I couldn't bring myself to write

I will not dwell on last week's events in the UK.  We were all glued to the TV and newspapers and gripped in the horror of it all.

Having been brought up in Ireland and seeing the futility of the killing and maiming through the years, it becomes obvious that no amount of terror and violence will change any country's situation....only 'talk' will.

So I felt it in 'bad taste' to send out a jolly, fun filled 'One Minute' .... in fact even this week I feel still subdued.  I can only think of those who were involved in London and the families and friends who will never be the same again .... may those who died so needlessly rest in peace.

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.
You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."
Billy - age 4

The Congress Show

It was fabulous.....   it excelled our wildest dreams.  Thank you to all those 'One Minute' folk who attended and all others in the music business who made the journey.

I could not believe the number who simply Emailed to say: "can't come on Monday Dec but let me have the address to send a donation" ... in credible.

If you feel you want to be part of the effort to raise £500,000 for a respite home for those affected by Autism, and other Special Needs simply send a donation...any figure -

It is certainly not expected but much appreciated.  Every single penny goes to help our Special Needs children.

'Lark in the Park Charitable Trust',  Stanton Prior, Darley Road, Meads, Eastbourne BN20 7UH in the UK.....Obviously registered with the Charities Commission.

You could use the two Email system to send a credit card donation...safe as houses!  Send half the card number details in one Email and the other half in the second one with expiry date [plus valid from if required] and the amount [any currency].

So what was the show like?

You will often hear the phrase:  "He stole the show"...well I am here to tell you that every succeeding act 'stole the show'.

The two comments that struck were:

Gavin tott:  "It was like being involved in a Master Class in show Business"

John Brown [Fender UK]:  "Dec, your face when you were playing 'Apache' with Bruce Welch, you had a look like the cat who got the cream!"

Yes, I must say I now have two guitarist's dreams under my belt....Playing with Brian May and taking Hank Marvin's part by playing 'Apache' with the great Shadows man himself....Bruce Welch.

The Fender acoustic guitar which Fender UK donated was auctioned on the night and fetched £1,050 .... altogether amazing and won by a Member of The Serious Writers Guild - Steve Smith.

I always say you can judge how much Pro's enjoy themselves by the time they part company...would you believe 5.30am?  Still talking, joshing and laughing.  Sadly in today's Show Business where most entertainments are concerts by single bands or artists we never get to meet each other socially.  Perhaps at Benefit dinners or balls but rarely in a show business performing sense.  We rarely get to 'work with each other'.

Anything to learn?

Yep, that 'power' is everything in concert amplification.  In all we used around 70KW.  the sound was truly gorgeous..  With that power you can have the sound that much louder but with no distortion whatever....it is just so clean.

Anything else to learn?

The evening was 'In The Presence of Jeremy Beadle'...I gave Jeremy his radio mic. to take to his seat in the front row so he could 'comment' as the show went on....great idea and worked a treat ... he took the rip out of my brother and I all night [funny stuff!].  Sadly, on his first entrance he insisted he wanted to  switch the mic. on and off himself [bad mistake].  So when he went to use the mic...guess what?  No sound!  He switched it off instead of on.  Always leave sound to the sound boy!  Only a minor hitch.  The latest generation of radio mics. have 'soft switches' so they turn on over say 2 secs. [to avoid a 'thump']  So when you switch on it is easy to think that it is not working and switch it the other way [off!]....again if you are in that situation...ask the soundboy for a mic. that is 'switched on' and leave it to him!

And finally?

Guess which amp was best...again?  The finale of the entire show featured the entire cast and a bunch of our 'Angels' - the Special Needs kids who will benefit from the proceeds....all of us playing and singing 'Angels'....I played the solo in the middle.......Marshall 4 X 12 at full tilt was just awesome!   A joy to play ... and always delivers the goods.  5 Marshalls on stage and one Peavey bass amp...says it all?

Rob [Mayston]  Creative Director War of the Worlds World Tour staged and directed the show at Congress Theatre - what a diamond...plus Gi Gi .... never far from his side...brilliant.

Chart Comment:

The Sergeant Pepper piece at the top of the download chart....Hmmmmmm?

'You're Beautiful' by James Blunt is a great record, actually his second single and one which perhaps more than any disc in recent memory has helped to propel him from virtual unknown to being one of the biggest stars of the summer. Don't believe me? Just check out the chart performance of his debut album 'Back To Bedlam' which was first released five months ago. In the week that 'You're Beautiful' was released it finally completed its slow climb into the Top 10 and this week spends a further week at the very top, outselling no less a record than Coldplay's globally-conquering 'X & Y'.

Subscriber's Section:

Interesting question on live band recording of a different sort.

Hi Dec

I would like some advice or information with regards to the following:

My Son plays for a youth marching band (The Dolphin Marching Band) based in Bournemouth, not exactly pop music I know but still music.  The band want to record an album of their performance, and put this on sale when they perform at public events.

The Bandmaster asked me to contact you due to your vast experience and knowledge of the music industry, and the fact that I could ask you personally as one of your “One minute Gang”.

I am not sure exactly how we should go forward with this, being larger than the average band (20 members approximately).

Obviously a recording studio would have to be found and booked, although finding a large enough studio would be a good start.  However, I was thinking of a smaller studio with individuals playing their own parts and then mixing the tracks instead of all of them playing together.  Instruments consist of: Drums - Bugles - Bell Lyres - Cymbals

Would you be able to point me in the right direction of a suitable studio, and the possible costs involved?  Can you advise on any legal problems that they may encounter with the sale of this “album”?

Very best regards,

 P*** B. D****** (Bachelors Appreciation Society Member).

P.S The band's website can be found at: www.dolphinmarchingband.org.uk

The usual way to record a band of this sort is to find a venue that you like the acoustics of...a church, a town hall, a village hall of a decent size.  The bigger the better.

You then get quotes from good mobile recording people who have experience of recording bands in these locations.  You will find that normal recording studio engineers and producers will have little experience.  You should ask for examples of their work in this field.

Using a normal studio will take all the 'life' out of the band...because they are used to playing together and they create their own balance.  In a studio you will depend on the engineer [who I guarantee will be useless in this situation!] and you will depend on the mix and the addition of effects etc.

You simply want an accurate recording of the band as you normally hear it.

After recording the band [probably on 24 track recording equipment] it will then have to be expertly mixed in a studio by an experienced 'brass band' mixer and most importantly mastered by an independent specialist mastering suite [never let a studio master a recording...it is a specialist job]

The CD duplication plant will need a mastered 'glass master' for duplication purposes.

As regards the legal side you will only require an accurate listing of of the titles...composers, publishers and accurate length times of each track.

The duplication plant will need this information to apply for an MCPS [Mechanical Copyright Protection Society] license. before duplication....they will need to know the number of CD's to be pressed in order to get the license.

The license money is then paid over to PRS [Performing Right Society] to distribute to the composers and publishers.

You must also have an accurate list of those performing on each individual track.  [If the CD gets played in public, radio, TV then they should become members of PPL [Phonographic Performance Limited] and VPL [the Video side] and are entitled to a royalty for their performance [not from you or the band leader]

P***.....

It is very important to have the project 'sold' before you ever record one note.  There have been many instances of an enthusiastic bunch of people ending up with a garage full of unsold CD's or books!

It is also impossible to cost a project like this.  You have a very specific in setting out the requirements for the project....you have to be happy with the people you approach and simply get 4 quotations.  That is why you must have the project 'sold' so that you can work out the figures.

The gags:  [the rude ones are the best?]

A man approached a very beautiful woman in the large supermarket and said,

"I've lost my wife here in the supermarket. Can you talk to me for a couple of minutes?"

The woman looked puzzled. "Why talk to me?" she asked.

"Because every time I talk to a woman with t**s like yours, my wife appears out of nowhere"
