Do You Really Want Music Success? [you would be surprised how many don't]

Strangely I have been listening a lot in the past weeks about how different guys in different businesses have success.  The music business is no different- you actually have to WANT success.  Strange?  Nope!  I did a Demo consultation [ www.makehits.co.uk/demo.htm ] the other day and not only did the guy say that he definitely did not want a record deal but he definitely did not want any recognition or success in any shape or form.

Strange?  He is an excellent writer, by the way.  I was able to give him excellent 'ways forward'... he will make lots of dosh from his music.

The amount of dosh you make in this business is the only precise indicator of the success you have.  Easy?  I think it is.  And so do all my music business pals.  So, I would suggest if you do not think in this way, today would be a good day to start?

You could start by advertising for no cost?  Check this out ... I have been with Bob for years:  Did you know that subscribers to Bob Osgoodby's Fr ee Ezine

50th Anniversary 1957 Stratocaster Guitar And Amp Set released [ For Vintage guitar fanatics? ]

Fifty years after the introduction of the iconic 1957 Fender Stratocaster guitar, Fender is honoured to welcome one of the original design pioneers, George Fullerton, back to the Fender family for the release of the Limited Edition George Fullerton 50th Anniversary Stratocaster guitar and amp set. The Fullerton set will be produced by the Fender Custom Shop in Limited Edition of only 150 globally and will include Master Built reproduction of a 1957 Stratocaster paired with a Relic Tweed Pro JuniorTM amplifier. The project was a creative collaboration between Mr. Fullerton and the Fender Custom Shop Master Builders that evokes the original spirit of devotion and craftsmanship that Fender was founded upon.

The resulting Limited Edition George Fullerton 50th Anniversary Stratocaster is a beautifully Master Built instrument with a two-colour sunburst lacquer finish on its three-piece blade-cut alder body. The one-piece '57-style soft V-shaped maple neck has a lacquer finish and 7.25"-radius maple fingerboard. The guitar include '50s-style pickups hand wound by world-renown expert Abigail Ybarra, who was hired to work for Fender by George Fullerton in 1956 and continues to work at the Fender Custom Shop today. The guitar also features a three-position pickup selector switch mounted on a single-ply white pickguard, plus vintage hardware, a commemorative neck plate and a certificate of authenticity signed by George Fullerton himself.

Digidesign with no fewer than three major product developments  [  New Pro Tools 7.4 ]

It has been a particularly busy end to the year for Digidesign with no fewer than three major product developments beginning to ship during the last few weeks. The triumvirate comprises the latest version of Pro Tools, the Eleven guitar amp emulation plug-in and the ICON D-Control ES worksurface, writes David Davies.

Digidesign has also launched its eagerly awaited Eleven guitar amp emulation plug-in for Pro Tools, Avid and Digidesign VENUE systems. The plug-in offers carefully selected emulations of modern amplifiers and speaker cabinets based on products from Vox, Fender, Marshall, Mesa/Boogie and Soldano. There are also several custom Digidesign creations inspired by some of the world's most celebrated amplifier designs.

"Our Eleven team really went the extra mile with this plug-in by including non-linear characteristics often overlooked in other amp-modelling solutions - things like power amp sag, speaker cone break-up, cabinet resonance and ghost notes," said Dusty DiMercurio, marketing manager for Eleven. "The result of this painstaking attention to detail delivers what we feel is the most incredible and realistic digital guitar amp emulations we've heard; it's something we're all very proud of here at Digidesign."

"Do sore thumbs really stick out?"

San Remo?  [One of the world's biggest song festivals]

Henry Mockford Emailed me:  "I think what you did was unique for that festival, anywaysand doubt if any other artist could repeat it"

One of our members, Henry, has had quite a success at The San Remo International Song Festival.  He surfed the Net to find out my band's success there.... two songs in the winner's finals?  Unbelievable.. ..

You may ask yourself are song festivals the way forward for your career in music?  My answer would be that it cannot do you any harm, we had a load of hits in Italy from San Remo .... just check out who was involved in the year my band did it ... The Hollies ... Cher .... Connie Francis ... Marianne Faithful ... Neil Diamond ... Bobby Goldsboro .... Gene Pitney ... Los Bravos .....  Legends ... and Super Stars at the time.  Google 'San Remo Festival 1967'.    None hit the winners list ... but my band won two in the top list!  We did very nicely in the charts for Italy after that Festival ... and the touring was good ... so Festivals work?

So, can I tell you how to be successful?  Hmmmmmm!

"Why is it when your almost dead your on deaths doorstep, but when your actually dead your not in deaths house?"

Radio ...   how to get played?  [the  mystery part explained

It might seem odd but program directors who are responsible for putting together the playlists that we want our songs to get on base part of their decisions on what is already getting airplay on the radio, TV and other broadcast mediums.  So do they feed off themselves .  Do they track airplay on radio to determine airplay on radio?  To some extent they do and that is why some songs stay on the Top 40 chart for a long time.  But new songs do enter the system in ways you might expect and in unusual ways as well.

How can a program director track the airplay of tens of thousands of radio stations and other broadcast media?  Well, as you might expect, it's all automated.  It is the Nielson Company [in the States, similar systems in UK] that is at the heart of the tracking process.  You probably know them from the Nielson ratings for television programs.  Nielson uses an automated system called Broadcast Data Systems.

BDS actually digitally scans the broadcasting of radio stations and music oriented TV stations (MTV, VH1, CMT, etc.) using pattern recognition.  So when your song enters the system, the record label submits the song to BDS to have it digitally tracked.  Then BDS can recognize the song each time it is played and keeps a record of how often your song is getting airplay.  And what if your song gets most of its play late at night?  Not to worry, BDS has its electronic ears to the airwaves every hour of the day, every day of the year.  Homeland security should be so efficient.

First of many thanks for the  delivery of the publishing course.

I am in the middle of writing my business plan at the moment,
and it is no exaggeration when I tell you that it has been invaluable.
The action letters are of course very useful, but having had some painful
experiences with 'legalities' in the past, in my opinion the legal agreements
alone are worth ten times the asking price of the course and that's a fact.

Anyone who says that they are serious and does not invest in this,
Well...

They just ain't serious.

Hi Dec,

Hope you are well ?!  I would very much appreciate your advice and wisdom about the following !

I sing regularly at an Arts Centre. They have an annual songwriters contest with a prize of 'one day's recording' in a local studio that sponsors them. The prize winner did not take up the offer so they have let me have the studio time instead which is great but, when I record there I will not have a receipt as it is a gift/prize.
Does that give the studio any rights over my recording and what I do with it ?
Do I still own the recording ?
Is there anything you advise me to do re protecting my work with this recording?
(All my songs are copyright and published by my own publishing company that I bought from you)

Thanks for your time

No part of this shall be deemed to be legal or accountancy advice within the meaning of any law of any land past, present or future.

Sorry for delay ... on tour [as is usual at this time of the year].

That is a very interesting scenario.  A judge in the High Court would have great fun with it.  And a court action would cost a fortune as both sides' solicitors and barristers would claim this was 'untested territory' with no precedent.

The basis of the law is this:

"Whoever pays for an item or service owns that item or service"

Following that through .... the person who won the competition owned the prize rightfully because he/she won it.  This could be viewed as the 'payment' for the day in a studio.  Therefore, if you record in the studio, the results of the recordings would be owned by him [the guy who won the prize].

However, you have been gifted this prize - so therefore you will be paying the studio with this prize, therefore, you will own the results of the day in the studio [in theory].

NOW.....

Picture your day in court ....

The judge will say to you "where is the written proof that you were gifted this prize and that the prize was then rightfully yours, giving you ownership of the results of this day in the studio?"

So......

In order to be full sure of your position, you MUST get the organisers of the competition to send you a simple letter stating that you are the rightful owner of the prize [a day in the studio and that any recordings resulting in that recording will be deemed to be the property of yourself].

I would suggest that you draft the letter and that they print it and sign it on their headed notepaper.  It is of the utmost importance that all this is completely signed sealed and delivered "before you switch the studio lights on".  It is far too late afterwards, when the row starts.

When the studio is presented with this document be prepared for them to turn a little nasty ... they will want to charge you for the CD master [which should be what is called a 'gold master' ...of much better quality than a normal CD] and for anything else they can.  They will stipulate the time period and could charge you for any extra time.

N***,, there is one thing to bear in mind.  A day in a studio is a very common prize.  No one ever achieves anything with a day in a studio.  The engineer is usually a trainee.  They couldn't give a monkey's about you or your music ... you are simply an inconvenience.

A single today takes approx. three weeks to complete.  So, one day achieves nothing.  I would treat it as a day to get as many vocal arrangements and one instrument demos of your material down on Disc in good quality.  If you are not too sure of your talents as a guitarist or single keyboard player it would make sense to hire a great player for the day....make sure you have all the music written correctly for him/her to play.

Oh, another thing ... the studio will work at a more than leisurely pace ... think that in the Sixties we completed 4 tracks with a full orchestra in 3 hours?

If you intend having a band with you, they will take three hours to get a drum sound, a few hours to get a guitar sound, then they will mess about getting the music together and at the end of the day you will get half an hour max to get your vocals down ... this happens EVERY time!

You are very clever to have all your material copyrighted and published.  Very clever indeed.  Check out www.makehits.co.uk/publishing.htm

I hope this helps.

Regards

The gags: .....      Willy again!   Women are clever; don't mess with them?

A married couple is driving along a highway doing a steady 40 miles per hour.  The wife is behind the wheel.   Her husband suddenly looks across at her and speaks in a clear voice.   "I know we've been married for twenty years, but I want a divorce."

The wife says nothing, keeps looking at the road ahead but slowly increases her speed to 45 mph.
The husband speaks again. "I don't want you to try and talk me out of it," he says, "because I've been having an affair with your best friend, and she's a far better lover than you are."

Again the wife stays quiet, but grips the steering wheel more tightly and slowly increases the speed to 55.
He pushes his luck. "I want the house," he says insistently..

Up to 60.
"I want the car, too," he continues...

65 mph.
"And," he says, "I'll have the bank accounts, all the credit cards and the boat!"

The car slowly starts veering towards a massive concrete bridge. This makes him nervous, so he asks her, "Isn't there anything you want?"

The wife at last replies in a quiet and controlled voice. "No, I've got everything I need," she says.   "Oh, really," he inquires, "so what have you got?"

Just before they slam into the wall at 65 mph, The wife turns to him and smiles.
"The airbag."

Moral of the Story :
Women are clever; don't mess with them!
