MENU:
Our method proved right yet again?

Today came the announcement that Sugababes have a new 'Babe'.  Yep the news wires have been electric all day.

I was practically the first to know...why?

On 16 Feb 03, in 'One Minute With Dec' http://www.makehits.com/160203oneminarchive.htm I wrote about a stunning girl, Emma ... read on:

"You may not know that my son owns 'The Funky End', a highly successful, 'trendy', watering hole in Aldershot, Surrey. If you visit the town you will find his place immediately by the railway station. Wonderful position for a venue like that.

You will find behind the bar the most stunning, alive, jumping with excitement, girl called Emma.

Why is she excited? She has just been chosen to head up a new girl band. The whole deal is being put together by 'Top of the Pops' magazine. It will be a four handed act with two British girls and two Americans. The working title is 'UK State'. My son, Oliver, gave her lots of time off to attend the auditions - and last week, she was announced the winner! Now she goes to the States to help choose the two American girls, then she comes back to choose the last girl, who will be British, and then starts in July at the hard work...earning £8,000 a month, initially...she bubbles with excitement...she beams and smiles non stop ...she has always been like that. She is just a bundle of fun. She is everything I advise the members of my Serious Writers Guild to be. Her skin, her hair, teeth, shape...all brilliant - and her clothes are just the greatest....absolute perfection. She looks a star even before she starts to sing...and the voice....wow!

To illustrate her attitude and commitment, she assures Oliver that between stints, in the coming months, she will still work at his bar earning silly money...it just shows what a girl she is....watch out for Emma Barracerra [I think she will change her surname...what do you think?]"

I can well remember the encouragement and advice I gave her.  I have often asked my son how she is doing:  "oh, she is back and forwards to The States but very disheartened...nothing seems to be working...the promised record deal came to nothing."  Two weeks ago Oliver met her whilst out walking...same story.  and then today?  The difference a couple of weeks makes.

And she proved that hard work, looking every bit a super star and acting and behaving like a star PLUS the talent works every time.

So the methods in 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' are more than right?

Check-list for gigging?

When your band has been around as long as my band has you find that you are contracted to work in so many different venues.  One night a huge auditorium, next night a sophisticated birthday party in a small but expensive Hotel function room, the next a marquee situation for someone with too much money to spend ....and sometimes one of those huge 2,500 seater Bingo places...state of the art.

On this year's Christmas tour we have found all the usual hazards to performance ... maybe a quick check might help you for the future?

1) Always use reputable suppliers and reputable Industry Standard equipment.  One radio mic. supplied by Ian Warrener at www.pa-direct.co.uk went pear shaped ... we had a brand new one in the post the very next day. [by the way always have a trail mic. standing by and make sure it is muted and pre-fade - not in the monitors].  Our concert mixing desk lost a channel.  Brixton Music Exchange [ http://www.bem-music.com/ ] had it repaired and back within two days.  I have known Frank, the owner for a very long time!

2) Always ensure that you keep the power supply for all the sound equipment totally separate to the electrics for the lighting.  You can always put the house lights on if that power fails... but if the sound fails you are stuffed.

3) Ensure that ALL radio mics. and receivers are SWITCHED off.  And while you are at it make sure ALL sound systems are SWITCHED OFF ... not just faded down.  I could tell you horror stories about that situation.

4) As regards those vast new Bingo venues, make sure you double the size of your concert rig.  We currently use 27,000 watts...and that is just about enough.  Check for what they call 'ambient mics'.  they use them as back up to their radio system when a punter shouts 'house'.  The speakers for that system are usually on the stage ... so..... if you start your presentation with those mics. on then your 27,000 watts goes straight into the ambient mics...back into the stage speakers and voile...horrendous feed-back which you will never begin to guess where it is coming from.  With all my experience we got caught out very badly last week.  The stuff that nightmares are made of.

It won't happen again!

Here is a question about guitar recording ...I have tried to give good detail.

Hi Dec,

I really need to access your knowledge about what makes a great demo as quickly as possible, because I have to present a couple of songs to V**** L****** of Sony Music, and I can't afford to miss my chance with this guy.

Thanks for tout advice and your help.

Have a great Holiday Season.

My Reply:

As regards making a demo quickly, I take three weeks to make a great money making recording.  There is no 'short Email' method to achieve a potential hit recording.  I always advise that it takes 10 years to figure out the methods making your own mistakes and three years with a mentor like me using the methods in 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' [ www.makehits.com ]

It is also advisable to use the Demo consultation Service before approaching the 'big shots' ... www.makehits.co.uk/demo.htm

I can give you a list of 'mistakes' that novices make ... thus it is relatively easy to change this around to a 'method' for Hit writing.

1) Lack of repetition in lyrics ... spend 8 hours honing one line to repeat 8 times rather than writing 8 differing lines. [Check any major Hit record]

2a) Writing poetry and expecting to put it to music - "words without music are poetry" [Sir Paul McCartney]

2b) Trying to 'educate' the world ... dolphins, whales, pollution, famine.

2c) Lack of 'girl to boy, boy to girl' love me up lick me down lyrics.

3d) Lack of monosyllabic lyrics.

3e) Lack of collaboration.  A 'today' toon will have 3/4/5 collaborators.

3) No knowledge of what is currently at Number One in the chart....a track must sit comfortably between Number One and Number Three in the chart this week.

3a) Attempting to write for the mythical 'adult record buying audience' (which does not exist!)

4) Intro too long.  The hit is in the first ten seconds, all the main points MUST be made in the first 40 secs.

5) Lack of vocal arrangement.  There MUST be up to 5 differing vocal ideas moving together [Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Christina]

6) PC recorded. The professional side of the industry does not use PC...end of story.  There are only three programmes used: Protools, Logic, Sonar - used on a Mac base..

7) 'Addicted to live'.  Most novices feel that 'live' musicians can deliver more 'bounce' that computer programming...totally and utterly wrong!  We only use live musicians when they can 'add to the occasion'

8) Lack of 'real' instruments in the final production.  Guitar particularly and maybe bass - but only, as I have said, when they 'add to the occasion'.

9) Lack of a 'vocal performance better than in the chart today'.  That can only be achieved by using the technique given in 'How to Make A $Million From Your Music' and using that method for three months minimum. www.makehits.com

9a) Lack of 'gigged' voice.  A vocal performance is dependant on a voice being gig toughened.

9b) Lack of producer.  It is impossible to produce a Hit vocal in a self produced situation....IMPOSSIBLE!

The gags:

A Jewish congregation in New York honours its Rabbi for
25 years of service by sending him to Hawaii for a
week, all expenses paid.

When he walks into his hotel room, there's a beautiful
girl, nude, lying on the bed.    She says, "Hi, Rabbi,
I'm a little something extra that the president of the
board arranged for you.    The Rabbi is incensed.

He picks up the phone, calls the President of the Shul
Board and says, "Greenberg, what were you thinking?
Where's your respect?    I am the moral leader of our
community!    I am very angry with you and you have
not heard the end of this".

The girl gets up and starts to get dressed.  The Rabbi
turns to her and says, "Where are you going?  I'm not
angry with you " .
