MENU:

Never be afraid of change

I've been away overseas again.  Not far this time....the beautiful island of Guernsey off the coast of France.

This was a highly unusual situation...a smallish venue with a select audience.  The promoter simply wanted my brother and I to perform...no band, no back singers, no massive concert P.A. and light rig.  Back to basics, in other words.  We hated the thought of it...but Hey!  The fee?  Same fee as normal for our huge show...so lots of profit for us, with no overheads.

We played for two nights and the promoter certainly crammed the people in...

What an audience...what a 'happening'.

We adopted the same attitude as Simon and Garfunkel did at their famous concert in Hyde Park....just one acoustic guitar and two voices.  Of course we all know the logic that the fewer the instruments the bigger each instrument will sound...so just one guitar or two guitars can [in the right situation] sound huge.  And just two voices, can similarly sound huge.

Mackie proved itself.

You may remember that I reported a horrible experience with Mackie powered speakers a little while ago.  I was asked at the last second to take over a sound rig with those speakers....it was horrendous!  However, this time I took over in the afternoon, at sound check and set the system up properly.  As usual the resident guy had it set up his own way [not Industry Standard theoretically correct].  I was shocked at what those speakers delivered when the whole system was working correctly.

Lesson to be learned?

Two really.....

1) Never be afraid to strip down your presentation and simply rely on your talent.

2) Always ensure that a sound rig is set up in the theoretically correct way .... it's all in 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' at www.makehits.com

Any sound system can sound Okay, but a good system set up correctly to theoretical Industry Standard will sound fabulous.

Burning CDs called bigger problem than file sharing

Music copied onto blank recordable CDs is becoming a bigger threat to the bottom line of record stores and music labels than online file-sharing the head of the recording industry's trade group said Friday. "Burned" CDs accounted for 29 percent of all recorded music obtained by fans in 2004 compared to 16 percent attributed to downloads from online file-sharing networks said Mitch Bainwol chief executive for the Recording Industry Association of America.

Good book recommendation

Hi Dec,

Got a book to recommend "The little saboteur" by Marco von Munchhausen. Gives a great insight into that part in all of us that resists success in our everyday ventures so often... with some good ideas on how to get it working in your favour...

A sample : "Principle No. 13 No deadline - no action!

Your inner saboteur avoids action (he's a lazy character), so he tries with all his strength to prevent anything remotely resembling a deadline.  He keeps whispering in your ear that a creative person doesn't need any regulations.
But this is a serious mistake when it's a question of decisions that have any prospect of successful outcome.  Without planning and deadline you are leaving the realization of your intentions to chance - and chance hardly ever cares about realization!

The freer your spirit, the less likely it is that you will "spontaneously" carry out your project, particularly in the case of a major project or a lasting change of behaviour.  Your little saboteur knows this, and will try all possible means to prevent a specific plan..."

It's all simple, but the book kind of personifies that part of yourself (The German concept of "schwein hond" or pig-dog) and that really helps to recognise that behaviour in yourself...

Anyway, great book, heartily recommended,

Mike

Drummer Wanted for 'hot' current metal band:
Maybe there's a metal-head among the members and subscribers, ability is a must of course as is dedication and reliability. It doesn't matter where the drummer is from, maybe someone abroad may want to move to London.

Anyone interested can look at the website, www.furnaze.com, check and listen to some sound bites to see if they like the music and can actually do it and then contact us.

"I registered for your ’Make a Million’ programme two years ago, and must say that I’ve found it to be one of only two programmes which are worth  the money (actually worth more than the money but I won’t spoil your pricing for future customers!) Your books have been specific, effective, practical and with the least amount of fluff!

I also find that two years on, I’ve absorbed the information so that it’s automatically there for me, without much effort seemingly.

Chart Comment:

Quite amazing how the chart on this side of the pond is getting to the solid state of the USA chart...little change week by week.

The James Blunt/Daniel Powter chart hegemony continues with 'Bad Day' locking horns at Number 2 behind 'You're Beautiful' for a third straight week. This also means a fifth week at the top for the James Blunt single, easing it past Crazy Frog to become the second longest-running chart-topper of the year. Indeed not since 1998 have we had two records top the charts for longer than four weeks in the same calendar year, but James Blunt and Tony Christie have both managed it in the space of a few short months.

James Blunt also reigns supreme at the top of the albums chart yet again. James is the first artist since Celine Dion (in 1995) to top both the singles and album charts for five consecutive weeks.

A sage warning!  Read on.......

Things had been going really well with the band, a couple of great reviews in Germany and Austria, but we had to sack our drummer for not showing up at rehearsal a 2nd time and, as you always say, one is only as good as the worst member of the band. Not enough to play well...
Now, we have auditioned a couple of guys but they were unable. So - who do we call...Dec of course.

Maybe there's a metal-head among the members, ability is a must of course as is dedication and reliability. It doesn't matter where the drummer is from, maybe someone abroad may want to move to London.
Anyone interested can look at the website,

Had one guy from a music school who said 'yes, I'm fairly confident I can do it'...oh dear...he couldn't play the bass drum in time even at a slow tempo....

Thanks Dec for your continued inspiration and good vibes!

I am putting a short bit in 'One Minute' re wanting a drummer...I have added your Email...I hope that is Okay...should go out tonight.

You are learning about drummers?  Hmmmmmmm!

Bass players are even worse in my opinion and experience.

You are realising that it is hard to find guys who actually enjoy the success rather that the playing.  It is best to follow my advice and have the parts written for every member of the band ... So they can be replaced quickly, with little hassle.

A pal of mine makes a heap of money as a 'Robbie' tribute and a 'Greenday' tribute.  He follows my advice ... Has the parts for every toon....that way he is not relying on the vagaries of 'musicians' ... He has a choice of 4 guitar players, 4 drummers, 4 bass players and loads of brass when he does his 'Robbie'.

I saw his 'Greenday' the other night...stunning!  And all session musicians!   Incidentally the top guys love the challenge of 'metal' and such.   They also know the importance of 'performing'.

It is a nightmare doing it the amateur way...rehearsing up a band.

The gags:  [a religious one for a change....don't get offended!]

Pope's skull cap:

After the passing of Pope John Paul II, the Cardinals had the duty to go through the late Pope's personal effects. One of the Cardinals noted that there had once been an inscription on the inside of the Pope's skullcap.

The inscription was obviously very old and much obscured from wear and the passage of time.

Curious, the Cardinals sent the skull cap for study at the Vatican's antiquities department.  Experts applied themselves to the task utilizing the latest in computer technology and encryption analysis.

They found that the inscription was in the ancient Hebrew language and after much work, they cracked the code and translated the text.

The results were handed to the perplexed Cardinal who read:

Benny & Malka's Wedding 19th October , 1935 Krakow, Poland
