Whew!  The heat?

I escaped the heat overseas to come back to the UK for the Summer ... now the UK has it's hottest Summer since 1911.

Not pleasant in the studio ... by the way, the best and quietest air conditioning for a studio is the Mitsubishi set up.  It is totally quiet in the studio because the trunking goes to a point far away outside where the main cooling mechanism is.  I feel we shall all have to start thinking about that system here in the UK.

I am lucky that I have huge roof windows... and my studio is right at the top of the building.... so ... it is quite cool and it is definitely quiet ... except when the seagulls decide to join in with the back singers.  Chill out producers would die for that chorus of seagulls?

Our Skype system is a wow with the members of The Serious Writers Guild [ www.makehits.co.uk/swg.htm ]

We now have Skype, the free Internet phone system, so members are able to talk to me in real time from anywhere in the world for free .... the cool, thing is that Video phoning is also free ... now that is quite a sight ... in this heat I am working in just shorts, so the video picture looks decidedly rude ... I'm glad most of the members are the same [not the ladies!]

If you have not got Skype you are simply mad.... it's free and it is now over the initial glitches ... it is as perfect as a land line [plus the video].

I am mixing a track for a client in Italy, so it is marvelous that he can talk through the project in real time to my studio.

Hilarious Reaction to my advice re lip synching last week:

Dec,

> the fact that EVERY filmed music sequence is totally mimed ... without
> exception ...

Not quite true.

"At Long Last Love" had its songs sung live.

Tip of the Day

When sending an e-mail to multiple recipients, you can hide their e-mail addresses from each other. This is a sensible anti-spam precaution because it avoids making a long list of e-mail addresses available to all the recipients (which is what happens if you put everyone's address in the To: or CC: fields).

Now I’m not suggesting that your friends are going to spam you.  But if you send them something they find interesting, and they forward it to their list, who may have someone who forwards it to their list – you see where I’m going with this.

It also is a major pain if you are forwarding an email you received that shows all the addresses to your list and it includes all the email addresses of the original mailing plus yours. Think about it – all you need is two or three inconsiderate folks doing this and you might have to wade through several hundred email addresses to read a three line joke. I routinely simply delete any messages like this.

Never – Ever – and that is a very long time, should you send email to a list and show the addresses of everyone who it is being sent to.  Use BCC – “Blind Carbon Copy” which is available on most email packages both offline as well as online.

Don’t know how to do it you say – take a quick tour of the “Help” information in your email program, or ask a friend – don’t have any friends you say <Grin> - as a last resort, drop me an email and let me know which email package you are using.  If I know the answer, I will share it with you.

"It is said that life begins at 40.  Well, on that basis, on July 28th  I will be 10 years old!!!!!

Nothing spectacular has been planned to commemorate this milestone (yet).... although a little event is happening the day after.

Paul and Steve aka   The Heartsmiths    will be performing a selection of popular songs from the the last 50 odd years. So no change there then. One of them could be your all-time favourite song of all time........doubtful but you never know.

For those yet to witness our performances we are an acoustic duo playing good songs in our own particular style (if you can call it style).

DATE: Saturday 29th July  TIME: Well kind of, about, approximately, sort of......8.45 kick off. Last orders at the bar at 12.00.

LOCATION: The White Horse, Ditchling, West Sussex.......easy to find.  ADMISSION:     FREE............thought I'd better get that in.

It would be great to see you and we will do our best to keep you entertained.  However, in view of the age thing I might forget a few words, tunes, complete songs even.  Additionally, although the set will include a short interval, I still may find it necessary to take one or two additional "comfort" breaks.

See you there - cheers  - Paul Hartley  mailto:paul@hartsongs.co.uk "

    A  question on MCPS licensing

Hi Dec

It's me again, well I have got caught in a little trouble and I really need your your help and advice.

I've got my website ready to launch and I have had a major demand for people wanting to buy my CD, so my next move is to make copies of my CD but everywhere I'm going they want a licence from me to say the songs are mine and I looked up MCPS and on there website they are asking for £613 for me to get this licence.

1. Does it really cost this much a licence ?

2. What Licence do I need to get my CD replicated?

I look forward to hearing from you and I do hope all is well and keeping yourself relax.

Smile ... K*****

 My Reply:

Hello K*****

The formula for obtaining an MCPS license to manufacture CD's can be slightly complicated. The form they will send you to fill in will require the timing for each track and all the writer's details.

Then you must tell them the amount of CD's you will have duplicated, the amount for promotion and freebie copies.  They will then calculate the cost of the license.  I must say £613 sounds extremely high.

It is illegal for any duplication plant to duplicate CD's without an MCPS license.

Realistically, K*****, I would wait to see what the reaction is to the sale of your CD on your site.  The initial copying can be done in-house.  The 'real player' programme will copy the CD's.  An Epson Photo R200 printer will print directly onto the CD [you need matt surfaced blank CD's for this].  You will need professionally prepared artwork ... doesn't cost a fortune...and don't even dream of doing it yourself or getting a 'mate' to do it ... it has to be professionally done.  It should have the CD logo on and a barcode ... each of these easily available through research on the Net.  It should also have full details of writers and publishers.

The inlay cards and tray cards are easily printed with a high quality printer such as the Epson above.  The blank CD's and cards are easily available.   http://www.rivierapublishing.co.uk/ stock all this.  Talk to Chrissy .. tell her you know me.

Paying an out of work musician £10 an hour to sit and copy CD's does him a favour and you a favour ... he can watch TV while he does this ... he will also pack the jewel cases and insert the inlay cards... you can have your own production line.  But be honest with PRS ... pay them.   The money will come back to you anyway!

It is only when the demand outstretches your in-house capacity that you need to look at MCPS licenses.... that is the realistic view. Otherwise you could end up with a garage full of CD's you can't sell.  It gets back to the principal: "always make sure the music is sold before you make it"

Regards

The gags: .... After many long months of cold and winter, we are finally into BBQ season therefore, it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this outdoor cooking ritual, as it's the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.

When a man volunteers to do the BBQ, the following chain of events is put into motion:

  Routine:

  1. The woman buys the food.
  2. The woman makes a salad, prepares vegetables, and makes dessert.
  3. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.

Here comes the important part:

  4. THE.....MAN.....PLACES.....THE.....MEAT.....ON.....THE.....GRILL.

  More routine:

  5. The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
  6. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

  Important again:

  7.  THE.....MAN.....TAKES.....THE.....MEAT.....OFF.....THE.....GRILL.....AND ...HANDS....IT.....TO.....THE....WOMAN.

  More routine:

  8. The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table.
  9. After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all:
 10. Everyone PRAISES THE MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
 11. The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off" and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women!

   Happy BBQ Season everyone
