How do I have successful websites?
Ah, the question I get asked all the time. And my answer is the same as 'How do you become successful in the music game?'. You simply have to study and learn, be prepared to put in the 16 hour days ... there is no one out there who can do it for you...you just have to learn the stuff yourself. Have you any idea the amount of reading and studying I do?
So I have been asked by many music site owning guys to 'spill the beans'. So I said I would. I won't go too deep or take up too much time each week ... but I propose to give one great tip each week. Follow them, if you have your own web site and watch your Search Engine ratings go through the roof. But you have to do it!
The first Search Engine Optimisation tip:
First let me explain that the search engines take the 'on page' optimisation and the 'off page' optimisation' equally seriously. In fact the 'off page' stuff is even more important.

Charts:

(1) We Belong Together, Mariah Carey
(2)
Shake It Off, Mariah Carey
(3) Don't
Cha, The Pussycat Dolls Featuring Busta Rhymes
UK
3) Daniel Powter - 'Bad Day'
Download Chart [now the most important chart in the UK]Is there something going on with 'Oasis' in the UK chart...only lasted a brief week in the Top Three?
The USA chart and the UK download chart stay precisely the same .... Mariah must be whooping it up with joy.
Just as the last Gorillaz single 'Feel Good Inc' dips out of the Top 40 after an epic 20 week run [Hello! I had one in the chart for 19 weeks....b*m he just beat me], the second single from 'Demon Days' storms the chart and beats the peak of its predecessor to give the virtual band their first ever Number One hit.
To say that people love the single is something of an understatement. 'Dare' surely has to go down as the most universally praised single of the year, just about every review you read showering it with praise in one form or another. Central to its attraction is the presence of a certain Shaun William Ryder on guest vocals, the former Happy Mondays frontman landing his first chart hit for some time and inadvertently winding up with his biggest ever.

A difficult choice ... being taken for a ride or not?
Hi Dec!
Iīm playing keyboards in a band of a guy here in Germany who is signed to a label of W***** M****. 2 Singles will be released with an album option. He also has a major rule in a German teenie TV show, he will get Bravo Support and the singles will be TV advertised because the label is a cooperation between W***** and P*** (a German TV Channel). So thereīs a lot of marketing commitment.
He loves my keyboard playing and asked me to play some parts for the second single. I told him that would cost a regular fee...but he didnīt accept this deal and wants me to do it for nada.
The toon is a hit, thatīs for sure...so what would you do?? I mean, itīs a hit...
Regards ... F**
My Reply: [This must not be construed as legal advice by the laws of any country either now or in the future]
F**This is a difficult choice and yet not a difficult choice.
The guy is 'taking the rip' ... in other words, taking advantage of the fact that you love to be involved with music and particularly involved with the recording process...especially if there is a chance of a 'hit'.
He should pay, even if it is a token ... at least pay expenses. The guy is a 'pleb' ... not worth being involved with. You gave a 'sample for Zilch ' ... that is enough to prove your worth.
I personally make sure to pay for everything ... every guy who works for me always gets paid IMMEDIATELY.
Make careful notes of the session times and whether he asks you to 'dream up a great phrase' or 'invent a solo'. This constitutes being asked to 'compose'. Should the record become a huge hit, then you have a rightful claim as a part composer .... especially if you have all the details written down ... and preferably recorded on a mini tape machine as you are asked to 'compose'.
A discreet mini tape machine recording works wonders in court.
So, even if you do it for nothing [which you shouldn't] always be aware that you, as a contracted musician, are entitled to PPL [Phonographic Performance Limited] and VPL [Video Performance Limited] royalties every time the recorded toon is played in public .... Radio, TV, Pub sound system...whatever.
It is essential to inform PPL and VPL of your involvement with session times, release date, catalogue number. You MUST register your involvement.
The principal artist does not pay this royalty ...it is paid direct from PPL and VPL. He probably does not even know the royalty exists!
So, if the record is a Hit you get lots of royalties...and if you can prove you 'composed' part of it ... they will settle out of court and you get even more money.

The gags: [are you Jewish?]
Three men were sitting around bragging about how they had given
their new
wives duties.
The first man had married a
Catholic woman, and bragged that he had told
his wife she was to do all the dishes and keep the house spotless. He said it
took a couple days, but on the third day he came home to a clean house and
the dishes were all washed and put away.
The second man had married a
Mormon woman. He bragged that he had given
his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, the dishes and the cooking.
The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day was better. By the
third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done, and he had a huge
dinner on the table.
The third man had married a
Jewish girl. He boasted that he told her that
her duties were to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry
done and hot meals on the table, every day. He said the first day he didn't
see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day
most of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left
eye.
