I can do that

This past few weeks I have been working with some guys that I really respect, talent wise ... rappers, producers, music makers and writers.

Sadly, although I haven't seen them in years, they are no further down the road of success ... and I began to wonder....why?

Stunning talents, but something is missing...what could it be?  We finished the vocals [rapping] on a soon to be released single [it WILL be a hit!] and we got to talking, as you do.

The main points that came out were:

None of them were gigging, they were simply making music...and lots of it.

They all wanted other people to sing their songs, they simply wanted to sit in the studio all day long.

All of them were BAC's [Born Again Christians]

So why, seeing they were all great performers [I've seen them each on stage] have they gone off the idea of performing when we all know that success today is 20% music and 80% visual?

They are all stunning vocalists, rappers, in fact that is why I pulled them in for this project, because they are so good ... but they still want other people to sing their songs, not themselves?

As regards the BAC thing.... I personally love dealing with BAC's because they are just nice to be around.... it seems to have instilled into them that God will provide...so there is really no need to have a killer instinct to get success.

I wonder will they still feel that way at 55 years old?  Broke and embarrassed?

Interesting observations on my 'reverb' article.

Dec:  You have probably already seen this, but here goes anyway:

another nice article about reverb and mixing can be found at

http://www.phys.tue.nl/people/etimmerman/recordingfaq/ThoughtsOnReverb.html

and

As a novice I found them very enlightening at the time.

I haven't seen this for years:

I had the blues,

'Cos I had no shoes,

Until upon the street,

I met a man who had no feet.

Makes you think?

"I hunger for success.  I thirst for happiness and peace of mind.

Lest I act I will perish in a life of failure, misery and sleepless nights" - Og Mandino

Stirling Moss's famous quote:

"I was taught that everything is attainable if you're prepared to give up, to sacrifice, to get it.

Whatever you want to do you can do it, if you want to do it badly enough ... and I do believe that.

I believe that if I wanted to run a mile in four minutes I could do it.  I would have to give up everything in life, but I could run a mile in four minutes.  I believe that if a man wanted to walk on water and was prepared to give up everything in life, he could do that."

 Search History

If you use the Google Tool Bar you can recall your previous searches. This comes in very handy when you are trying to go back to a site you like, but can’t remember the keywords you used in the search. To recall previous searches,  mouseclick on the down arrow in the blue button.  A drop down menu will appear with all of your previous searches.

This can get rather lengthy if you surf the web a lot, and you may wish to clear the history of the searches you have made.
Simply “left  mouseclick” the word “Google” on the left of the bar and you will get a drop down menu.  Mouseclick on “Clear Search History,”
and it deletes the record of prior searches you have made. Don’t have the Toolbar you say ?  – get it at

Hi  Dec

I'm being interviewed tomorrow morning at 8.40am on BBC Radio Somerset Sound 1566MW. They think they may string it out for 15 mins and play a couple of my songs which is very exciting!

If you won't be up that early or aren't local but have internet access, they said they'd put the interview on their website afterwards, so you can listen at your leisure. http://www.bbc.co.uk/somerset and go to the Somerset Sound Radio page.

Let me know what you think!

Subscriber's Section:

Hi Dec,

It's me again. I am in need of your help and advice if you can.

Well I couldn't do it no more (That's working a 9-5) I hate my job and the only thing I can think about is my music and how I'm going to make  dosh from it, so I have quit my job.  Please don't think that I'm being silly, I'm so serious in making a success out of my singing career knew it is the time NOW!
At the moment I have 5 songs recorded up to the best standard I can, I think the last stage is Mastering but the quality is spot on.  I have my website launching any day from now that has my songs on there so the public can buy and find out when I will be next.   I have printed out flyer's to promote my website as well as my song that I would like to push out there "Go crazy for me".

And now that's where I'm stuck!!!!!!!

I don't know what direction to go, I know in your course gigging is the best bet and people can see me and buy my music and so fourth,  but I have been rehearsing and have found a difficult patch think of dance moves to impress people on stage!   Also I need to have a Publishing company so when a record company presents themselves the ball will be in my court.

So the question really is where do I start, I think I have done bits and piece from your course but keep missing the links to it, help Dec Help.

My Reply:

Hi K*****

<<<<<<I think I have done bits and piece from your course but keep missing the links to it, help >>>>

Right through the course I emphasise that everything I advise has got to be done 100%.  There are no short cuts to success.

What it appears you have done is extracted the bits you like and done them ... for instance, making the 5 demos...that is the PIG EASY bit .. and the most enjoyable.

The hard bit is working on yourself...and working on the commercial sellability of your music.

Then working on the visual presentation ... which is, nowadays, 80% of the success.  The music is 20%.

You are now in a position that I see every single day .... you have 5 demos .... but you do not know whether the PUBLIC [not friends or relations] will like and/or buy.

You have not got a knock-out rehearsed, polished, staged and choreographed act that knocks people out. An act that will kill record company executives when they come to see you.

Our business is extremely simple and totally misunderstood by 99.99999% of novices. [a novice is someone who has not made a $fortune from this easy business]

You simply have to provide a product that the record buying/video watching/concert going public want...simple!

The sequence is:

Join 'The Serious Writers Guild' at www.makehits.com - you have done this, but not studied and actioned the programme.
Learn your business, study your craft, copy the best  [just like a brain surgeon]
Realise that it is YOU that the public should want [not your music - the music is the simplest bit]
Gig or have your music gigged
Learn what works when gigging
Sell white labels/merchandise/collect database/fanbase
Have queues down the street with 'sold-out' notices
Stock all local shops in your county with white labels
Increase the number in your band to the number required [with only unbelievable looking, fabulous performers]
Improve the equipment
Play bigger venues, all sold out, sell out every new white label, have 40,000 database

INSTANT SUCCESS [usually after ten years.....or three years with a mentor like me]

K*****..... I would suggest you start back at the very start of 'How to Make A $Million From Your Musicand action every single recommendation.
I am always here for you ... you have my phone number.

The gags: ..... could only be a Texan?

A Texan walks into a bar and notices a very large jar on the counter and sees it's filled to the brim with $10 bills.  The man guesses there must be thousands of dollars in it.   He approaches the bartender and asks, "What's up with the jar?"

"Well, you pay ten dollars and, if you pass three tests, you get all the money."

The man certainly isn't going to pass this up.

  "What are the three tests?

"Pay first," says the bartender.  "Those are the rules."

So the man gives him the $10 and the bartender drops it into the jar.

"OK," the bartender says, "here's what you need to do: First you have to drink that entire gallon of pepper tequila...  the whole thing, all at once...  and you can't make a face while doing it.  Second, there's a pit bull chained-up out back with a sore tooth.  You have to remove the tooth with your bare hands.  Third, there's a 90 year-old woman upstairs who has never reached orgasm during intercourse.  You've gotta make things right for her."

  The man is stunned.

"I know I paid my 10 bucks, but I'm not an idiot!  I won't do it!  You have to be nuts to drink a gallon of pepper tequila, and then do those other things..."

"Your call," says the bartender, "but your money stays where it is."

As time goes on and the man has a few drinks, then a few more, he asks "Where's zat teeqeelah?"

He grabs the gallon with both hands and downs it with a big slurp.  Tears are streaming down both cheeks, but he doesn't make a face.

Next, he staggers out back where the pit bull is chained-up and soon all the people inside the bar hear a huge, noisy, scuffle going on outside.

They hear the pit bull barking, the guy screaming, the pit bull yelping and then....  silence.

Just when they think the man surely must be dead, he staggers back into the bar, with his shirt ripped and large, bloody scratches all over his body.

"Now," he says, "where's the old woman with the sore tooth?"
