Bachelors - magnifico in Japan?

A guy asked me for the lyrics of one of our recordings "Johnny McIldoo" from an Irish album of songs taken from a TV series my band did.  I produced the album.

So, a quick Google search and low and behold what came up?  Check it out  http://i16.jp/j/uk/all/1962.htm .  Now, we had a Number One in Japan, but I never knew we were 'magnifico' in the culture of that wonderful country!  You will have to click on the 'translate' button to read in English.

In fact, just put 'lyrics + Johnny McIldoo' into Google .... gosh my head just got bigger!

The guys are having a blast on MySpace.

Interesting reaction from Members of Serious Writers Guild and subscribers:

The advice you've given me (to read "How To Win Friends and Influence People") has very much improved my MySpace response.

I've found that by carefully selecting individuals who are into my specific genre of music... and by genuinely being their friend (i.e. showing a big interest in them and their life, rather than  plugging my product) that I'm getting good results.

I only spend an hour every evening max though!

Have you read 'The Tipping Point' by Malcolm Gladwell?

It's the latest research on how underground trends are generated and the personal / psychological characteristics of the individuals who will rocket word of mouth.

The conclusion of the book is that in every 1000 (or so) people only 1-3 people will be responsible  for spreading the word to the other 997.

Quite interesting when put in the context of MySpace.

So my advice to new acts......for what it's worth! :-)

1: Very carefully select target audience from their taste in music.
2: Carefully select individuals who have the clout to 'spread the word'.  (i.e. if you're music is pop/dance, look for a 6th form dance class etc.)
3: Genuinely be their friend.

I look forward to your findings and ideas, especially as you are an established act.

Kindest regards .... David Nickerson

And more:

With our MySpace presence - my band signed with professional management at the end of last year after releasing an EP on our own label which got their attention, and myspace was soon booming - This year alone we have been approached by three mainstream Radio 1 DJ's, been booked for two large music festivals and two mainstream BBC TV music shows!

What a nice thought from a member?

The Goose Story:

This coming fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in "V" formation, think about what science has learned about why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following it. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock can fly at least 71% farther than if each bird flew alone. Perhaps people who share a common direction can get where they are going quicker and easier if they cooperate

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it feels the resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of flying with the flock.
If we have as much sense as a goose, we will work with others who are going the same way as we are.

When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing, and another goose flies on the point. It pays to take turns doing hard jobs for our group. The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Finally, (get this!) when a goose weakens or is wounded and falls out of formation, two geese fall out and follow him down to help and protect him. They stay with him until he is either able to fly or until he is dead. They then set out alone or with another formation until they catch up with their own group. If we had the sense of a goose, we would stand by each other like that.

Honk, honk ....  All the best  ....Laurie

Good Pro Tools link:

Thanks for your excellent advice in the past. It's all coming together nicely, going from strength to strength.

I know that you advise everybody who would listen to stick to 'Industry Standard'

Equipment like Pro Tools for example. And as you always say one has to know all the tricks and techniques.

I think the link below is of interest to many members and 'one minute' readers.

These are excellent guidelines for Pro Tools that will come in handy especially when collaborating or transferring a session to the mastering suite (also applicable to other DAWs though).

There's nothing like working with a tidy pro

Here is a dynamite business chance

As most regulars and Members will know I have followed closely a select few of the real 'geniuses' [is there such a word?] in business.  And think about it, if you are in the music 'business' ... you are in 'business'.   I have followed [and become good pals] with those giants in the business and willingly pass on the contacts to Subscribers and Members .... after all, the biggest question I get asked is "how can I make dosh while I wait for my music business to take off?"  I heard another 16 year old on Radio 4 this week...making $fortunes on the Net.

There was the regular guy who makes over $1 Million a year selling a VERY strange gizmo... the grandma who earns $8,500 a month showing people how to rearrange their furniture... and the surfer kid who's raking in $200,000 a year working less than 9 hours a week. And they all have one thing in common...

They're three of the literally thousands of people who are making life-changing incomes of $100,000 to $500,000 a year since following the personal business plans, test results, and marketing secrets my friend Derek Gehl has packed into his newly released "Insider Secrets" system!

You might remember me telling you about Derek...

He's the guy who took over from Corey Rudl, tragically killed in a race car smash at such a young age...he was my inspiration.... in business and in the business of music.  First I wanted to make sure his system will work for my customers and subscribers... so I've asked him if he'd send you a copy.

Derek spent over 4,850 hours developing this system, and he's already tested the strategies in over 1,000 small home-based businesses...

... who are now using them to drive HUGE profits off the Internet!

And not only that -- he's *personally* used these very same strategies to earn $7,845,774.00 online since January 2006.

So if you'd like to see if his system will work for YOU, and help you start and grow your own profit-generating Internet business, then I urge you to visit:

http://www.marketingtips.com

I've asked Derek to leave his case studies and other information up there for you for a couple more days, so you can discover exactly how you can profit from his system, no matter WHAT stage you're at with your Internet business -- and even if you haven't started one at all yet!

P.S. Tons of entrepreneurs and small business owners are already using this system to drive massive profits off the Internet, and you can view all of their results and case studies, and discover exactly how they're doing it.

But this page will only be up for a couple more days, so make sure you visit it right away!

 Hi Dec

Meanwhile I am doing well. The album is getting good reviews and this year I have toured in Switzerland, Austria, Germany & Poland. Also we have a big festival date in Slovenia at the end of the month. And it's only May!

Also did some guitar on a major video game.

Not bad eh?

Best wishes,

Keith Thompson

A  good question that will help you

Hi Dec...

 I have a question though?

You have created a very unique style with your band that has been copied by lots of other bands. I was wondering if you would let me in on your secret on how to create an original style.

My Reply:

Hello C********

<<<<<<<<You have created a very unique style with your band that has been copied by lots of other bands. I was wondering if you would let me in on your secret on how to create an original style. >>>>>>>

Style almost happens by accident ... It is really the ability to listen to what sound the band is making and then lick the best bits of the sound and use it more.

For instance, we were mentored by a guy called Karl Denver [with his trio].  They had a unique way of playing the lead guitar exactly the same as the bass [upright bass] .... This gave a huge sound, even if they two of them played on their own.... There is a technical harmonic reason for that ... Rock bands use that technique a lot.

I found that having one voice above the melody and one under gave a striking, never heard before harmony sound as everyone traditionally had the two harmony voices under the melody.

Also when we sang a sustained 'aaaah' behind the lead voice I would pick the notes for the sustain so that the lead voice was mostly in the middle of the two sustained voices...clever...eh?

It is important, when doing a 'cover' always to refer to the sheet music of the toon [for accuracy] but never to listen to the original version on record....this is essential.  That way you sing the song in your band's unique style.

Never be afraid to change a chord, or sequence of chords to reflect your band style .... We did that in almost every Hit we had.  We also changed lyrics ... Where we felt we could improve.

The most important part of uniqueness is in dress.... The band costumes have to be 'never seen before' ... Sadly most bands fall down here and insist on down dressing [T shirt and jeans] ... Nothing looks more boring and it generally comes from laziness and having no ambition or knowledge about futuristic band trends.

Study the current top bands and improve on how they dress.

My band would spend three weeks looking for the right cuff links....how about that?

Regards

The gags: .....         A look at old age?  But funny!

An 85-year-old couple, having been married almost 60 years, died in a car crash. They had been in good health the last ten years, mainly due to her interest in health food and exercise.

When they reached the pearly gates, St. Peter took them to their mansion, which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen, master bath suite and Jacuzzi. As they "ooohed and aaahed," the old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost.

"It's free," Peter replied, "this is Heaven."

Next, they went out back to see the championship golf course. They would have golfing privileges every day and each week the course changed to a new one representing the great golf courses on earth.

The old man asked, "What are the green fees?"

Peter's reply, "This is heaven, you play for free."

Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisines of the world laid out.

"How much to eat?" asked the old man.

"Don't you understand yet? This is heaven, it is free!" Peter replied.

"Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods?" the old man asked timidly.

"That's the best part...you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven."

The old man looked at his wife and said, "You and your bran muffins. I could have been here ten years ago!"
