Are you in the market for a new guitar pedal? [ Boy, am I impressed ]
I have to go to The Caribbean to perform a couple of concerts in a few weeks time [sorry, sold out!]. My main worry is always that I use a pretty sophisticated guitar amp. set up .... Marshall 4X12 powered by a Marshall JMP1, Valvestate 2000 rack amp and Digitech 256 effects plus a Behringer foot midi control to work the whole rig. Very heavy when flying 15 hours.
I have become cheesed off, over the years, that not one promoter ever gets my requirement right ... but now I have the answer.
After much research, and listening, I bought a Boss GT8, the latest effects processor foot pedal from Boss [from my friend Frank at BEM www.bem-music.com call him and mention Dec]. Boy, does it deliver! There are approx. 140 user adjustable preset patches and a similar number of fixed presets for those who do not wish to investigate the ultimate possibilities [I like to improve presets].
I has the dual COSM amp modelling system where you can have a choice of two amplifiers working or both together ... it works in true stereo. The beauty is I can set it up so that each bank gives me clean, crunch, overload and mighty overload plus assigned effects... so I have those at the touch of each of the four foot buttons .... then the control button allows me to throw in the other amp and give me mighty distort ... that entire facility is available on each of the banks .... so I touch a bank "up or down" and I get a different four clean, crunch etc. ... so easy!
And the amazing and thoughtful idea is that any sound can be adjusted in real time from the intelligently set out knobs and buttons on the pedal board ... then stored at another push of the store button ... total genius ... I am a convert! Just plug it into any amp, adjust the amp to flat and away you go ... you can also set it for D.I '[direct injection into a desk], small amp, combo amp, stack.
I shall be using it tomorrow night in concert ... I can't wait to see will it be as 'heavy' sounding as my normal Marshall 4X12 set up.
By the way, did I mention the swell pedal that changes to a wah-wah at the touch of a button? Or the weird 'intelligent' arpeggiator and strange noises patches ... brilliant and very usable ... not just for guitar shop demos.
This is the most user friendly, massively powerful piece of kit I have ever used .. I wish all gear was so well thought out. Well done Boss. Review at http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/guitar_effects/boss/gt-8/

With their integrity as a desk manufacturer waning Mackie enters the lightweight power amplifier category with their new FRS Series - the FRS-1300, FRS-1700, and the FRS-2800. FRS Series amplifiers combine Mackie’s Fast Recovery circuitry with a modern switching power supply for exceptional sound and performance in portable applications.
“In true Mackie fashion, the FRS Series amps combine clean power and performance in a lightweight design,” says Mackie product manager, Greg Young. “Fast Recovery means your sound stays clean, even when pushing them to their limits. These amps are perfect for the rig on-the-go, and give you more power for your dollar- so they won’t break your back or your wallet,” finished Young.
The FRS Series features Mackie’s Fast Recovery circuitry for clean, undistorted sound and the ultimate in punch and clarity—even at clipping. New high-current switching power supplies make them super-efficient and ultra-lightweight—perfect for portable PA rigs. “Built-like-a-tank” construction and Mackie reliability mean the FRS amps will withstand the rigors of the road, and perform flawlessly during gigs. More powerful and quieter than others in their price range, FRS Series amps satisfy even the most demanding systems.
The FRS Series include a high-resolution, 6 segment LED meter per channel, defeatable clip limiter, subsonic filter, and on-board protection circuitry (short, under-impedance, over-current and thermal).. The FRS Series includes 3 powerful models - the FRS-1300, FRS-1700 and FRS-2800 with rated output of 1300W, 1660W and 2800W respectively @ 4 Ohms bridged. The FRS Series have an MSRP of $519.99 for the FRS-1300, $649.99 for the FRS-1700 and $769.99 for the FRS-2800. The entire series will be available in February 2008 domestically and March 2008 internationally.
[
Dec says: I don't like the fact that the power ratings are quoted as @ 4
Ohms bridged .... why can't manufactures realise that customers and would be
customers want the power in an understandable rating .... "into 4
Ohms" is the usual Industry standard .. most rigs run into paired 8
ohm speakers ... which makes 4 ohms loading on the amp ]

Subscriber's Section [ Digidesign 002 or 003? ]
"Hello Dec, Thank you for your kind advice.
Anyway, my local music shop offers the last remaining digi 002's at price 799 euros and when comparing to digi 003 at price of 1399 I'd rather come to conclusion that those +2 outputs in digi 003 wouldn't serve price-quality aspect very well. I might be wrong though =)
It little bit stabbed my musical heart to hear your opinion of G5. Yes, the price difference is only 600 euros. Well, I can update this laptop RAM to 2 gigabytes which will boost it's performance quite a bit. I don't have that much experience of Macs, in fact none of my own... I've read though that this new Intel / Mac laptop I have in my hands right now would be twice as fast as the "NON-Intel G5" which was on stores just 1.5 years ago or so. To that extent, I came to conclusion that this machine would serve me well. I guess time will tell... I have additional 22" screen to enhance my studio environment.
In addition to soundcard I've planned to purchase music production toolkit within couple of weeks to boost my ProTools LE. If you have any other recommendations I'd be thrilled to hear those..
Thank you once again..
It would just be so nice to start working with your "How to make million..." -packet with the "right gear"
Regards,

No matter which computer you buy you will still want the more powerful, newer one! Two screens is a great idea and pretty standard in studios.
Just doing a quick search brings up :Apple Power Mac G5 (dual 2.7GHz) .... Which means two 2.7Gig engines working at the same time ... So you can do two tasks with a full 2.7Gig for each task simultaneously.
If the extra two outs don't bother you then go for the 002 ... It would bother me! You see, on board FX cards use up massive amounts of CPU [computer processing unit] power ... So you run out pretty quickly.
You have to learn very quickly how to use the busses [just like on an analogue mixing desk] very frugally [sparingly] .... Use, say the reverb plug-in on one bus available to all audio channels and say Bomb Factory compressor available on another bus etc. ... That way you should not run into loss of power problems.
Also learn to bounce down multi tracks of, say, vocals to two tracks [left right] to conserve power ........
Pro Tools, although it is the best, still has a lot of limitations. Particularly as regards plug-ins ... That is why the big studios use self powered plug ins [around £2,000 each] .... With the 8 outputs it enables you to send the audio from the Protools to 8 separate channels on a mixing desk to avail of all your outboard equipment which is vastly superior to the on board plug-ins. The reverb plug-in supplied with computer software is particularly cheap and nasty!
A lot of folk will argue against this logic ... But the HD [the professional studio Protools] set up is usually set in a way that the 24/36 outputs go straight into a mixing desk and all the channels can be treated individually.
<<<<<<<I've planned to purchase music production toolkit within couple of weeks to boost my ProTools LE>>>>>>>
Most shops offer the 'factory bundle' which includes Bomb Factory etc. Beware that a number of the plug ins offered are for limited trial only ... They supply an 'I lok' key to use them. The I lok is tricky to use and get right. Registering it sounds easy but it is not.
Also make ABSOLUTELY SURE that you get going straight away because the back-up on Pro Tools is only for 90 days! The manual is HUGE and not easy to use. The back up on Mac is better but make sure you iron out all the wrinkles quickly!
Hope this helps ... as a member of The Serious Writers Guild you can call me direct.

The gags: ..... [ makes a man squirm? ]
"A big Texan stopped at a local restaurant following a day roaming around in Mexico. While sipping his tequila, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful. He asked the waiter, "What is that you just served?"
The waiter replied, "Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are called Cojones de Toro, bull's testicles from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!"
The cowboy said, "What the heck, bring me an order."
The waiter replied, "I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bull fight each morning. If you come early and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy."
The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed his order, and that evening was served platter, he called to the waiter and said, the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, inspecting his "These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday."
The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, "Si, Senor. Sometimes the bull wins."
