Imogen Heap shows the way forward

I have long been advising all who will listen that you must learn every facet of our wonderful music business.

It is simply not good enough to pick the bits you like, say performing heavy metal on stage or sitting in front of a computer and making music or perhaps sitting with a note pad writing poetry/lyrics.  No, the guys who get the real success understand and use all the equipment, all the methods ... and simply get on and do it!

I have seen many guitar players use high tech guitar echoes, samplers, extreme effects live on stage [Brian May for one, and now Gordon Giltrap who creates a complete multi tracked toon live in front of his audience, using a multi tracking Boss unit]

Now artists are taking this miles further ... Imogen Heap has a stunning voice....originally from the UK ... my son used her when he was running the Surrey Institute of Art and Design and raved about her.  She is now huge in the States and has recently packed the Finsbury Park Empire ... even though the main stream Pop fans have hardly heard of her...sop what does she do?

She uses samplers, echoes, FX tricks live in her gig ... operating the high tech gear herself in real time and creating stunning sounds...so, if you are a singer, do you think Dec's advice all this while has been right?  Learn every part of your business ... the best advice I can give you!

Now away, I might be enjoying a large chilled glass of Sangria!!

"They say the grass is greener on the other side - it isn't - it just gets p*ssed on more" - Giovanni De Staffano

Good news for those collecting royalties:

It has just been announced that PPL [Phonographic Performance Limited] will be merging with AURA, PAMRA,EQUITY, MUSIC PRODUCERS GUILD, and The Musician's Union.

This will create a very powerful representation for Performers and will cut down on duplication of effort and will ensure that royalties are collected in a more rigorous way from overseas performances of material.

Attention to detail?

There should also be attention to detail for all projects most particularly in music . The reason the Titanic sank was attention to a small detail. They forgot to bring binoculars for the crew. So nobody saw the iceberg!

Hiya - I recently purchased “How To Start Your Own Music  Publishing Business for less than $100,” from your administration.

This happens to be a great educational tool for the growth of my business.

The guide clearly outlines what a publishing company should entail, and the letter formats are terrific.

And another......

Hi Dec

Last night I was invited to a release party by an artist. The label was Sony BMG, no less. I was waiting for a friend close to the door (where the manager/ press agents/ people from the label were) and when the show was over a guy in a suit came and shook my hand congratulating me for the sound of the band. He mistook me for the producer of the album. I said I was a producer but I was not the one that produced that particular band and he said "hey you look like a producer". Then the real producer came and I can tell that we were wearing similar clothes... I thought it was cool right?

BTW tomorrow I'm invited to an unplugged show that'll be air played on TV by Leo García maybe the most important electro pop artist in the country... Only 100 guests will be allowed.

Greetings from Buenos Aires,  Emiliano Canal

A  question  on building a home studio...  KK lives in Nigeria and I have been helping him for many years now.

Uncle Dec,

I have this problem in building my studio...

After reading the article you have on your website http://www.makehits.co.uk/art019.htm there were some things I don't understand and those things I didn't understand were some terms used...I'll explain below...

Here are the materials I will be needing just as you wrote:

a. Sound Board (if I might ask...what's a sound board?   Are they the types used for making acoustic guitars)

b. Polythene Sheet

c. Rock wool

d. 5200 small (what are 5200 small dabs)

e. Toothpaste

f. Super Balls for suspended floors (believe me, I don't know what super balls are...but I intend to use 2"x2" timber to suspend the floor...are these good
enough)

g. strips and washers (can I use any suitable to me)

h. Bass Traps (this I think I can construct on my own using cotton wool and timber then placing them at the extreme corners of studio)..

I hope to read from you soonest...

Regards,
'kk'  [Nigeria]

 My Reply:

Hello KK

<<<Sound Board>>>> :  in this context it is different to a sound board on a guitar.  We mean the sort of 2 metre X 1 metre approx. building board made of soft fibrous material for fixing to a wall.  Usually tan coloured.  They are nailed or screwed to strips of 2"X2" which are glued and fixed upright on the existing wall.

<<<<Polythene Sheet>>>> :  usually used in building to keep rain out - it is transparent and very thin ...  comes in quite large rolls.  Can be used to cover the earth prior to pouring concrete to make a floor.... This produces a damp proof membrane, so no damp can come from the earth below..  It can also be used as a damp-proof membrane on a wall to prevent moisture build up at the dew point [where the cold air meets the hot air]

<<<<Rock wool>>>>: a heat/cold insulation material, grey in colour and more dense than fibre glass .... Comes in rolls about 1 metre wide ... Easy to used and more standard in the USA as a heat/cold insulation in roofs and walls.  Has good sound insulation properties though not as good as felt carpet underlay. [the heavier the material the better the sound insulation].

<<<<5200 small (what are 5200 small dabs)>>>:  Simply small balls of adhesive material squeezed from the tube.

<<<Toothpaste >>>: a cleaning paste which comes in a tube and is squeezed onto a toothbrush to clean your teeth.

<<<<Super Balls for suspended floors (believe me, I don't know what super balls are...but I intend to use 2"x2" timber to suspend the floor...are these good
enough)>>>> : hollow rubber balls used for the game of squash or racquet ball ... About two inches in diameter, easy to cut and very efficient in not transmitting sound when the floor is laid on many of them.

2"X2" would not be firm enough to support a floor .. The standard is 4"x2" ..... If there is an existing floor then you can simply glue the super balls [cut in half] in place and not use the timbers.... Although the timbers with super balls on top would be a superb job.  The less contact the new floor has with the existing floor the better the insulation.

<<<<strips and washers (can I use any suitable to me) >>>>: not familiar with these words out of context.  A strip is a narrow long length of any material ... A washer is a circular piece of metal with a hole in... Usually used when screwing a screw into a soft material .... To protect the material as a small screw head would screw in too deep.

<<<Bass Traps (this I think I can construct on my own using cotton wool and timber then placing them at the extreme corners of studio)..>>>>  : A bass trap means a corner which will collect and amplify any bass sound...thus giving a wrong impression of the mix.

It is not very noticeably except in large rooms and large live venues.  By simply tacking long pillows vertically in the corners this problem disappears.  You can also simply place a sheet of timber or fibre board across the corner to eliminate the corner.   The commercial remedies from Studiospares are very expensive.

It is important to eliminate as many parallel surfaces as possible.  Even a sloped ceiling is a great help.  Windows should have heavy curtains ... And simple book shelves with lots of books are a superb solution for a reverberating room.
