Dear Dec,  I am half way through your course and enjoying every minute of it...my progress is slow but real and  I'm sure I'm finally grasping the realities of this wonderful business....  Drew McCormack

Damn I like that, it gets rid of all the chaff.  I had not thought of my own designer but, now I am.  I had not thought of publishing my own music, but now I am.  EVERYTHING is CHANGING and I'm smiling   It's gettin' better all the time!
I've been performing since I was 8 and I've done a good act so far...NOW...the sky is the limit.  Act as if !  "The only thing ahead is SUCCESS."
You're my good friend, I hope someday I'll give good reason to be yours.

I have received your appraisal. Now, first of all, I have to thank you for your invaluable input on the topics covered. I really didn’t expect it to be as blunt, and in four face, as it is, but it does the job perfectly well. Thank you, Dec! Finally somebody who cuts right through the chase. Sincerely, Martin Eibel

Thanks for sending the report so quickly.  There was so much stuff on the CD.

First of all, I especially liked your straight up, brutally honest style -- quite rare these days!  I really do think it was more than excellent.  I am a bit embarrassed after hearing the critique, but all in all it was very educating, good value for money.   Niko Nyman
============================

Giving the truth is correct at all times!

A lot of guys out there just can't stand the fact that I speak the truth at all times.  In other words, if you ask me for an opinion you will get it straight from the hip, warts and all.

I have never believed in 'patronising'.  Or saying the right thing [no matter how wrong or unhelpful] just in the hope that some guy will send me money.  Nope!  I don't do it, and I cannot stand music guys who do.

You will know that I always encourage music guys to give, give, give to worthwhile personal charities.  Simply because it works!
So, you will see above that guys who send me their Demos and Records for commercial evaluation get an extremely accurate evaluation....will it make money?  Will it not?  I tell them absolutely straight.  But, however, they also get the 'way forward' ... the way to improve, get a more commercial edge and join the big boys.  If that is their wish, of course. I always respect the fact that not all songwriters and music makers want to be in there with the 'big boys'....they simply want to enjoy their hobby...making music that THEY like.

The good thing is that they learn what is missing in their material should they ever wish to get 'commercial'.  Then, at least, they can honestly say: "I could do that, if I really wanted to....'cos Dec has showed me"

"You can bring a horse to water by you can't make it drink"

Just the same as the questions I get asking me how many Members of The Serious Writers Guild have actually had Number Ones [and they have!]....the answer has always got to be that I can show you...because I have done it many times....but would you have the tenacity, the sheer guts, perseverance and love of hard work that I have?

[While everyone else is down by the pool, I am tapping away on my lap top .....95degrees in the shade....they think I am mad!]

Hey, just a thought!

Every time I go overseas I spend the first three days in absolute h*ll.  I've always been like that.  I just feel totally out of sorts....just 'not myself'.  And now I think I have found the secret....you may like to draw near and hear this.

I have never taken salt on food ever in my life.  Just like I have never had a pint glass in my hand - have never had a salt cellar in my hand....don't ask me why!

So, I feel that my salt level tolerance must be quite low....in other words the extra heat makes me perspire [did you like that? I didn't say 'sweat'!] more, and thus I lose extra salt.

On my last trip I read the book: "The body's many cries for water" .... don't read it!  ~I did, drank a load more water than usual and totally diluted my body salts....wow!  Was I ill?  On my last night for some unknown reason I took a huge handful of salt...lay down and ten minutes later I felt 100%.

I have just been through the same deal....I didn't take extra water, except when I was thirsty and this morning I felt awful....took the salt....eased the taste with a load of coke [no not that sort, Charlie!]  voile.....I feel wonderful.  So that situation will never occur again.....

If you ever feel out of sorts in a hot climate....just grab some salt....works wonders!

I am amazed at how my friends help:

I am quite astonished at the calls and Emails I have had from pals offering help with my major benefit show at The Congress Theatre on Friday July 2nd.

Even Bob Mayston....the creative director of the up coming 'War of the Worlds' world tour....he has offered to direct the show....wow!

'Bandit' through my good friend John Waterman are contributing with brochure space.....hey, if you don't subscribe to Bandit newsletter....you should!  Just Email John and tell him Dec sent you....great, genuine guy:  John@banditnewseltter.com

You can be a part of a phenomenal benefit night here in Eastbourne.  I am devising and producing "A Gala Night in the presence of Dame Vera Lynn".  Vera is the legendary Forces Sweetheart, so close to the hearts of every man woman and child in the UK.  A dear old lady now who, it is said, single handed won the Second World War for the Allies...yes - her entertaining the troops meant so much.

My pals, Paul Daniels, Roger De Courcy, Joe Pasquale, Jimmy Hill and my band will be heading up a superb cast.  The top night in Eastbourne's calendar...we are on course to raise £25,000 to aid Eastbourne's special needs children.  7.30 .....Friday 2 July, The Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, East Sussex...Box Office: 01323.412000

Want to come?  See you at the after show party?  Email me or call the credit card hot line on 01323.728005.  You may even want to take some Souvenir Brochure space.  Now that will put your name in front of people!

Have you got material for a Member?

Hi Dec,

I need your help once again.  I'm currently looking for material for my upcoming record, 1-2 songs that have been written by other writers.  Do you have access to any great material in the rock genre with influences from R&B and Hip Hop?  As always, your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Best Regards,

Steve Zaborski

Music/Show Biz News:

Madonna: The singer will play silent movie star Texas Guinan in Martin Scorsese's big screen musical 'Hello Sucker'  It will be her chance to get even with her critics who have slated her actign attempts in the past.  She will co-produce it and also write the music...the album will be her next album release.  With other big names involved this could be the one to earn her the critical acclaim that has eluded her in the acting field.

Penny Lancaster:  Rod Stewart's gird friend has made her debut in Ben Elton's musical 'Tonight's the Night' singing on of Rod's hits: 'Hot Legs'.  She is already a successful photographer and model....now she is adding swinging to her talents.

A simple question:

"How much do you really have to know about all the different side of the music industry?  I want to be successful, I need advice"

My Reply:

Advice?

Make absolutely sure you know everything that contributes to success in our industry.  Learn programming, learn writing, learn how to write music down [even in simplistic fashion], learn how all that outboard kit works.  Learn about stage sound, Front of House Sound, learn about lighting, the best way to get the most out of light rigs, vari-lights, roboscans, par cans.  Stage costumes...the ones that light best and make YOU look the best.  Even stage make-up.  Think I'm kidding?  Think again!

Aside:  I was asked to go to a Gig at Wokingham , a member was appearing...some of the guys were knowledgeable about make-up, the others weren't...what a difference...certainly sorts the men out from the  boys.  The guys who knew and had great make up on [yep, even the fellas] looked 'the business'.  Again, I cover the necessity and the logic in my 'Serious Writers Guild' writings for The Members...if you don't know about make-up, you are dead in the water.

If you leave this to other people around you [management?  Agency?], how will you ever know that it is being done properly?

If you don't know this stuff, how do you know that that little bit of 'lack of knowledge' stopped you getting to the top?

If you leave it to others, how do you know you are not just being lazy?

The gags   [A break with tradition....a poignant piece of prose....that would make a great Chillout track?]

"YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING

A message every adult should read, because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.

"When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the  refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to trust in God.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don't.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry..

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked at you and wanted to say,"Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking."
