My magic illusion of last week [ I love 'magic' ]
You will not know this, but I am a total lover of all things magic ... I am like a child when it comes to illusions.....So......
I was heart broken when so many 'One Minuters' Emailed me to disclose how the David Copperfield trick was done [remember the illusion from last week? www.makehits.com/DavidCopperfield.pps ] I was devastated! [aaaaaaaah!]
"Frustration is trying to find
your glasses without your glasses."
I am always looking for better ways of conducting my business from lap-top when I am overseas ... I have never quite got it fool-proof and usually end up so frustrated. Systems gradually get better year by year ... but they are nowhere near being the perfect systems that the press make them out to be.
A pal in Spain with the same problems as me [he lives on top of a remote mountain close to Julio Iglesias] told me of a new mobile phone system ... check it out ... perhaps it could change your working methods? Looks a little expensive for odd trips abroad, but for the businessman on the move all the time, this must be a great idea.

While emoticons can add much to convey your mood or feelings in an email, you should be warned that there are dangers involved if you download them from the internet. You've seen the yellow, purple, blue, green and red faces, and they are offered as a free download beware. Many of the free offers contain powerful spy ware that will track your web surfing habits and send the information back to the company that gave you the free emoticons.
The company then sells the information to whoever is interested and willing to pay the price. The information they obtain from your computer could be private and personal information which you don't want just anyone to have access to. To be safe don't download any free offer unless you know and trust the company.

Even then use caution. You should always exercise care when downloading anything from the Web. My recommendation is to download onto a floppy, and then immediately run Ad Aware <http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/> which is free, and also your anti-virus program. Since you are running it on your floppy drive contents, it should only take a minute or so to do it.

So that's this Saturday.....the unplugged gig. Chipstead is a little village off the A25 near Riverhead. Nice place. No smoking.
Sunday Jan 28th - The Swan, Forest Row, Surrey 8:15 till 11:00
Really nice venue with good food, wine etc. Apparently does an exceedingly good chipped potato. Kick off at about 8.15 ish.

Dear Dec
Did I forget to say thank you, thank you thank you and thank you. Lets hope this year is my year.
Krisha Gardner.
And another:
I've been 'pro' now for a year and during that year have worked all over the country and into France. We have just been nominated in the following categories by Linedancer magazine - 'Best act' - 'Best Dance album' and several of my tracks have had dances choreographed to them by top Bristish choreographers, one of which has been nominated for 'best beginners dance of '05. ... My music isn't Country as such but it has been well accepted by the community. We've sold thousands of albums this year and e-mailed hundreds and hundreds of tracks around the world.
We've got a full year ahead, I'm earning more than I ever did and a new album will be ready in the next month, choreographers have already been 'bagging' the tracks as they've been mastered.

"I

But it keeps getting harder to find one."
Hi - I have been working with a reggae band for the last month and have co -written a song that they want to record. The band have already got a record deal and they want me to go into the studio and produce this song.
What are my options regarding copy write and production payment or royalties (the easiest options)
Thanks Dec

T **<<<<<<<<<they want me to go into the studio and produce this song.>>>>>>>>
They are mad! It is important to realise this fact: "Never go near a studio without the hottest Hit producer you can afford"
It is impossible to just stumble on the methods for making a Hit record...the producing skills have got to be learned and learned hard. 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' is the best programme for this knowledge https://secure.mistral.co.uk/makehits/swgappsecure.htm.
I cannot understand how their record company is allowing this. They must be extremely small time.
<<<<<<<<What are my options regarding copy write>>>>>>>
I'm sure you mean 'copyright'?
As soon as any song is committed to any kind of hard copy....paper, tape, CD ... then it is automatically, legally copyrighted and belongs to the writer. In your case yourself and your co-writer. In the States they operate a 'belt and braces' system where all writers are encouraged to lodge their work with the Library of Congress for a small fee.
I advise all songwriters to own their own music publishing company so that all material can be held in the company and properly protected. Also, it ensures that you get 100% of the royalties instead of 50% which a publisher will allow you to have.
You should have your own company and should have a single song assignment contract signed by yourself and your co-writer ... then that is lodged with PRS to ensure you get the correct royalties..
Go to www.makehits.co.uk/publishing.htm to get 'How To Start Your Own Music Publishing Company For Less Than £100".
<<<<<<<production payment, royalties >>>>>>>>
This is purely done by negotiation. Most top producers work on small out of pocket expenses plus a points [percentage] deal. Pete Waterman always boasts that he never charged more than £500 in expenses for any production but made many $Millions in percentage royalties.
The top producers would have to be convinced the track is Top Three Potential material before even considering it.
Production royalties are usually 2.5% - 3.5% of gross retail. I am talking here of producing.... not programming on computer....that is a different skill. I am also strictly talking of 'producing' - not being a production company who pay out all the expenses, producing fees, session fees, studio time, promotion etc. That is a different deal altogether ... here we are talking specifically about an independent producer hired for the job.
The producer organises every single detail...the studio booking, musicians, session singers .... then directs the sessions and directs the complete vocal performance [making it a Hit performance] ... then directs the mix and finally arranges the mastering.
Best advice? Never switch the studio lights on until all contracts are agreed and signed. To do otherwise is amateur and a recipe for total disaster. I see this cause problems every single week.
You are completely forgetting the most important royalty PPL [Phonographic Performance Limited] and VPL [Video Performance Limited] which is paid directly to the performer/performers of the record every time it is played ANYWHERE in public...TV, Radio, clubs, venues, pubs etc.etc.. This is usually called 'Harry Fox' royalties in the States. This generates HUGE money from radio plays and TV plays. Always make sure you play or sing on every music production you are involved with ... that way you collect these type of royalties.

The gags: ..... [ Scared of flying? ]
The cabin door opens. Two men dressed in pilot's uniforms walk up the aisle. Both are wearing dark glasses. One is using a guide dog, and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes, and the engines start up.The passengers begin glancing nervously around, searching for some sign that this is just a little practical joke. None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and faster down the runway, and the people sitting in the window seats realize they're headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport.
As it begins to look as though the plane will plough into the water, panicked screams fill the cabin. At that moment, the plane lifts smoothly into the air. The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly, and soon all retreat into their magazines, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in good hands.
In the cockpit, one of the blind pilots turns to the other and says, "You know, Bob, one of these days, they're gonna scream too late and we're all gonna die."
