"You never suffer from a money problem, you always suffer from an idea problem." -- Robert H. Schuller
I was amazed to receive a gold disc award through the mail ...
It goes to prove that there are serious sales to be clocked up from a good presence on the Net. To the best of my knowledge the particular album of my band has not been released in main stream shops and is only available by download and/or hard copy purchase on the Web.
It now sits proudly with my other gold, silver and platinum discs ... [does that sound big time? Grin!] And this recognition of sales prompted me to give advice on building lists and database. See the next part. Be careful with database. It is mandatory in most countries to be associated with a Government run register. In the UK The Serious Writers Guild [ http://www.makehits.co.uk/swgintro.htm ] belongs to The Data Protection Register'.

When Toploader [RIP] famously got signed in the UK they had a database list of 37,000 plus ... any Record Company/Publishing Company would be impressed by that ... but how did they do it?
Yes, I always advise collecting Email addresses at gigs aggressively [no good just handing out pieces of paper and suggesting they might send you their Email address]. Even my band still badger punters for their Email addresses. In fact, nowadays, they are delighted to 'keep in touch' and our list grows each week.
But you don't Have a list? You must be bonkers, no matter what side of the business you are in. I would suggest that you get one QUICK! A mail out to a list with your latest recording can produce sizable dosh with little effort! Think of the 'gong' I just received.
Here is a list building system we have used for four years now
and the results are quite staggering. Join List Bandit for no dosh Today,
And You Could Have Access to Thousands in Less than 24 Hours ... Signup, Login,
& Send! http://www.listbandit.com/index.php/makehits .
Absolutely no dosh is required.

Line 6 has released a new model in its POD line of guitar-focused signal processors, the X3 Pro. The Pro is able to handle two instruments simultaneously, each with a separate chain of sounds and effects. Musicians can alternately treat the system like an A/B/Y box, dividing a signal input into two chains that can be selected or combined for effects such as dual-layering.
A backlit LCD panel displays the effects enabled on each chain, and the processor has a wide variety of inputs and outputs, including USB, MIDI, XLR and 1/4" connections.
The Pro models 78 guitar amps, 24 guitar cabs, and 98 stompboxes and effects, plus 28 bass amps and 22 bass cabs. Additionally, there are six vocal preamp models. Line 6 is selling the Pro for $980.

When I listen to a MySpace track, or whatever, it is just dreadful.
Our sound jockey got himself a JBL 'on tour'. When I heard it I just had to get one ... it is hot. My daughter also bought one. [Selfridges in Oxford St. London]. Great for looking at a Film on DVD while waiting to go on stage.

JBL On Tour, a portable audio system "slightly larger than an eyeglass case and roughly the size of two iPods." JBL On Tour works with all digital music players and personal CD/DVD players as well as laptop and desktop computers. It utilizes a stereo pair of Odyssey transducers and features six watts of total power. JBL On Tour sports touch volume controls, an integrated protective cover and stand, and white-chrome accents. The use of four standard AAA batteries provides more than 24 hours of operation at normal listening levels, according to Harman.. See the pic. at http://www.makehits.com/oneminarchive190308.htm

Subscriber's Section [ Copyright question re. collaboration ]
"Hi Dec,
Happy St Patrick's day to you. I hope you are keeping well.
I need your help! I have a copyright query if you wouldn't mind giving your advice please. Since the Master Class I've mainly been doing collaborations, most often with songwriters in the US. I want to copyright a new song written with a chap in the US and I normally just send it to myself with a certificate of posting and leave un-opened. Poor man's copyright they call it. This won't stand up in court in the US my collaborator tells me (as does their copyright website). However, the US Copyright office says....
"The United States has copyright relations with most countries throughout the world, and as a result of these agreements, we honor each other's citizens' copyrights."
So do you think that if I copyright the song for the two of us in the British way, it would be honoured in both countries for both writers? I gather using their copyright service is expensive and writers usually submit blocks of songs to make it more cost effective.
Kind regards
N***

Hi N***
You have done your homework correctly.
However, USA official copyright is not expensive if you 'manipulate' their system. You are absolutely correct in 'accumulating' copyright material and submitting to Library of Congress ... in one go.
What you propose with your collaborator is also valid. I would suggest that having your own Publishing Company [ http://www.makehits.co.uk/publishing.htm ] and issuing your own Assignment Contracts is equally as valid as the American system. And much cheaper. Although I would have to say, with apologies to USA music folk, the USA system denigrates the rest of the world ... [ "We are the USA - therefore we are the best and most correct!" ]
Either way, if there were a dispute, it would end up in court. Then, as I always say, you have to anticipate the judge's questions and be totally prepared. Of course, it goes without question that you have to be 100% correct before going to law. An official copyright from the USA authorities would be accepted by the judge ... as also would be a signed, dated Assignment contract from your Publishing company ... as also would be the 'Poor Man's copyright'.
Any music copyright contract will state, at the end, which country that the particular contract problems will be heard in ... Be aware of this.
The whole situation is based on PROVING that your toon, or melody or whatever, was first produced in 'hard copy' [that can mean anything from the back of a cigarette packet to a full blown commercial CD] by YOU. It is essential to visualise the day in court, anticipate the judge's questions and have the proof available to hand ... Easy?
It is good to understand that in the whole history of copyright in music there have only ever been 200 cases in total in the USA ... The only notable one was the George Harrison track 'My Sweet Lord'. And I am not quite convinced of the judgment on that.
I am told that the most litigated against writer in the record industry is Michael Jackson [an easy target] .... The story is that his lawyers simply pay off each claimant with $30,000. I would think that a lot of writers make a living out of that scam!

The gags: ..... [ Of interest to UK guys? Gordon Brown is the Prime Minister of the UK or is he the President? ]
"A
man died and went to heaven. As he stood in front of St. Peter at the
Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him.
He
asked, 'What are all those clocks?' St. Peter answered, 'Those are
Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie, the hands
on your clock will move.'
'Oh,'
said the man, 'whose clock is that?' That's Mother Teresa's. The
hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie'.
'Incredible,'
said the man. 'And whose clock is that one?' St. Peter responded, 'That's
Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abe
told only two lies in his entire Life.'
'Where's
Gordon Brown's clock?' asked the man. 'Gordon's' clock is in
God's office, he's using it as a ceiling fan'.
