New Digidesign 003R released [It's hot!]

The Protools loaded Digidesign 002 was the bench mark for comparing all low/medium cost Computer recording systems.  Loaded with Pro Tools LE, and in the hands of dedicated knowledgeable music makers it was an awesome tool.  I have heard mighty results from this set up which were similar if not exactly the same as £600 an hour studios.

Now the 003R [R meaning rack mounted] is released and used with a Mac G5 is truly an awesome piece of kit.

The main benefits are the superb mic. inputs [8 of them] .... you can record 32 channels of audio simultaneously ... 256 midi tracks ... and a factory bundle of plug ins to die for.

The greatest benefit for me is that there are 8 individual audio outputs ... plus a dedicated main left/right output and a monitor left/right output ... monitor level control and two lots of earphone outs.  Lots of digital and optical outs and time clock out [to sync with other digital equipment].  So the eight outputs can go to individual channels on a 'proper' mixing desk and then you can use lots of outboard equipment.  I like to run all my midi gear 'live' when I mix so this system is perfect for me.

I do like the footswitch .... which is so useful when recording yourself ... no searching for the 'record' button on the screen.

My favourite recorder is my Roland Hard Disc recorder .... I have had many world wide releases with this ... I love the 6 individual audio outputs ... plus the main left right [which I only use when recording ... I use the individual outs for mixing.]  My set up has always been: Output 1: lead vocal, Output 2: additional ad lib vocals. Output 3/4 vocal arrangement in stereo.  Output 5/6 all the guitars in stereo.  So you can see that I can strap compressors over each channel and add loads of FX and enhancers.  Of course, I can also use the Roland 'on board' FX cards when bouncing [truly stunning 'on board' FX]

Tip of the Day: [ Get Extra Cache ]

If you have a good amount of available space on your hard drive and you surf the Internet all the time, you may want to consider increasing the size of your cache. By making your cache bigger, you will be able to access recently visited Web sites quicker.

If you're interested, open up Internet Explorer and go to Tools, Internet Options. Now click on the Settings button under the Temporary Internet Files area. You can then see where your cache is presently set, so to make the amount of disk space you want your cache to use larger, use the arrow slider to move it up.
When you are sliding, the little box to the right will tell you how much space you're using, in terms of MB. Once you have it set where you would like it, click OK twice.

So, if you ever want to decrease the space, follow the same directions to make it smaller. Also, if you would ever like to clear your cache out, go to Tools, Internet Options and click on the Delete Files button under Temporary Internet Files. Click OK and your cache history will be gone.

Remember that this tip is mostly for those of you who have some extra disk space and would like to access Web sites faster. If neither of those pertain to you, you may not want to even mess with your cache. That will be up to you.

Are Your Prices Too Low Your band? Your session playing?  Writing? ]

I want to talk about profit management and immediately make the point that the main motivating reason to be in whatever business you're in should be profit.

If it's not, you don't belong in business and the Music Industry is a business. Yet as a consultant I find all sorts of people in all types of businesses who are not primarily profit motivated. They've got their priorities mixed up. Business decisions made with something other than profit as the prime consideration are almost certain to be bad decisions.

One profit related issue is pricing and I find that most business people under price their products and services. It's my experience that price either isn't or doesn't have to be a very important factor in a consumer's decision or the success of a business.

Personally in fact, I like to be positioned at the high end of a price scale and have competitors focused on selling from the perspective of being cheaper instead of being better.

One of the most successful chiropractors I know is surrounded in his area by other doctors who charge $35.00 to $55.00 less per typical treatment. Yet his practice is bigger and more successful than any three of his close competitors added together.

In my experience that's not an exception that's a rule of business. Almost every time I consult with a business one of the very first things we do is raise prices or fees. Sometimes the adjustment is pretty dramatic.

In the speaking business one speaker I consulted with had himself so far under priced that we announced and implemented an immediate increase in his fees from $1200 to $3,500 a day. He was in trauma. But although a few grumbled he kept all of his existing clients and continued to add many more new ones.

Price is the laziest and riskiest advantage to market with. Getting customers with lower prices is relatively easy but keeping business obtained purely because of price is difficult. One way that most businesses can immediately increase profits is by increasing their prices. Most under price and wait too long to increase prices.

Hi Dec

Thanks for the pictures & I loved the tunes on your myspace.  You know from the right angle you look a bit like Shane Richey.

I did not know that Gareth Hunt had left us, must have missed the news that day.

Keep up the good work.  Best Regards

Subscriber's Section [ A publishing question ? ]

Hi Dec.

I have a situation where some titles of mine which were released in the Seventies are being re-released and I want to claim them for myself.

I used to be a member of PRS but was booted out because I didn't earn enough in royalities.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Our rules are "one short reply to ONE question FOR NON-MEMBERS, Members of 'The Serious Writers Guild' have unlimited personal access to Dec by direct telephone, Fax and Email , apply at https://secure.mistral.co.uk/makehits/swgappsecure.htm ".

Membership of PRS is purely related to "will PRS make money from you?" That is why they make the requirements so tough to join...they do not want their computers clogged up with thousands of non earning members.

You do not say whether this is a major release on a major label or a re-release of tracks that did not earn much dosh in the first place and are being re-released on a small independent. All these facts are relevant to whether the tracks are going to earn money. The 70's were a long time ago! 37 years????

The normal practise is to write to PRS giving the title, length of each track ... Whether music, music with lyrics or just voice [talking] ... Then the label name, catalogue number and release date. They would also want to know the writers of lyrics and music plus the Publishing company each track is assigned to .... Best to send a photocopy of assignment agreement.

Then call them and discuss the way forward. Give them an indication of how much will be earned from anticipated sales.

They, then will make a reasonable decision based on that information.

As regards claiming the material for yourself ... That would entail starting your own publishing company [ www.makehits.co.uk/publishing.htm ]. Provided there is no other publisher involved then you simply issue the assignment contract for each title...the contracts are on the CDrom that comes with our Publishing Manual plus everything you need to know about the technical side.  I am always on the end of the phone to advise you

Then Publishing membership of the PRS would depend, again, on the anticipation of making money!

The gags: .....    from  Willie  [  Best job in the world! ]

A guy walks into the local welfare office, marches straight up to the counter and says,
"Hi... You know, I just HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job."

The social worker behind the counter says, "Your timing is excellent.

We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a
chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful nymphomaniac daughter.
You'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he'll supply all of your
clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided.

You'll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You will have to satisfy her sexual urges.

You'll be provided a two-bedroom apartment above the garage.  The starting salary is $200,000 a year."

The guy, wide-eyed, says, "You're Bullshittin' me!"

The Social Worker says, "Yeah, well... You started it."
