What a thrill I had last night ... I went to meet some of my pals in London.  Who walked in?  Jim Marshall.  The man who invented 'loud'.  The man who created the guitar amp. sound for almost every major guitar player since the Sixties.  http://www.marshallamps.com/
 
Jim has been a pal for yonks and sadly had a minor stroke a little while ago ... after all he is 84....come on?
 
"So Jim what have you been up to?"  ... "Oh, just came back from Frankfurt [the biggest music show and exhibition in the world] ... signed 8,000 [yes eight thousand] photographs."  And this a man who had a stroke?
 
"But, come on Jim, you must be easing up in the office?" ... "yes, I go in at 8am now and finish at 3pm" .... does that tell you where he got his success?  He still opens every bit of mail addressed to his huge company.  Write him a letter...he will open it!  He used to arrive at his desk at 6.30am ... when I stayed with him we would get to bed at 5 ... honest!

Books for the library
 
I was asked to donate a collection of my books to The Grand Order of Water Rats library ... so I brought along a few to present.  But with Jim there I couldn't help but present him with a copy of '57 Secrets of a Hit Record" ... he made a major contribution to the Audio CD of the package telling the real story of his amps...the creation of the Marshall Stack and how he stitched the whole idea together.   Recorded at his home on one of my overnight stays....a little piddly poohed...at 4am in the morning...great stuff.
 
We went to The Hilton on Park Lane, London for dinner afterwards....just Jim, my brother and I and guitar legend Bert Weedon with Maggie, of course... who taught almost every major guitar player in the UK to play with his monster book: "Play in a Day" ... the largest selling guitar manual in history.

BMW again
 
I always advise anyone who will listen .. "you just have to own and drive a BMW"
 
Last night proved it yet again...at the Hilton, where did I park?  You guessed it....right outside the main entrance, with the concierge shifting the 'no parking' signs and looking after my car for the evening.... and caught in the freak blizzard which hit the South East of the UK at 3 am this morning....the BMW proved itself...in 2 feet of snow .... all the other cars were stuck... folk sleeping in their cars for the night.  What a blizzard...trees down across roads...chaos...what is going on with the weather?

Regarding your comments on noise from studio equipment, notably guitars.
 
Changing the cheap wire inside a guitar for this good quality shielded wire makes quite a bit of difference.

Rejection
 
People want to do business with people. If you're in selling your music, and can't stand "Rejection", you're in the wrong business. Trying to market something online, does not shelter you from this either.
 
People will contact you and not buy into your offer.
 
Worse yet, you don't even get any contacts. If this is happening, you might want to ask yourself why.  Many people will simply "quit" and write it off as a bad experience.  Those who succeed find out why.
 
The first axiom of marketing is that people want to do business with people.  If their only contact is with a page, that may or may not bear your name, they will most likely "click on by".  Ask yourself - would you do business with someone you never heard of, know nothing about, and have no way of contacting?
 
Letting people know about you is one of the strongest statements you can make about your business. If you give a short background on yourself, with appropriate contact information, they most likely will have the necessary confidence to proceed.  I have full contact information on my website, including a telephone number they can call in the event of a question or a problem.
 
Now you might think that giving your phone number to the world, is going to result in a lot of "bad things". Not true!  In our 11 years of doing business on the Internet, I have never had a "crank" call - never.  I post the hours that people can call, and receive very few calls outside of that time frame.  After hours, I turn on the answering machine and give them the hours I'm available.  I suggest a broadcast type of message which doesn't allow the caller to leave a message.
 
Another nice touch is to include your photo with your Bio information.  As they say, "it's always nice to put a face with a name". The more you can establish a personal bond with your potential buyer, the greater your chances of success.
 
Follow up to all the legitimate replies you receive to find out why they have reservations.  Just this process alone may swing them into your camp. Rejection is not always bad, and if you learn from your mistakes, it just may prove to be a positive factor.

The movie I have 1 and 1/2 songs in ("Confetti" - major British comedy distributed through Fox Searchlight is released on 5th May - you can see a trailer if you look it up on the web.)  The 2 songs will go on the compilation album, released through Sanctuary records.
 
I'm releasing my own album, "Play My Heart" on the 7th May to coincide with this and want to do it as "Dec-ly" as possible.  I know there are gaps in my knowledge of how to steer my way through the biz - particularly as I'm now getting to the stage of conversations with managers and record companies.  I would love your input.  I need your advice!!!

It has to be understood that the Internet is now the greatest archive in the world [outside traditional libraries].  So, many will warn that one has to be extremely careful what one posts anywhere on the Net.  We are. 

We only abide by the ASA [Advertising Standards Authority] tenets that anything written in the public domain should be plain, clear and not misleading.

That item should be recognised as an archive article dated and relevant to that time... You quote the date yourself, which you must have found easily. Therefore of interest to those researching that time  -  or simply interested in operating in that way [just as some folk like guitars dated 1964].

Apart from the date, usually, but not always, given on the visible web page, any page on our sites can be dated easily in the professional, accepted, industry standard way.  Simply click on 'view' ... Then 'source' and scroll to the end of the header shown by: </head> ... You then, on a professionally laid out page, get the exact details of the page... This is excellent information for historical purposes and realistically should be included on all throughout the Internet...sadly it isn't. 

I am a member of S.P.A.B. [Society for Preservation of Ancient Buildings] and we operate in the same way....any extension to a building should be easily datable.

We could go through each page and update it, or simply delete the pages as they become 'past their sell-by date', but from the historical sense we feel it is invaluable to have that historical content.  For instance, it amazes us to see the references to the size of the computers we used, and the results we got.

Absolutely.....

And you would be shocked at the number of top studios who still love Atari .... I do!  Our latest album is totally Atari ... I love it.  So stable, so accurate, easy to use and reliable.  For certain type of work it is far more convenient than the latest Pro Tools [which we also use.]  We use many programmes, each with it's own quirks and limitations.  In the varied work we do, we use whatever we feel is the most efficient for the job in hand.  I shall be using Sound Forge when I finish this bunch of Emails.

Don't know where you got that idea.  The theories, modus operandi are precisely and exactly the same ... save that VST type systems allow live recording.  Atari plus hard disc recording is much more powerful [our preferred system for multi vocal overdubs....far more efficient than any other]

It has to be understood that 95% of the music guys who get in touch with me are skint...stony broke.  So, I feel that it is tremendous news that I can show them a way of getting a powerful, working studio, up and running for peanuts.  Provided they can stand the jibes of their minted music friends with the all singing, all dancing home set-ups [usually with Zero success, by the way]

 As you quote, we are: "dedicated to giving you the very best at the very lowest cost"

It is also invaluable in teaching them the rudiments of a modern day, midi based studio.  Much like learning to drive in a clapped out mini rather than a Bentley Continental.  The driver ends up much more skilled.

I normally refuse to answer vitriolic comment as you have just made, but in this instance I will.  I will make an exception.

I have been working and making an awful lot of money in the Midi domain since 1984 when I first saw a Midi driven studio producing Hi-Energy Gay dance music in Hanley, West Midlands in UK.  It amazed me and I couldn't wait to get up and running with Midi equipment.

I never put myself out as an expert on the scientific workings of Midi but I understand and use Midi to it's fullest potential every day.

I do understand that it was never designed to work to the extremes we expect today ... That is about the only scientific element necessary to know when using it.

Finally, it is worth considering that you may be suffering from what I call 'brand name-i-tis'.  I run across this all the time, particularly in live situations.

Our concert rig and the sound produced from it shocks music guys who suffer from 'brand name-i-tis'.  They want to see D & B , Meyer, Nexo etc.

They can only look at the brand name and make judgement before the rig is fired up.  They don't understand that the rig is designed with 40 years of experience at the sharp end of recording and live music...it is also set up with that knowledge and run by a sound engineer who I consider to be one of the Top Three in the world .... The brand?  Practically irrelevant.  Although we do use the most respected brand name in power amps.  Massively powerful, by the way. 

You see, it's the mix and the created sound that counts... Not the brands.

So, would you be able to tell which finished music was created by Atari or by Sonar?  With the right producer in place, I doubt it very much.
