What a Success Story?

I have been talking with one of our members for quite a while now and admired his 'get up and go' attitude.  I also admired the fact that he did not question one single thing I advised, he just did it.  He bought 'How To Make A $Million From your Music' a couple of years ago.

I always advised:  "You sell the first 2,000 - 20,000 ... the business of the major record company is to market the product and turn the 2,000 into 200,000, 2 Mill, 20 Million!

But first YOU have to sell the 2,000-20,000" ... which is what Ian is doing.
"There ya go Dec, gorgeous ain't they?  12-18 yr olds LOVE them...they have something different to the same old "indie" thing.

I'm still learning though...next time we release something I reckon I'll do the distribution myself as well as everything else (as that is the only reason this single will not chart).

Here's the story Dec...in a nutshell.
Bought and studied "How to Make a Mill from your Music ..."
Gave up the day job
Started a publishing company [with your 'How to Start a Publishing Company For Less Than £100']
Started working with Patchwork Grace
Labels not interested
Started a label
Recorded single "Zebra" with Moot group (best rock producers we could afford).
Got distribution deal to get single to our core fan base areas.
WE talk to HMV managers and take some to nearest outlets in Nottingham and Derby (which rapidly sell out) and then due to the numbers of 14-18 yr old fans calling the stores the distro company start to get the product out.
It sells so well in Nottingham HMV that they make it "single of the week"...

Wanna know how you can get the single FOR ZILCH?  'course you do...  OK...I'll tell ya!
Get the promo label from a bottle of Coke or Diet Coke and go here;  http://www.coca-cola.co.uk/music/

You can then download "Zebra" from I-Tunes absolutely for ZIP!... yup honest!
So if you could pop that into the next "one minute" I'll love ya even more than I already do :)

Thanks for starting me off on this journey Dec, I'm off now to stack some shelves somewhere coz until the sales figures come in I'm skint!...but I'm sure as hell living!

A program called Workrave

"I have now developed RSI from being on the computer so much. There's a program called Workrave that you and others may find useful. It's freeware.

Forces you to take regular breaks from typing.

Well, that's it. Thanks for listening,

Robert."

So you have a hit song for this girl?

Female singer with label interest is looking for a hit song. Genre is country/folk in the style of Alison Krauss. The producer of Krauss' new project will also produce this singer's record. Contact mailto:luannehunt@yahoo.com

I thought I would send out a reminder.

Steve is recovering from an accident which occurred a couple of weeks ago....don't worry, he's ok; he was out cycling when unfortunately he fell from his bike, injuring his shoulder. There's more.

This happened in the wind an rain whilst he was cycling downhill at a fairly brisk pace. I would add that it was at about midnight and he'd spent the previous twelve hours cycling around Brighton with a mate.

When I say cycling around Brighton what I mean is cycling was involved but was interrupted by visits to various public houses.  Now you get the full picture. I'll say no more on the subject.

Hope to see you there.

Highlight:

Do you want to delete a continuous list of messages in your email inbox? Highlight the first message, hold down the shift key, and highlight the last message. Now they should all be highlighted. Just press delete, and the whole list disappears!

The same trick can be used most anywhere. You can use it to highlight an article on a web page, or part of one. It also works on your word processor.

Hi Dec,

Lots of worry re my lyrics.

My Reply:

Hi

R*****

<<<<<<<I have had a listen to Connie Bailey-Rae's song that you mention in your newsletter. It's very nice indeed. I also had a look at her myspace site.

She says she's done her 10 years. Her vocal arrangements are supportive of her melody without threatening it. All very well done.>>>>>>>

Yep the magic 10 years .... Even Britney says it took 10 years! ..... Me? Started at 12 years ... First hit 21/22 .... Amazing.

<<<<<<<6 years ago, when I first contacted you in regard to a CD I had made, you predicted I wouldn't sell any. You were right.>>>>>>>>>

It's easy to predict when I see that the basic premise of 'Give the public what they want, not 'what you feel they need' is broken.

<<<<<<<<They have to have a sentiment that brings a warm feeling. It's all too easy to write complaints>>>>>>>>

And that is the first mistake .... To worry about 'sentiment' ... Once I hear the word mentioned in a 'Demo Consultation' I know exactly what I am going to hear, even before putting the CD on. Forget sentiment....concentrate on making them bop to luscious, caressing, boy to girl, girl to boy lyrics .... Coupled with a dynamite performance, that is a real recipe for success.... Forget about sentiment! It won't pay the bills.

Check out the Subscriber's section in last week's 'One Minute'

<<<<<<<It seems pointless to begin performing without these things.>>>>>>>>

You are simply making excuses! Procrastinating.

<<<<<<< I performed a song I wrote >>>>>>

You need to do 70% covers [in your own identifiable style] and 30% your own material [unannounced]

<<<<<<<<1. How do you learn to write vocal arrangements? Is studying theory, arranging and composition the way to go? Or is it better to get some good ear training and just sing what feels good and not consciously think about the details? Trial and error?>>>>>>>>>

It is important to study the great vocal arrangements and as I say in 'How to Make A $Million' make an exact copy of a great track ... To show you how difficult it is ... And how achievable it is ... You will learn plenty with that exercise.

Never busk harmonies.... Unless it is a very simple two part. Always write every note and then track each harmony 4 times ... Making sure you track to get a sound... Not simply tracking the same sounding voice 4 times... That will simply make it louder.

<<<<<<<<2. How do you master yourself so you produce a strong flow of the right sort of lyrics, techniques aside? Is there a specific attitude to life you must have? When I first wrote songs I thought one emotion was as good as another, so I wrote whatever I felt. Then I realised the need for good sentiments...and my writing slowed down considerably. Should I look at Hallmark cards for ideas?>>>>>>>>

You simply sit down and write to make money .... As Elton John said when asked: "where do you get your inspiration from?" he replied: "a blank sheet of paper at 10am in the morning". Absolutely correct.

Tell yourself you have just got news that your toon is at Number 3 and rising in the Billboard chart and they need a follow up for 3 pm tomorrow's session ..... Now write!

Feels different ... Doesn't it?

Regards

The gags: ..... If you don't laugh at this one, there's no hope for you.

Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call.

The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-yr old girl to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby.
Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked.  Heidi pushed and pushed and after a little while, Connor was born.  The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom.  Connor began to cry.

The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-yr old what she thought about what she had just witnessed.

Kathleen quickly responded, "He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place......smack his ass again!"
