"My Emails Are Written With Good Humour And Should Be Read With A Smile"

MENU:

The 'Examiners' are at it again

Every few months I get a rash of 'Self Appointed Examiners of Dec's Material' folk trying to cause me problems.  Sad people.

I say 'trying' to cause me problems because in effect they cause me no problem at all.  They tend to take advantage of my promise that I will answer one Email from anyone about their music ... and that promise is true....check it out now if you like.  But thereafter they get handed over to the relevant department of our various organisations.

You see, I constantly say to anyone who listens: "The truth is correct at all times".  I advise guys to never tell fibs, be truthful, honest in your dealings and you will never have a problem in your music career.  I have had to deal with sc*mbags through my years in Show business...you know what?  I just know that what goes round comes round...they always come unstuck.

These 'examiners' simply tell lies, make up wild stories and bend the truth about me.  They feel they can be anonymous on the Net.  Sad, sad people.  I used to worry about them, but now I sleep like a baby.

I get the most Hate Mail on the Internet.

You will find it astonishing that I get the most hate mail on the music net.  Quite astonishing.  I go through each day trying to do good, help music guys and spread the word that success is attainable...it's actually easy, the method is available for all to have .... I smile when I think that you can only get it through The Serious Writers Guild ... but that is the simple truth.  I have never seen it anywhere else, although I saw an article in the PRS monthly magazine today that may as well have been written by me.  It confirmed all that I say about the only real confirmation of success in the music industry is 'money'.

It was well written and it was nice to see such an august body as Performing right Society in the UK totally agree with me.

“And before you suggest that this is nothing short of ‘selling out’, remember that many before you have discovered that it is possible to stay true to your musical principals and still have as career.  What’s less likely, however, is for an act to fail to generate any money, for anyone, and to still have that career.  It’s important to remember that you work in the music business and while it’s crucial that the people you work with [labels, publishers etc.] believe in your music, it’s also important that they are confident that you will generate the revenue necessary for creativity to flourish”

Thanks to 'Demo to Limo' PRS 'M' magazine Sept 2005

Some guys just cannot abide success in music

It seems that it is a simple fact that guys who have never had success in their lives cannot stand the fact that there is someone like me telling music folk that the fame and fortune is available...it is possible.  But you have to be prepared for some serious change....if you have not had any success doing it the way you have always done it, then your way is obviously wrong.  Simple?  Looks simple to me!

The  Second Search Engine Optimisation tip:

For those with Web sites.

First tip I gave you was to link to successful sites relevant to what your site is hoping to achieve.  You can do no better than link to us at our three sites:    www.makehits.com www.makehits.co.uk and www.liveperforming.com

Many have done that ... you will notice the change in your search engine positions.

"Very best auto responder:
I will be out of the office for the next 2 weeks for medical reasons.
When I return, please refer to me as ' Margaret' instead of 'Steve'."

Next the 'on site' improvement.

Go to your HTML source page .  This is easy.  Simply  mouseclick 'view' in the toolbar then 'source' and you will see the HTML [code] for your page.  If you have designed the site yourself or your web designer has done it I would almost bet that the 'title' ... which you should find toward the start of your HTML coding, is titled with 'New Page 1' or has no title whatever....right?

I advised you to buy a simple book on HTML coding language to get a working knowledge [that's all you need] of the language that your site is written in.

Find where the 'title' is.  It will look like this:  <title> Blah blah blah blah </title>.  Simply change the title to what you want your site to reflect.  For example "The greatest film music | film score music and TV Film Background music".  Search engines do not like the word 'and'.  Keep the title to below 12 words and use the symbol | [usually on the left of your computer keyboard] . ... use that instead of 'and'.

That will be the 'title' that the search engines will spider and find.  Then they will reproduce that in the search engine findings when anyone is looking for, in this instance, 'film music making' or any combination of the words in the title you have designed.  I am keeping this simple for non web site guys.  Members who want fuller information simply call me...you have my number...or Email me.

To have a  link back to your site just go to www.makehits.com/addurlcom.htm and fill in your site's details.

More next week.

Soundproofing:

Carpet padding is not only thinner and denser than foam, it is easier to cut and position. Density matters when it comes to noise. As a general rule, it takes more power to move a larger mass. The heavier the material is, the better it'll be at stopping sound.

"Progress might have been all right once, but it has gone on  too long."

Does this sound like a recipe for success?

From the Internet Music Conference (posted on CD Baby.com).  Sounds like she listens to Dec?

One artist made the biggest impression on me at this conference. I noticed her first because she's gorgeous, but the other stuff quickly made that unimportant - and there's an inspiring lesson in here.

Her name is Rayko. Japanese musician from L.A. She was going up to every single person at the conference introducing herself, getting into great conversations, finding out what everyone does, taking notes. Every time someone handed her a business card, she grabbed her pen and wrote down notes about that person on the back, to help her remember. She probably befriended hundreds of people in 3 days, including me.

She's decided to get successful in 2-3 years instead of 8. How? Try to digest this:

She made a great rock record with the best musicians and producer she could get.
She hired a great director and made an exciting, professional MTV-ready video.
She took clips of that video to make 30-second commercial spots which she gets onto local TV stations before she goes to play a town on tour.
She gets to every town a day before the show to do countless meet-and-greet interviews, in-store appearances, flyer-promotion, and every other promotion tool you've ever heard of.
She gets right into the crowd after every show is done to sell CDs and sign up hundreds of people to the mailing list.
She answers every fan letter with a hand-written letter.
She immediately sends a thank-you card to every biz contact she meets.
She does great photo-shoots to give a her a ton of marketable photos.
She's hired a successful marketing company to do her promotion, publicity, and radio.
She's got an incredible press kit which is promptly FedEx-ed to anyone who needs it.

And all the while, she's constantly practicing and writing and recording new music.
"Don’t look down on somebody unless you are giving them a hand up."

The visual laugh

We all like a laugh, so each week I will give you a 'visual' laugh, just mouseclick on the link [don't forget to come back?].

You will need  Power Point program or Windows Media Player for these visuals...should be on your computer. Don't forget to hit Alt and Return to make the picture full size.

Great fun and a lovely baby pic.!

"The income curve is way up on last year - in fact I achieved 2/3rds of last years total income just in the Spring this year, took August completely off work to write music without money worries, and we are on track this autumn to exceed last year's income by the end of October.  That's about double the money, for about half the time spent compared with last year.

Chart Comment:

Considerable change around this week.  But the UK main chart is different to the USA and the Download chart.

After a couple of weeks of turnover at the top it is something of a relief to report that an element of stability creeps back into the chart, the commanding lead enjoyed by the Pussycat Dolls last week enables them to spend a second week at Number One with 'Don't Cha'. Entertainingly the backlash against them has begun already in some quarters with the most gleeful reports centering around the discovery that 'Don't Cha' was originally recorded by its composer, Tori Alamaze who found a potential hit single taken out of her hands when it was decided that the Pussycat Dolls were far more marketable.

The biggest new hit of the week goes to Sean Paul who storms back onto the chart with his first single in 20 months.

Interesting changes made since a 'demo consultation'?

Morning Dec!

I CANNOT BELIEVE that I was stupid enough to send you a demo for consultation  .... 'Now I Am The Voice' some months back .... BEFORE completing 'Make a £Million' ........   You rightly pulled it to pieces in a positive and constructive way .... I am now sitting here going red in the face thinking I submitted it without having completed the course!!!  What a clutz!!

Using your advice, thoughts and information my music is now majorily different and massively improved.  Modest yet vital improvements to my home studio ...Yamaha Motif rack,  Behringer composer pro, Marshall JMP-1 (£120 from eBay!!**).  Great silence in recordings now too.

A serious thought for the maestro of the Serious  Writers Guild :
Like many others I travel a great deal by car and subscribe to the idea of the 'University of the car' i.e. listening to spoken word (as well as music) CDs every moment I get .... Why not produce a CD version of Make a £Million .... think how great that would be ... you could even use real music examples etc .... For example, I have played your demo consultation loads of times in the car .... going ouch ouch each time (no pain no gain)... and that has really helped me focus on asking the right questions about what i am doing musically.

Dec many many thanks again.  Please keep up the outstanding work that you do .... it's inspiring to know people that care and dare!

All the very best

My Reply:

Many thanks for your kind words.

I am always wary that I can be too 'direct' in my demo consultations....but then I feel that "if you can't stand the heat...etc."

You have a great module in the Yamaha Motif...definitely flavour of the month at the moment.

You seem very serious about your productions...and with that in mind I would suggest you change your whole system to Mac ... if you have not already.

I recently advised a Member to convert and the results are quite shocking.  The real price was 'crazy'.

Mac G4 tower, keyboard, mouse [with Logic installed although he did not use it] NEARLY NEW -  £200

Mbox fitted with Pro Tools, Reason, Factory [Joe Meek Compressor etc.], Ableton Live, T Racks, Amplitube, Sampletank,   NEW   £215 [from USA]

Edirol UM2 [USB - two midi in, two midi out] NEW [Guitar Amp Keyboard Centre] £52

Belkin USB hub [one in 7 active USB's out]   Currys   NEW    £49

Monitor [borrowed from existing PC, now used for office work as it should be]  Wouldn't be a cost as it is impossible to use the two computers together.

Total cost for state of the art, all singing, all dancing professional set  up  to be proud of and bring you in line with 'the big boys' .... £516.

Re recording the 'How To Make A $Million Course"

I have recorded 'The Art Of Live Performing' ... and that was a technical triumph....gets huge reaction...both as a download and as a two CD's a month course.  www.liveperforming.com .  I got enormous pleasure recording it .. and even more pleasure from the 'thank-you's'

I will record 'How To Make A $Million' ... but my immediate goal is to release '57 secrets of a Hit Record' in the next month.   Watch for the Email shot

The gags:  [ do you fly often?]

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying XYZ airline." He said that in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?" "Why no Ma'am," said the pilot, "what is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land or were we shot down?"
