 have noticed that the CD which earned us our first Gold disc for Internet sales is titled 'Key To My Heart' .... a title which my brother wrote the main idea for, I cleaned up and arranged and was recorded at 125 Studios in Burgess Hill.

 

It is amazing how tracks happen?  By the way, I have loads of gold and platinum for normal records but this is the first Internet sales award.

 

Con arrived with a rough melody and words.  We were in the middle of finishing the recording of the album and mixing at the same time.  We had a production line system worked out where I was writing the arrangements onto computer, then recording the vocals, guitar and bass [which were live] and then Ian [the studio owner, engineer and now millionaire from library dance music] would start the mix and tweak it until I was ready to apply the 'fairy dust'.

 

Knowing that the track was urgent, I used an old and trusted trick which Ivor Raymonde had showed me ... he arranged for Dusty Springfield, Walker Brothers and hundreds of other Hit recording artists.  His son Nick Raymonde was recently head of RCA records [part of BMG].

 

The trick was to dream up a few stunning back lines which would bear repeating and repeating a lot.

 

Then, all that had to be done was get each individual section of the orchestra to play those figures on their own and in various combinations.  On manuscript you simply indicated the section you wanted repeated and wrote, for instance, 'col trumpets' ... that would mean that the copyist, who copied the notes from the score onto the individual parts for the musicians, would simply copy that section, transpose it into the instruments natural key [trumpet would be B flat]

 

On computer this was much easier.  I simply cut and paste the section onto the trumpet track and applied the trumpet sample to that track....easy?

 

As Con [my brother] was recording his lead voice, Ian started humming a great vocal repetitive back line ... I grabbed it immediately, cleaned it up and made it the basis of the entire song.

 

So, although I always say that it takes approx. 3 months to write, clean up, and perfect and record a hit song ... here was a track, delivered in rough state then cleaned up, perfected, arranged and recorded in about 6 hours!  And now a gold disc?

New Sennheiser sound logo competition [could be good?] 

 
Sennheiser is inviting musicians, composers, sound designers and creative minds to take part in a competition to produce a sound logo - defined by the company as "a short audio signature that will be instantly recognisable as the sound of Sennheiser". The sound logo could be a mini-melody, a compact sequence of notes, a chord or a mix of noises and notes, but should be instantly memorable and "embody the same qualities as Sennheiser products", reports PSN-e.
 
Those wishing to make a submission have until July 17th to enter. Each entrant can upload a maximum of five tracks in MP3 format (stereo, 128, 198 or 256kb/s; maximum 10MB) onto the dedicated website (link below). There is no optimum length for a sound logo, although audio tracks should not be any longer than eight seconds.
 
Thirty finalists will be chosen from the submissions during August, with these tracks then placed before the public in an online vote as well as an international jury, the latter including Professor Jorg Sennheiser and Jon Thornton (Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts).
 
The winner - to be announced at the beginning of September - will receive a prize of 5,000 euros and any applicable VAT, plus an optional 30,000 euros should Sennheiser choose to acquire the unlimited global user rights to the sound logo. Nine runners-up will be able to choose between Sennheiser HD 650 headphones and the G2 evolution wireless Set 300.

A complex question this. 

 

Let me start by saying that there are many 'compilation' CD systems out there.  Many in the country genre and now I see this one in the Christian genre.  John Waterman of Bandit tried one last year  and the year before ... I am not sure it was the success he anticipated. He reported to me that the contributors got 10%-15% hit rate in having the tracks picked up for recording.  His number is +44 (1)1983 524110

 

For a start it is easy for a compilation company to send to 300+ radio stations, just as it would be easy for you, yourself, to send to 300+ radio stations ... it is simply a database acquiring and a packing and posting exercise.  It is by no means a way to writing and recording success.  Radio stations get hundreds of these type mailings, possibly each week. 

 

As a radio presenter friend of mine said to me: "why do they send them?  Don't they know that almost every radio station used a computer based play list friendly choice software?"  Meaning that stations use an automatic software programme that makes up the programmes with smooth flowing music lists.  Rock, Pop, Country, Gold etc.  The days of 'hands on' producer chosen music are well gone.  It is a chore to handle the CD's then catalogue the writing and publisher details and hand send them to PPL/PRS alliance for royalty distribution.  'Radioman' and such software does all the barcode collection automatically and informs PPL/PRS automatically.

Sending to a radio station, in my opinion, is a fruitless exercise.  And my opinion is shared by many radio DJ's and producers.  The only exception would be the Ross Kwame type programmes that specialise in new talent ... as did the late John Peel. 

 

I note that you had the toon demoed by ISA.  An excellent company run by a friend of mine in Limerick, Ireland.  They make excellent clean and purposeful demos.

HOWEVER,  

 

These demos are done to a price.  I would not switch my studio lights on for the price they charge for a CD.  I simply do not understand how they can make a profit!

Having said that, of necessity, they are done quickly with little thought to what is currently in the chart.  Any demo that is going to make money MUST sit comfortably between the Number One and Number Three this week.  It must be a Smash Hit in the first ten seconds.  It must have vocal arrangement to die for, an instantly memorable repetitive chorus that the girls can scream on a drunken Saturday night out.  It MUST be dancible, exciting, performed by the band from Heaven [music success is 80% visual and 20% music].  The band/artist must be fancied by every 12 year old in the land. 

 

Lastly, Christian music in this country [UK] has never had lasting and constant success.  The last major hit was Shackles and that was a few years ago.  Possibly The Fray with 'How To Save a Life' but that did not sound like UK Christian Music..  The USA is a different ballgame.  Mainly because they understand what a Hit song is and tailor the Christian song to sound and feel like a normal Top Three record.  In this country, sadly they are locked into the acoustic guitars, flutes and a violin, with a singer with no b*lls [sorry, but that is the truth according to the record companies]. 

 

Given that there are so many devoted Christians in the UK, it is amazing that the music makers do not cater for them ... or reversing the situation, it is amazing that the Christians record buyers do not support the music makers - but then I feel that they demand raunchy, gutsy Christian music and simply are not offered it.

Finally, finally, may I suggest two things:
