The Most Popular 30 per cent off product? [ ends on 31st Jan ]

You have proved to me that guys in the music world are so 'canny' [a Scottish word].  They realise that one of the great secrets to success in the music world is to learn how to write and make a Hit Potential toon ... have it tested [in an Industry Standard Way] and then have it sent to the most important man in your future life  [the A&R man of your future record company]

The most popular combination for achieving this is "57 Secrets of a Hit Record" www.makehits.com/57Secrets.htm  ... which shows you precisely what a hit record has to contain .... AND .... "The Demo Consultation" ... the ultimate critique and commercial evaluation on how commercial and sellable your record is.   www.makehits.co.uk/demo.htm

The two are available until 31st of Jan. at www.makehits.co.uk/30sale.htm and don't forget to mention 30 per cent off in the 'message for Dec' box!   You can have any two of our products at 30 percent off.

Online auction sites now a primary channel for faked microphones [watch out! You have been warned]

There are growing signs that the British market has become the subject of a resurgence in the availability of faked audio product. Microphones and headphones are the most popular targets for the counterfeiters, writes David Davies.

At present, the trend appears to be manifesting itself in two primary ways: through approaches from counterfeit traders to traditional music retailers, and online sales via websites such as eBay.

Adrian Rooke, Managing Director of Audio-Technica UK, is among those becoming increasingly concerned. "We are beginning to see a lot of obviously counterfeit product traded on eBay," he says. "With £100 equivalent models on sale for around £10, it is clear that these are not intended to pass for the genuine article."

Illegitimate trade on auction sites has also been worrying Shure Distribution UK lately, although Managing Director Dennis Harburn says the company's recent high-profile push on the issue is beginning to pay off. Hundreds of counterfeit items had been appearing on eBay on a monthly basis, "but now it's down to dozens. We've been using an eBay programme and some software that we've invested in for a three-month period, and where we suspect that there are fake microphones for sale we've been closing the auctions down one by one."

Meanwhile, Sennheiser UK's Director of Marketing, John Steven, has concerns about a recent upsurge in the quantity of counterfeit headphones being offered for sale. "We have had calls from retailers asking, Can you explain why [CX300] headphones are appearing on eBay for £9.99? Yes, it's simple - they're not ours."

A New Angle on Guitar Playing  [ Stand by to be stunned ]

I have been working for sometime on a sensational new product for guitar players.  The book and CD has been put together by a member of The Serious Writers Guild.

Andy has been down at my studio and I have been amazed at his speed and technique ... absolutely breathtaking.  Now, I play a mean guitar myself but I have never been a 'fast' player .... Andy can play with blurring speed.  This book and CD lays bare all the tricks and practice techniques that are necessary.

The book is in it's final stages of production and I can't wait to make it available ... as I have said "Stand by to be stunned" ... this takes it all to a different level.  You will be the first to know about it.

Tip of the Week [ Cache Files  ...  Your c redit card numbers are safe! ]

Cache files are used to store information on a temporary basis for quick access. The physical location of this can be either on a hard drive or in RAM memory.

The idea behind it is to store information the computer is probably going to need in a location that's quick and easy to access. Since it can get to needed information quicker, the computer runs faster.

When you are on a secure server however, (the address starts with "https:") the page is NOT saved to your Temporary Internet Files. You can rest easy that your card info is not sitting in the cache, just waiting for someone to find it.

Subscriber's Section [ a question re computer tower noise - from a long time member in Nigeria ]

Hi Uncle Dec,

It's a great idea to have computer system unit of the reach of recording. I've tried taking out my system units out of the recording room and did a test with a conde
nser microphone to check for noises. There was a huge difference with having them in the room.

Now the problem I am facing is my keyboard cables and mouse cables. Putting the system units outside the room makes it difficult for them to be connected to it because of the distance. Do you have an idea where I can very long PS2 adapters/cables for them. I have searched the market, I did see some but there were really short for the purpose I wanted them to serve.

Will be glad to read from you soonest.

Regards,
'kk'

PS:   I am still facing problems with drum triggers but that is another discussion for later.

I had the same problem when I installed my present Apple Mackintosh with Protools ..... The noise from the fan was acceptable .. But not acceptable by me! [grin!]

I got in touch with a computer repair and service man who looks after my equipment when we have a breakdown which we cannot fix ourselves .... He informed me that he could easily make up customised extension cables for the mouse, screen and keyboard.  The cost would be small for the convenience achieved.

He warned me that there is a limit to the length - as the mouse, screen and keyboard information is powered by the USB links .... This problem can be solved by using a mains powered multi USB hub ... BUT .... For some unknown reason certain pieces of equipment need to be connected directly to the tower ... Don't ask me why.... And I cannot find anyone who can really answer the question...why?

I devised a novel answer to the whole problem myself!

My studio is in a loft area of the house.  It is a large house which has a number of 'walk-in' loft spaces [as they had when this old house was built].  So I positioned the mixing desk against a wall which backed onto a roof void [the triangular area between the roof tiles and the floor joists].  I then drilled a hole through and fed the cables into the void.  I then placed the tower in the roof void and for extra sound insulation surrounded it with duvets [warm blankets we use in the winter for bedding].  I made sure the fans were not interfered with.

The fitting was tight and it took a lot of awkward fiddling to get everything positioned right but the result is fabulous .... Almost total silence in my studio space ... Even with a high quality condenser mic. at full level.

So, there are two solutions .... I know mine works [drilling a hole through to the next room] .... It may be that a friendly computer engineer would make up one long extension lead for you to try?  Let me know how you get on.

Regards

Dec

Wedding dress

Son asked his mother the following question: "Mum, why are wedding dresses white?"

The mother looks at her son and replies, "Son, this shows your friends and relatives that your bride is pure."

The son thanks his Mum and goes off to double-check this with his father.

"Dad why are wedding dresses white?"

The father looks at his son in surprise and says,"Son, all household appliances come in white."
