminately .... set all the gains the same [except bass and guitars, obviously] and you had a presentable sound in the shortest time possible.

The American way was to close mic. almost everything [probably 7-10 mics. on drums alone].  Much better sound but took quite a time.

So, all the barely knowledgeable UK guys will laugh at SM57's ... silly boys .... the reason they laugh is through ignorance and lack of knowledge.  They have also picked up from the years of seeing condenser mics. in TV shots that they are absolutely a necessity.

I have always used SM57 / SM58 combination for drums and for all close miked situations.  Gives an overall harder and more commercial sound.  Mind you, I always use triggers and samples for drums today.  Sometimes I will use 57's as triggers.

 A new angle on 'copyright'?

Hi Dec

I always enjoy your "One Minute" mailings, and am hoping that you would consider including the following info in your next one.

I've started a petition to get the copyright laws amended, and a new system of copyright put in place. I think your "makehits" members would be interested to hear about the idea and perhaps sign my petition.

This new system would lead to:-

1. Plagiarism and copyright infringement, both intentional or unintentional would be virtually wiped out.

2. All artists and copyright holders would have full control over what they want to do with their creations, in addition to realising the full earning potential of their work.

3. Piracy would be reduced by up to 99%

4. File sharing would be a legal revenue for artists instead of an illegal practice by their fans.

5. End users of music would find a much more efficient and less time-consuming way of finding and paying for the music they want to use.

The full article explaining this idea can be found on my homepage at www.wobblymusic.net There is a link to the petition at the end of the article, or you can go directly to the petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/Copyrights

I would be very grateful if you could let your members know of this. It is not a scam or money-making idea, but a genuine hope for the continuing prosperity of the music industry.

Regards,

Lynn

  Bananas help music?

This is interesting. After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again.

"Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

The  Sixth Search Engine Optimisation tip:

For those with  Music Web sites.

First tip I gave you was to link to successful sites relevant to what your site is hoping to achieve.  You can do no better than link to us at our three sites:    www.makehits.com/addurlcom.htm  www.makehits.co.uk/addurl.htm  and www.liveperforming.com

Many have done that ... you will notice the change in your search engine positions.

Next :

This may be technical, but hang on in there...it works!

Google reads you web page from top left to bottom right.  In general they do, but because most websites contain a left hand column which contains all their navigational links that can cause problems.

Google, WILL view all of the text in the left hand column before the body of the webpage.  This isn't good for us, because we want Google to actually read our content first.

How do we get around this?  Simple.

Create and empty column on the top left with the navigational links under...then the main text to the right....call me if you want better instructions.

This way Goggle will read the top left column, see that it is empty and automatically go to the right column [which contains all your text]...it will pick up on your keyword density as we have discussed before.  Then  it will go to the next left column [which is your navigational links] .... clever?

NOTE:  Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears on your page, compared to the total number of words on that page.

Chart Comment:

For once the normal chart was ahead of the download chart....yep, the download is exactly as the normal was last week.

For the first time in a long time you average casual observer will glance at the very top of the singles chart and have a genuine "who the hell are they?" moment. For the first time in a long time we have a genuine shock, in your face, in from nowhere record sitting pretty at the very top of the singles chart. True, nobody had really heard of the Pussycat Dolls before they hit the top last month but it had at least picked up some mainstream coverage before its release. No, this week is different.

The Arctic Monkeys are perhaps the first ever example of a group shot to stardom thanks to little more than internet word of mouth. Alex, Jamie, Andy and Matt hail from Sheffield and made their first record earlier this year - a limited edition EP entitled 'Five Minutes With The Arctic Monkeys'.

   Mic. advice needed.

Hi Dec

Which Mic. should I use for live gigs.?

Is there any internet info or lesson on how to sing into a microphone.
I'm finally getting more respect for the singing part of entertaining ( i
play acoustic guitar and sing ).
I've often heard that a microphone should be played like an instrument. >

My Reply:

There is very little to learn about microphones and microphone technique.

The answer to all your questions is 'practice using the simple correct methods'.

The best live performing microphone at your price is the Industry Standard Shure SM58.  Built like a tank, you could not damage it if you tried!  Resale value is always good should you ever feel the necessity of wasting money on a mic. that you perceive to be better!!!!

A good rubberised mic. clip is essential ... practically noiseless in operation, placing and removing the mic.  This skill is improved with practice.  Rubber feet under the stand base are also essential.

Keeping your lips as close to the mic. as possible will both give a warm, full sound [due to proximity effect] and will ensure that the level of volume is constant.

If the PA system is quite large you may get a lot of low end popping and rumble.  This is easily corrected by applying the 100Hz cut button on the mic. channel.  If there is none, then simple roll off the bottom end on the low frequency rotary until the popping and rumble disappears.  You will find that the vocal sound is not affected and possibly will be crisper.  Those bottom frequencies are not easily heard in a voice [vocals are generally felt to be between 200Hz and 2,000Hz]

It is essential to set up the mic. properly on the sound desk.  This is simple.  Press the 'solo' button on the mic. channel and shout you loudest passage of your loudest song.  That will register on the LED display [on a decent desk] .... adjust with the input gain.... aim to just peak in the red.

Now place the fader at 0db AND LEAVE IT THERE.  The overall volume of the presentation is then adjusted with the main output fader.  All the other instruments are then balanced to that vocal level with all the faders at 0db [usually about one inch from the full travel].  The extra inch is called 'head-room' and only used to make fast momentary changes in level.  The power amps should be at full.

As regards FX units .... do the same exercise ... shout the loudest passage and adjust the input of the unit to peak just in the red ... then adjust the output to give the level of FX you like.  This will ensure that the unit is working at it's theoretically quietest and most efficient.  [FX units in live rigs are a notorious source of noise.]

<<<<<<<<a microphone should be played like an instrument>>>>>>>>  said an adviser.

I am assuming this advice refers to the dreadful habit of pulling the microphone away from your mouth for the the high and loud notes?  A detestable habit...hated by sound engineers and totally unnecessary....frowned upon by visiting producers/A&R men as this brings you over as a 'cabaret singer'

Two things to note about this:

1) A good sound rig or studio rig will always have compressor/limiters in place.  These will ensure that the mic. sound is presented at a constant, theoretically correct, level for the desk or recorder.  So there is no need to move your lips whatever.  When you sing quieter or louder it is the sound timbre that will change and not the volume [in theory]

2) Even if there are no compressor/limiters then half an inch variation from the mic. is all that is needed for quiet and loud bits.  That dreadful cabaret habit of pulling the mic. away simply makes the sound disappear altogether unless you are playing to a room  holding six people...that way they hear the natural voice sound rather than the P.A.

It is wise to learn to play and sing with a straight mic. stand and not a boom stand.

The visual looks better and also you have no problem in moving the mic. whilst holding the guitar.  Otherwise your attempts will look comical ... try it!  It is pig easy to convert a boom stand to a straight stand ... learn how .. it's worth it as no sound boy will ever know how.  And won't help you [from much experience!]

Beware of singing too far away from the mic. whilst playing guitar as the guitar [acoustic?] will leak into the vocal mic.  That is another reason for sticking your lips to the mic.

[Of course, in TV situations you will be best advised to work say 3 inches from  the mic. as 'lips on mic.' will give bad visuals for the cameras.  But still maintain that precise distance.]

Using the methods above you will:

1) get the most from the sound system
2) never have distortion on the mic.
3) never get too much guitar rather than vocal
4) protect your voice from over working and preserve a quality 'recording' voice.

As regards mic. technique.....always be conscious of singing with a recording voice....never be tempted into the 'how high can you sing and how loud can you sing' argument.  It is your recording voice that can make the $Millions not the loud high 'live' voice.

The gags:  [  One for my Yiddish friends ]

"Toward the end of Shabbat  Services, the Rabbi asked, "How many of
 you have forgiven your enemies?"

 80%  held up their hands.

The Rabbi then  repeated his question. All responded this time,
 except one small elderly lady.

"Mrs. Kohn? Are you not willing to forgive your enemies? "

"I don't have  any." She replied, smiling sweetly.

"Mrs. Kohn, that is very unusual. How old are you?"

 "Ninety-eight."  she  replied.

"Oh, Mrs. Kohn," said the Rabbi, "would you please come down in
front and tell us all how a person can live ninety-eight years and
not have an enemy in the world?"

The little sweetheart of a lady  tottered down the aisle, faced the
congregation, and said:  "I outlived the  bitches."
