What I am getting at is that I was blown away the
other night by a TV special on the life of Dolly Parton. I felt that she
had read every one of my books and been on every show I ever did. But then
it's because every successful person in the Music Business thinks, acts and
behaves in precisely and exactly the same way....the successful
way.
Dolly repeated my advice to all who ask:
"I was always aware that this was the Music
BUSINESS"....the second word is BUSINESS.
She was tough enough to not split the publishing with Elvis when he wanted to
record 'I.....Will Always Love You'....Elvis insisted
on a cut of the writing on everything he recorded...smart 'business' guy.
But that song went on to be the second highest selling single of all time [35
Million] when Whitney Houston recorded it. So who won in the
end?Dec,you know everything!tonight happened exactly the thing you described. I got a call from a big booker. he was like "I'm just around the corner, let's meet in the studio, I got some things to discuss with you"did I look like a superstar? certainly I did :-) then after 10 minutes of waiting, the guy(s) appeared in the studio and to cut a long story short:after I gave them a little example of my performance they booked me 4 (that F O U R) times!!! that's 4 bookings in one day. not bad. Can you believe this? They pay very well by the way and one of the bookings is a BIG 4000 People venue, where I appear together with the winner of German idols! Isn't that wonderful, dec?Everything came together tonight, it was brilliant. the looks, the talking, the attitude.AMAZING. That's so awesome.Thank you, decm*****

USHER
John Travolta: If he dances, we'll be there. A spokesperson for the American Film Institute announced yesterday that the Saturday Night Fever star will host AFI's America's Greatest Music in the Movies special, which will be broadcast on CBS Tuesday, June 22 at 8:00pm. Some of the folks who are expected to discuss the popular tunes include Burt Bacharach, Cyd Charisse, Celine Dion, Art Garfunkel, "Idol" star Clay Aiken, Marvin Hamlisch, Art Garfunkel, Paul Simon and Barbra Streisand. The songs were chosen from a list of 400 songs submitted to 1,500 entertainment leaders. So where will the theme to Porky's land on the charts?
Dolly Parton: And while we're on the subject of songs, this little item from Nashville deserves a mention. Parton will receive "The Living Legend" award today in a special ceremony to be held at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The affair will be taped by GAC television for broadcast on the network in May. Bill Cody will host the festive event that will include a special Parton performance from the Coolidge Theater in The Library of Congress. Past honorees from the music industry include Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Itzhak Perlman and Isaac Stern. Visit the Official GAC site for more information on the 24-hour music video network and Parton's special award.
Britney Spears: The sexy singer wants to invade reality television on her own terms. Spears' representatives are pitching a new series that will feature her adventures on the road with her dancers, crew and musicians during the European portion of her Onyx Hotel Tour. CNN reported that Spears will not only star in the series, but will also act as camera lady by filming portions of the tour herself with a digital camera. No network has picked up on the idea yet. That's not surprising. According to other sources, the tubed tour would cost a cool million per episode ... which makes me wonder how much Spears paid for that digital camera.
Beastie Boys: When the group started to record their sixth album, "To The 5 Boroughs," two years ago at their own studio in downtown New York City, Fox's new drama hit The O.C. was not even a concept. Times change quickly. "Ch-Check It Out," the first single from the album will debut on the show Wednesday (April 28), the same day that the song breaks on radio. Fox expects a big crowd for The O.C. episode that night because the show features a bachelor party in Las Vegas that will give Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) and Seth (Adam Brody) more opportunities to get in trouble with the ladies.
Here is what a performer had to say:
It was the first big concert i saw since i started "the art of live performing".
EVERYTHING was just EXACTLY like you say. i simply couldn't believe it. it almost made me cry...
i have to tell you though you know it all:
the show started with the biggest opening in history, you know all that kind of soundscaping stuff, the computer type of countdown voice, the biggest string section ever, all the AMAZING LIGHT!!! It was wonderful, i started to understand what REAL LIGHTING means. All these beautiful moving lights...all that blue and white, all that audience blinding flashes. The singer (she was RED HOT) changed her costume 5(!) times during the show. (took her only 1 1/2 minutes to change though, amazing).
The Sound engineer? Oh my god, i could go on forever. I couldn't believe it when i saw that guy. it was almost a show itself to watch him! he was so silent and knowing (all faders to unity), didn't drink a single beer. didn't smoke) he moved so beautifully slow, just knowing EXACTLY what he was doing, fading in delays, fx,...doing it all so silently and strong, without all these busy "IM SOOOO DAMN IMPORTANT" looks and movements.
And the PA? EAW of course. I got EAW for my show! as you said: industry standard!
The talking of the singer? She didn't say a SINGLE word that wasn't rehearsed to death.
The support acts? The two support acts where talking all the time, just saying stupid things, trying to be funny, talking fast and such a nonsense...terrible. Also the support acts announced their merchandising themselves going: "well...ahhm...we got a bunch of CD's and photos out there and you can meet us after the show if you like...bye." one of the support acts even helped the stage crew with the equipment...horrible.
The main act? did she announce her merchandising? Certainly NOT a single word about it.
And you know what? The end of the show... I truly COULDN'T BELIEVE it.
I thought by myself: "how lucky am I to know about all of these secrets"
You know what happened? Of course you know :-) The ballad. The last chorus. The "non moving immortal gesture" at the end (10 secs), and then the lead guitar set in, playing the hook. DEC, I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT.What happened then? She did all the hand shaking, all that smiling, (biiiig smile) and when the band finished she went upstairs and WHAT DID SHE SAY???? WHAT DID SHE SAY???
I WAS FLASHED. Seriously. Of course she said: "Emsdetten" (that's where the concert was),
"Emsdetten, I LOVE YOU!"
BLACKOUT.
WAS THAT AMAZING? WAS THAT AMAZING? I WAS TOTALLY FLASHED by that whole show. She did EVERYTHING you say in your teachings, it was like the perfect example and the most important part of it: It WORKED.
Merchandising? The guy was literally YELLING at everybody to buy. And did he sell? Holy sh**...
Just wanted you to know that tonight, even the slightest bit of doubt about what i learn from you disappeared forever. Tonight I got the ultimate proof that there is a sure way to make it in this wonderful business. You teach this "sure way" and that's why things ARE gonna work out for me.
Let me give you the biggest thank you in history. Once again: It was so mega-amazing, thank you ever so much.
all the best

"Hi Dec!
I remember you once mentioned about being able to get more than 16 different tracks from 16 midi channels. Please let me know how this is done. I`ve got on the New Deal for Musicians scheme recently. I had an amazing meeting with a Music Industry Consultant by the name of Ron Atkinson last week. He started off in the 1970`s working with Chris Blackwell at Island records, then RCA and ZTT.I used all the techniques you`ve taught me,and on his way out, He said: "I see a great many people, but I`ll remember you!"I`m meeting with one of his team this coming week to discuss getting a grant for studio equipment. Thanks,as ever Dec. Your influence is felt more than you can imagine!
Kind regards, T** S*****
Modern day Pro Tools and Logic approach the Midi limitations in a different way. Because all the sounds are generated internally then there is little chance of being embarrassed from lack of Midi channels....if you run out - you simply live bounce onto an audio channel. Most midi sequencer programmes have a basic 16 midi channels. The Atari [and most other music sequencers] can accept a multiplying unit. Whenever I have to use an Atari I use a simple plug in into the back of the computer with a midi socket out, which effectively gives me another 16 - so that gives me 32 channels as 16 No. A channel and 16 No. B channels.
With a 'Unitor' plug-in this will increase to A,B,C,D, so effectively you get 64 channels...more than enough for anyone. It merely plugs into the 'midi out' of the computer and the box has four midi out sockets on. Don't confuse this with a normal 'midi splitter' which merely has one in, 8 out of the same 'A' midi signal. Or a 'midi merge' which allows two in and quite a few out.
The main benefit of the B channels is that you can assign lots of samples from, say an Akai sampler, and you have tremendous control and flexibility. I normally run all my drums, percussion on B10 and then all the extra percussion, extra kiks and snares etc. plus other samples on the other 15 'B' channels....very easy and very flexible. There is always an argument in favour of any particular way of approaching Midi and PC/Mac recording. I don't get into the argument. I simply do things my way, the way I know makes money.....but I have the equipment and the knowledge to use any of the other ways....easy really. Knowledge is key.
I hope this helps

A woman brought a very limp duck into a
veterinary center. As she lay her pet on the table, the doctor pulled out his
stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet
shook his head sadly and said, "I'm so sorry, Cuddles has passed
away."
The distressed owner wailed, "Are you
sure?"
"Yes, I am sure. The duck is dead," he
replied.
"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean, you
haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or
something."
The vet sighed, turned around, and left the room. He
returned a few moments later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's
owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws
on the examination table, and sniffed the duck from top to
bottom.
He then looked at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The
vet patted the dog, walked it out, and returned a few moments later with a
beautiful cat. The cat jumped up on the table and also sniffed delicately at the
bird. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and
strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the woman and said,
"I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead
duck." Then he turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys, and produced a
bill which he handed to the woman. The duck's owner, still in shock, took the
bill.
"$150!", she cried. "$150 just to tell me my duck is
dead?"
The vet shrugged. "I'm sorry. If you'd taken my word for it,
the bill would have been $20, but what with the lab report and the cat
scan....."
