Check out the Sharon Osbourne Book.

My Goodness, I get a lot of mentions in the new Sharon Osbourne Autobiography.  All my pals are in there...the bad ones and the really bad ones.  Oh, there are the good ones but the stories of the bad ones are much more interesting.

I had no idea that Sharon was Don Arden's daughter.  My .... could I* tell stories about Don Arden?  He promoted most of our record breaking tours.

I'm having lunch with Philip and Dorothy Solomon next week....now how much would a popular newspaper pay for the stories we will be swapping?  Philip and Dorothy....Don....absolute legends in our notorious business.

Are you a clever music person?

This is short and sweet - and of course doesn't apply to any of our clever friends (only the stupid ones!!).

A South American scientist from Argentina, after a lengthy study, has discovered that people with very low intellect read their e-mails with their hand on the mouse.

Don't bother taking it off now. It's too late.

Tips for Radio interviews

Most music guys are terrified of speaking in public [ join 'Toastmasters' in your local town or city] .

For nearly two decades, Marsha Friedman has been telling folk about the value of talk radio as a means for promoting your music to the masses.  Because we want you to succeed with talk radio, here are some “inside” tips to help you become the kind of guest every host wants to have on his or her show:

1.         Be energetic.  Make sure that you bring ENERGY to the table.  Radio hosts love it when you show enthusiasm on the air.  If you’re excited about your message, the listeners will be excited, too---and more inclined to want to learn more about your book.

2.         Avoid distractions.    If they call you at home, make sure that there are no dogs barking or kids screaming and clutching onto your leg.  Turn off your computer and the television and make sure that you switch off your cell phone.  Shut yourself into a room where you can have total privacy with no distractions so you can stay focused!

3.         Be honest.  Always be open and honest with the host.  Listeners relate better to people who are an “open book.”  Don’t be afraid to be who you really are and say what you really think.  Remember that Howard Stern built an empire by being honest with his listeners!

4.         Define your message.  Before going on the air, know the key points you want to communicate about your book  or music. Make sure you stay “on message” no matter how far off the host’s questions take you.  Always bring the answer back to your own key message.

5.         Be mindful of your word inflections.  Practice saying your main points out loud before your interview.  Remember that it is not only what you say, but how you say it.  Inflections help keep the listener’s interest.

6.         Speak slowly and clearly and make sure that you E-NUN-CI-ATE.  You don’t want your words to mush together.  If you speak too quickly, the listeners won’t be able to understand you.  Make sure to enunciate so that people will stay interested.

7.         Have notes handy, but try not to read from them.  Know your material cold.  Reading your notes or word-for-word answers sounds stiff and rehearsed and you’ll lose your audience.  You want to sound as natural as possible so that your message will be more likely to trigger a buying response.

8.         If you stumble, stutter, or slip-up during an interview, forget about it and move on.  Don’t dwell on your mistakes.  Don’t get flustered.  Stay on message and you’ll be fine.

9.         Don’t get technical or use words that most listeners wouldn’t  know.  Remember that you are trying to get a large audience to relate to you.  Use layman’s terms, if at all possible, and save the four-syllable words for your next game of Scrabble.

10.       Smile when you are on the air.  If you are physically smiling while you are talking, the listeners will feel it.  If you are frowning, they will feel that also.  Although the listeners won’t be able to actually see you on the radio, they will be able to “feel” your interest and enthusiasm.

Remember---your intention for every interview is to enlighten the listening audience about your music and interest them in purchasing it.

If you would like to hear more about talk radio and how it can help you successfully promote your music book, call me or my husband Steve at  [USA]  727-443-7115, ext. 208.  Nothing beats a real-life conversation!

How Smart Is Your Right Foot?

This is so funny that it will boggle your mind. And you will keep trying it at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot. But you can't!!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.   Your foot will change direction!!! I told you so... And there is nothing you can do about it.

"You move with the times, or the times move you."   -   Gordon Ramsey [Kitchens from Hell]

Tip of the Day  [Locked Up?]

No, we’re not talking about the “pokey” or the “slammer”; not even a jail, we’re talking about your computer.

Have you ever tried to shut it down, only to have it hang on the shut down screen? Or maybe it's locked up beyond any CTRL-ALT-DEL help. You may even find that hitting the power button doesn't seem to do anything.

If you really need to force a shutdown via the power switch, press it in and hold for about 6-8 seconds. That should turn the computer off.

Only do this as a last resort—you should always try to shutdown your computer properly.

Dear Dec

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying The Art Of Live Performing since starting the course last year.

My band, BedHead, have been doing better and better. I’d worked hard on our sound and our songs to make us stand head and shoulders above the rest on the circuit. The result of this single minded hard work was that we were the hardest working band in Scotland in 2005, performing at 304 gigs.

I’ve also been reading your '57Secrets of a Hit Record' book. What an absolute mine of information!

Here is a question re what royalties that can be collected

Hi Dec...I have a question...

I have been working with a reggae band for the last month and have co - written a song that they want to record. The band have already got a record   deal and they want me to go into the studio and produce this song.

What are my options regarding copy write and production payment or royalties(the easiest options)

Thanks Dec ...  T**

My Reply:

Hi T **

Our rules are "one short reply to ONE question FOR NON-MEMBERS, Members of 'The Serious Writers Guild' have unlimited personal access to Dec by direct telephone, Fax and Email , apply at https://secure.mistral.co.uk/makehits/swgappsecure.htm ".

<<<<<<<<<they want me to go into the studio and produce this song.>>>>>>>>

They are mad!  It is important to realise this fact: "Never go near a studio without the hottest Hit producer you can afford" .  And I have a feeling you are not the hottest Hit producer around?

It is impossible to just stumble on the methods for making a Hit record...the producing skills have got to be learned and learned hard.  'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' is the best programme for this knowledge https://secure.mistral.co.uk/makehits/swgappsecure.htm

I cannot understand how their record company is allowing this.  They must be extremely small time.

<<<<<<<<What are my options regarding copy write>>>>>>>

I'm sure you mean 'copyright'?

As soon as any song is committed to any kind of hard copy....paper, tape, CD ... then it is automatically, legally, copyrighted and belongs to the writer.  In your case yourself and your co-writer.

I advise all songwriters to own their own music publishing company so that all material can be held in the company and properly protected.  Also, it ensures that you get 100% of the royalties instead of 50% which a publisher will allow you to have.

You should have your own company and should have a single song assignment contract signed by yourself and your co-writer ... then that is lodged with PRS to ensure you get the correct royalties..

Go to www.makehits.co.uk/publishing.htm to get 'How To Start Your Own Music Publishing Company For Less Than £100".

<<<<<<<production payment, royalties >>>>>>>>

This is purely done by negotiation.  Most top producers work on small out of pocket expenses plus a points [percentage] deal.  Pete Waterman always boasts that he never charged more than £500 in expenses for any production but made many $Millions in percentage royalties.  The top producers would have to be convinced the track is Top Three Potential material before even considering it.   Production royalties are usually 2.5% - 3.5% of gross retail.  I am talking here of producing.... not programming on computer....that is a different skill.

The producer organises every single detail...the studio booking, musicians, session singers .... then directs the sessions and directs the complete vocal performance [making it a Hit performance] ... then directs the mix and finally arranges the mastering.

Best advice?  Never switch the studio lights on until all contracts are agreed and signed. To do otherwise is amateur and a recipe for total disaster.

You are completely forgetting the most important royalty PPL [Phonographic Perfoprmance Limited] which is paid directly to the performer/performers of the record every time it is played ANYWHERE in public...TV, Radio, clubs, venues, pubs etc.etc..

The gags: .....     A twist on an old one?

A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him. The
waitress asks for their orders. The man says, "A hamburger, fries and a
coke," and turns to the ostrich,  "What's yours?" "I'll have the same,"
says the ostrich.

A short time later the waitress returns with the order. "That will be
$9.40 please," and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the
exact change for payment.

The next day, the man and the ostrich come again and the man says,  "A
hamburger, fries, and a coke." The ostrich says, "I'll have the same."

Again the man reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change.

This becomes routine until, the two enter again.  "The usual?" asks the
waitress.

"No, this is Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked potato, and
salad," says the man.

"Same," says the ostrich.

Shortly the waitress  brings the order and says, "That will be
$32.62."  Once again he man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and
places
it on the table. The waitress can't hold back her curiosity any longer.
"Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact
change out
of your pocket every time?"

"Well," says the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the attic  and
found an old lamp.  When I rubbed it a Genie appeared and offered me
two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything,  I
would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would
always be there."

"That's brilliant!" says the waitress.  "Most people would wish for a
million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want
for as long as you live!"

"That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the
exact money is always there," says the man.

The waitress asks, "But, sir, what's with the ostrich?"

The man sighs, pauses, and ans wers, "My second wish was for a tall
chick with a big butt and long legs who agrees with everything I say."
