MENU:The MySpace Revolution
It seems every time I catch a glimpse of a TV show that features any new talent the emphasise is always on their success on MySpace.
Yep, we in the serious side of the dosh making business thought that it was a 'flash in the pan' ... a gimmick ... whatever. But now we are all realising that My Space is changing the way our business works ...oh yes, you still have to have the product that the 'public want' ... rather than what you think the public need, and that is still the prime point.
Put together a situation where you have a stunning LOOKING product plus great performing ability and a great, innovative, never heard before, style and music presentation and you can have massive success on My Space...which will eventually be picked up by the Record and Production Companies.
A Word Of Warning:
Don't forget that nothing in this life [and particularly in Show Business/Music Business] has ever been achieved without hard work, the My Space idea does involve hard work ... whether YOU do it or the record company/production company/publishing company/PR company does it ... but someone has to do it.
To manage 90,000 friends on My Space and keep them happy with Blogs, Email messages and general encouragement re. your products takes a lot of time and effort. Will YOU do it? Current estimates are of working solidly for 2 hours, religiously, every morning.
I have a further small point of major interest ....when will the honeymoon period be over? When will MySpace start charging ... or at very least realise that there is a lot of dosh to be earned here?

Beware of dodgy Shure microphone copies
"Trading standards officials in Liverpool seized a large quantity of fake microphones based on the Shure company's products .
According to the Liverpool Echo (September 11, 2006), three boxes containing 45 counterfeit Shure microphones were recovered during a recent raid in the Maghull area of the city. Trading standards officers were said to have worked closely with Merseyside police throughout the operation .
While Dennis Harburn, managing director of Shure Distribution UK, was unable to comment on an investigation still in progress, the operation will inevitably highlight the urgency of the company's own anti-piracy campaign. Earlier this month, Shure UK launched a new section on its website dedicated to creating awareness of counterfeiting in the professional audio industry, and to tell customers how they can best protect themselves from buying inferior faked goods.
Anti-counterfeiting advice will also be provided on other European Shure websites, while a new logo will help to reinforce the message on Shure material including banners and brochures. Additionally, Shure Asia is working to stem the flow of illegal copies being manufactured in the region.
SM58 and Beta 58 are among the well-known mics. said to be the subject of counterfeiting action, with many being sold on the internet. EBay is the prime place, but there are other sites as well where this is happening. Most PA rental and pro people would spot the difference straight away, but end-users [might not]… these are very good copies."

A great book on composition
"A great book to learn about composition is 'The Study of Counterpoint' by Johann Joseph Fux (Grandus ad parnassum) - that's the book Hayden, Mozart and Beethoven learned from. The reader must be able to read music to work with it - but the rewards are great. You might want to pass this on to fellow members and One hot minute readers.

Stealing Clipboard Info
Have you ever copied information to your clipboard, then later went online? If the info you copied was of a sensitive nature, then you’ve really got to pay attention to this.
Did you know that a website can easily snatch the info on your clipboard with about one line of JavaScript? It's true. Not all browsers are susceptible to this, but Internet Explorer is. Copy any line of this article and mouseclick:
http://www.worldstart.com/clipboardtest/clipboard-test
(Thanks to World Start for providing this link.)
Just imagine if that info had been a password, credit card number, or bank account info! Want to know how to disable this "feature"? Read on.
1. Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu, Internet Options.
2. Click the Security tab, then press the "Custom Level" button.
3. Under the "Scripting" section, hunt for an entry called "Allow paste operations via script". Set to disable (or at least prompt). I have mine set to prompt so I know who is trying to steal my information.
4. Hit OK until you're back to Explorer.
5. That's it. Now try the page above and see what happens. With any luck, you should find that your clipboard is no longer accessible.

Success Stories
Hi Dec , Thanks for everything so far. Career is taking off big time. We're filling theatres now and the fanbase is growing rapidly - and its all down to you.
In 2003, I started a boyband called Southern Edge - 3 good looking lads who could really perform and sing. We did the showcases, did the talent contests, put together an original act that includes sharp choreography, cutting edge quick-change routines and great special effects and now we're on the road to building a huge fanbase, touring the country doing holiday parks, schools and theatre shows. We write our own material and will be finishing our first album this year.

Hello Dec
Putting the band on myspace in April was a good move, we've been the featured artist on an American Radio show and made some very good contacts for touring.
As you always say, it's not luck....
Lots of love and thanks!

"Some days are a total waste of makeup." Subscriber's Section:Hi Dec,
I wondered what you make of the whole myspace revolution happening? Obviously good exposure but then people can just download your tracks for free-- maybe nice for a tasty sampler. It seems more and more execs are expecting you to have a myspace page-- looks like it will eventually replace the old demo/cd because on myspace you can have linked "friends" which gives execs an idea of whether anyone actually listens to your stuff or not. It also has space for pics / bio / select tracks so really is analogous to the old paper envelope.
Thanks for the great read and sound instruction.
Regards ..... M *** R ******
My Reply:
Hi M***
Yes, Myspace is more convenient than a 'webpage' with slow downloading and dodgy links ... which meant that no one in the Industry would actually follow a link to a music guy's site.
Also the danger factor was huge .... recently we were hit twice [big time] by following links ... one from a supposedly reputable source [T* C**** no less]
We picked up 'Movieland' - another nightmare parasite. A few weeks ago we picked up 'Moviepaz' which is virtually impossible to get rid of ... took two days for experts to get rid.
Until Myspace, no executive would stop work to follow links to listen to slow loading, 25 years too late cr*p .... despite what the mags said. At least now they can log on quickly and get an overview of the band's following and work.
MySpace is an essential tool today ... we have yet to see how this monster organisation will turn it into a money cashcow.... which I can foresee is the ultimate aim.
Regards

The gags: ..... The
Bathtub Test
It doesn't hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time,
and this should help get you started. During a visit to the mental
asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criterion was which
defined whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.
"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a
teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to
empty the bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use
the
bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup.
"No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do
you want a bed near the window?"
