A Chance to follow what I will do? [See us in the chart in the next weeks?]

Hi Gang

I have to be short this week ... I am working a 236 hour a day week at the moment ... read on -

It's not like me to boast [grin!] but I am over the moon with excitement at what is happening in the next two weeks.   Now you know why I have been quiet recently ...  because the preparations have been humungous.

Universal have cottoned on to the fact that I have been in this business since 1958 ... making that 50 years in a wonderful Industry .... hits coming out of my ears through my career.  I started when at school, aged 12 years ... crazy really!  Performing almost every night while studying ... that was tough.

So they are releasing our 70th album entitled 'I Believe - The Best of The Bachelors' ... all the hits plus more and also brand new recently recorded material .... one of the new tracks 'Somewhere' is getting a lot of attention ... tipped for a single.

So, it looks like Dec will be in the chart again .. sounds crazy to me ... but Hey!

In the UK - Check out

FRIDAY 18TH JULY ... BBC BREAKFAST ... Presenters: Louise Minchin and Chris Hollins  ... 9 am approx.

Also the prime time 'This Morning' show ... on Monday 21st 11.30 am approx. ... on the release date.  We will be all over the newspapers and doing lots of Radio stuff ... including my favourite 'Front Row' on Radio 4 .. that is another life time ambition realised!

Amazon are doing a pre-release special for pre-orders.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001BLGTHK/ref=pe_3451_11960121_pe_snp_THK

Am I excited?  What do you think?

And why the success?  Because I always believe in the philosophy of Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey and myself:  "when you get to the top, always send the elevator back down for the next guy".  It's an idea I try to give to all other successful guys but they rarely subscribe to it.

"There is an eloquence in true enthusiasm that is not to be doubted." Washington Irving

The Reaction? [ what other guys are saying? ]

Wonderful philosophy! My friend and singer/songwriter Bob Wright is of
the same generation as you but he is still waiting on the ground floor
for you to send that elevator back down. Why don't you check out his
material at:

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

My Answer:

I++

You will know that I advise and mentor many in the Pop Industry ...
film and TV music making guys as well.

I know that many posters to this group will absolutely scream and
shout when they read the next few words.

No one in the mainstream industry will follow a link, download an
attachment or access any Internet sourced music.  Far too dangerous.

My simple instruction to my staff is not to do it!

However, the temptation, from our point of view, is still there.  In
the recent few months we have been shut down for four days with
Moviepaz virus and Movieland virus and more recently by a new one, I
think it was called Prefetch.  This involved huge IT expense in
cleaning the systems - and lots of idle hours.

In dealing with Universal re material to be used in the new CD being
launched on 21st I said: "I bet you want a CD and not MP3" ... they
said "absolutely ... can't stand MP3" ... it was almost a 'how did YOU
know' situation ... truth is I have always known!

So, Ian, your link may prove to have sensational material ... but no
one in the 'real' world of the Music Industry will click on it.  There
are, however, the absolute Industry Standard ways of getting your
stuff heard, bought and the money delivered to your bank account.
And that is all I have done for my whole career ... not boasting, I'm just
telling the truth.

"It's not boasting when you can back it up!" ... Muhammad Ali

"Some minds seem almost to create themselves, springing up
under every disadvantage and working their solitary but
irresistible way through a thousand obstacles."  Washington Irving

Subscriber's Section [ How to  get solid kick in a dance track? ]

"Hi Dec,

Hope you are well.

A few quick questions...

1. What's your starting pointing for a really solid kick sound in a dance track, and how do you make it cut through without just turning it up and drowning everything?

2. How do you create an exciting snare roll that sound's smooth and natural (i.e. not like a machine gun).

Thanks in advance, as always, Dec.

Best wishes,

A*****

A*****

The two questions are answered in one!

The secret is sample CD's.  Kicks are phenomenal on BlackButta 3 from Time and Space.  I literally have thousands of Kick samples.  The current best on synths are the Korg Triton and Yamaha Motif [this one is superb for Hip Hop/R&B]

The other mighty tool is the Alesis DM5 drum module [my tool of choice].  An oldie but extremely flexible.  All the samples are very EQ friendly.

It has to be understood that we would get the kick that is closest to what we want ... EQ it and compress it [I use a DBX 266XL over the whole drum group.]  We then add other kick samples to give the final jumping kick that tonally suits the track.  It is essential to just take enough of the frequency space to allow for bass and other low frequencies that may occur ... although the best way to show off low frequencies is to solo them.  It is worth considering that we use a totally different kick for each track as the tonal features of a track will be different to the next project and the one before.

The trick then is to resample the finished kick ... so that you add it to your personal collection.  I use the very old but popular still [Norman Cook?  Kay Cee?] Akai S950 for this type of work.  You can then store your kicks etc. on floppy discs ... makes your sample library very easy to access and use.  I have mine numbered and catalogued on computer, so a quick 'word' search finds me the sample I want.

It is important to understand that the bottom end used on hit records is never as massive as most music makers think.  The massive bottom end is delivered by 60,000 Watts in a dance club ... it's not mixed in the track!  So, it is important to continually A/B test your mix against a comparable track that is in the chart this week.  And I do mean that is in the chart this week.  That will show that your thinking is chart thinking [if there is a track similar to yours in the chart]

Drum rolls, again are available on sample CD's .... there is an excellent one on the Triton which I have used liberally through a recent project. You will have to research the CD's to find a collection of drum rolls ... I got some from a friend working in Pontins ... they use tymp rolls and snare rolls for silly competition results ... you know the sort of thing?  It is important to quick fade the finishes and add a little reverb.  This is easy on Protools.

It is virtually impossible to create a convincing roll with a sequencer.  If you have a particular idea you want to create it may be worth while asking a tame drummer friend to come in and then sample different rolls [there are dozens of different types]... and also differing lengths.  Keep the mic. a foot away [to pick up the snare wire] or under-mic. [my preferred method].  Best to experiment to get the sound you want .. and one that is nearest to the snares you use on your current tracks.  Make sure he puts a new skin on .... buy it for him?

Regards
