I found it

Any of you guys out there who are familiar with my books and programmes will know that I always emphasise the importance of complete preparation for any venture.  In other words, study and rehearsal, even a school exam.... if you are prepared enough, then the exam is simply like a game of tennis....there to be played and enjoyed.  That is the attitude I was lucky enough to have right through school....drummed into me by some greater 'forward thinking' teachers.

When I jumped headlong into music I had the same attitude....I rehearsed my band to death!

The Show Business example I always give is Fred Astaire... the ancient song and dance man in the old musical films.  He rehearsed and rehearsed until the routine was second nature...a doddle...something to be enjoyed.  The word would go round the film lot that "Fred is doing it today" ... that is to say: shooting the dance scene that he had rehearsed for probably 5 weeks non-stop.  The lot would be full to overflowing that day....everyone wanted to see Fred do it....of course very few were allowed onto the set....but those who did saw him shoot the entire routine ...ONCE .... and with just one camera.

I have found a full clip of a Fred Astaire routine and I would suggest you look at it and marvel.  There is just one change of camera, and that is because there was a total change of tempo and in those days of very basic equipment it would have been impossible to link the two separate pieces of orchestral music precisely.

Enjoy.... www.makehits.com/tapdancing.wmv  .  Does that change your attitude toward 'perfection'?  Toward what is required?  Toward what will make you a music success?

The Web Audio is a Wow!

You will probably have had a short Email from me during the week telling of the new software I found  to have your own sound, toons etc. on your site.  I have had audio on some of our sites for quite a while...but.....

The problem was the slow loading time and the difficulty with quality....now all those problems are gone.  This software gives instant streaming and you can choose the quality - all the way up to .MP3 or .WAV.  It's brilliant and so cheap.  No monthly dosh to hand over to some hosting company....you control it yourself.

We have added it to our sites....check out www.makehits.com to hear it working.

It even comes with a easy video tutorial and it cost us less that any other tool on the market. It took us five minutes to record it and post it on our sites....quite amazing.   You can use your own gear to record it...so the quality is up to you.

To get the same system just go to https://paydotcom.com/r/2751/makehits/185070/ .... you will be shocked at how cheap it is and how easy it is to use. You can now have your own toons and your own talking voice right on your web page .... with no fees! Much better than posting your music on those silly sites with thousands of others.

"Right now, as you read this, 17 Million people are having SEX!!! And look at you - you're on the computer!!!!" -

A  new scam?

If you are selling music or other items from your web site and accept Paypal, be aware of this latest scam.

The guy pays you by Paypal....immediately demands a refund for no reason.  Most businesses [like ours] operate a total no quibble guarantee.  You send a cheque to the guy ... the second he gets your cheque he asks Paypal for a refund....they will immediately give back the money....'cos that is what they guarantee....they will return any money with no reason given....good eh?  He makes 100% profit on a simple investment and gets to see/read/listen to/record the goods for Zilch!

We have seen it once.  In talking to other Web based music organisations the answer is to always return Paypal money through the Paypal system...simple?

Easy Shut Down  -  Have you ever found yourself wishing that Windows wouldn't ask you if you really want to shut down after you've gone to all the trouble of hitting the Start button, then Shut Down?

XP Users:

1. Right click the Desktop and select New/Shortcut

2. A screen will appear asking you for a Command Line.

Here's what you put in that box:

For Shutdown: Shutdown -s -t 0

For Restart: Shutdown -r -t 0

For Log Off: Shutdown -l -t 0

After you've decided which of the above options to use, click the Next button and give the shortcut an appropriate name. Now that you have the nifty little shutdown shortcut on your desktop, you may want to drag it to your taskbar for easier access (and less chance of an accidental click).

Dear Dec

I know you like the follow the follow up stories from people who use your materials/listen to your advice!

I’ve just heard that one of my songs ‘Keeping The Dream Alive’ is being released on an album by Kay Ray in Germany       www.kayray.de

He (yes I did say he)    is a top national comedian/singer/cabaret artist in Germany and the album ‘Emerge’ will be in the shops in Germany at the end of March.   The album has been well produced …especially my track!!  With the current exposure Kay is getting on national tv over there I think the album will do well … it will be exciting to watch how it sells.

Here is a question re  vocal harmonies

Hi  Dec

As a member of your Guild, I'd like to ask you a question about back vocal doubling.

If, for example, the lead vocal melody in the chorus spans several different notes accompanied by different chords and you decide to add 3 different part back vocals, what is better practice: to change tonality for all three parts simultaneous while they follow main vocal, or to hold same tones in regards to the main vocal until chord changes to new one.

thank you in advance

D ******

My Reply:

Hi  D ******

A very intelligent question.

Both work..... but you cannot just change all notes without regard to the chord structure.  Sometimes you can change one ... this would then be called a 'passing note'.

But it depends on the producer's intentions.  He may want a close harmony feel [that is what we call harmony that follows the melody as closely as possible within the constraints of the chord structure].  I developed a unique sound for my band by doing this with one voice above the melody and one voice below.  It was never done before, strangely, and was quickly nicked by The Hollies, The Searchers, The Fortunes, The Four Preps...and loads more....but we were first!

That type of harmony needs a very distinctive and strong, obvious, lead voice ... as it is surrounded by harmony and not easy to identify in the finished sound.

The other way you describe is called 'block harmony' .... where the lead voice is distinct from the Back Vocals and the B/V's simply sing a block of harmony, changing with the chord structure and using the words and metre of the lyric.

This harmony would work equally as an 'AAAh' or a hum.  When we sing an AAh or OOH we still follow the melody, using the note above and note below technique....this will give a 'fifth' interval' sound to the back vocal...which can be very full and interesting.  Fifths, tenths and thirteenth's will always give off the harmonics of the missing harmony notes, even in vocals [try a tenth on an acoustic piano to check this out....doesn't work on electronic keyboards as they do not produce natural stringed sound]

An interesting way to use block harmony is by using a combination of both methods.  Have the melody sing in octaves and have the two harmony notes in between as block harmony.  This gives a sound which was much used by jazz singing groups [Singers Unlimited... etc].  The melody will sometimes come within a single tone of the harmony and this gives the sound....try it on piano ... you will immediately recognise the unique sound [used a lot by George Shearing as his distinctive sound]

The gags: .....    Try this one at the office?

A couple of old guys were golfing one day, when one of the men said that he was going to go to Dr. Bander for a new set of dentures in the  morning.

His elderly friend remarked that he, too, had gone to the same dentist a few years before.

"Is that so?" the first old gentleman asked. "Did he do a good job?"

The second gent replied, "Well, I was on the golf course yesterday when the fellow on the ninth hole hooked a shot. The ball must have been going at least 200 mph when it smacked me right in the testicles."

The first old guy was confused and asked, "What does that have to do with your dentures?"

The second man answered, "That was the first time in two years that my teeth didn't hurt."
