Dec caught on camera - Don't Make This Mistake

I  always advise members of The Serious Writers Guild to pay much attention to preparation.  In fact I tell everyone who asks about success on stage and in the studio to prepare and prepare well.

The secret of SAS success in the battlefield and on covert operations is their ability to spend all their waiting time preparing   Their motto is: "test, test and test again".

You would think at my stage of the game I would have this off to a 'T'?  Yeah?  Nope!  Even I get caught out.

Back to The Congress Show:

When Bruce Welch asked me to play the Hank Marvin part in his presentation of his legendary Shadows' hit 'Apache', I set up a rehearsal schedule.  Strangely I have always considered the Shaows stuff to be so easy to play ... simple stuff.  don't you believe it.  It sounds simple but demands great accuracy and skill to play simplistically.  I left a guitar on a stand in my studio with a back track set up in the CD player ready to go.  Anytime I walked in the studio or had a few minutes waiting for the computer to finish a task I picked up the guitar and rehearsed.  As I got nearer the date of the show I looked for more accuracy...using the '3 times in succession' method which I give to Serious Writers Guild members....a sure-fire way to perfect accuracy....given to me by a world class concert pianist when I was learning piano at age 8.

[I have heard it said that all my knowledge is in these 'One Minutes' so there is no need to be a member of The Serious Writers Guild'...well, let me tell you that this one trick is worth the whole price of the ten month program 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music'... and you will never see it in 'One Minute']

So Okay, I had 'Apache' rehearsed to a stage I could just concentrate on putting 'fairy dust' on the performance...I had the precise Hank Marvin triple echo plus reverb set up on my Marshall JMP1 plus my Digitech 286 FX unit....it was perfect....checked it all out at the concert we did the night before...hey it was good.

Came the night ..... onstage with Bruce ....the rest of The Bruvvers [Joe Brown's backing band] were great ... we blasted into 'Apache' with to wild applause ....just as we got to the stunning bit where we all pushing the guitars up to the sky a la 'Shadows' my strap fell off....embarrassment?  You bet!  It had happened once while rehearsing and I thought I'll fish out one of those gismos that holds the strap on firm ...did I do it?  Did I heck!

So it's all caught on camera...check out www.makehits.com/oneminarchive070805.htm  My right hand desperately trying to find the end of the strap!

   Caught on Camera

My pals are still ribbing me about that night ... so test, test, test ....Be Prepared.

More than one way of skinning a cat?

It stuns me to hear of members of The Serious Writers Guild who suddenly shoot off in a different direction, still using all the knowledge they have gained...they find success and a lot of Dosh in quite a different side of the music game....just listen to this...by the way, for those who don't know, The Edinburgh Festival is the largest Show Business festival in the world:

"I'm doing well at the moment.  Last night was my opening night at the Edinburgh Fringe as SuperElvis. www.superelvis.co.uk

I had to rely on my comedy and not my music. The audience were wetting themselves! I got handed a Lemon, I had to make Lemonade.

I now realise that's it ok to take risks, that I should be original and not stick to the safe formula of mediocrity.

I see myself first as a singer/songwriter, but my mind is open enough to accept any success that my comedy may bring and at the moment that seems to be quite a lot.   It's a big adventure, thanks for opening the door.

It reminds me that I had a stunning education, then read Civil Engineering, then turned sharp right into Show Business as a career.  So, learning and studying, almost in any field helps when you eventually find your own 'niche'.

New section - the visual laugh  - got a lot of flack from the ladies last week:

We all like a laugh, so each week I will give you a 'visual' laugh, just mouseclick on the link [don't forget to come back?].  Some of the ladies [were they feminists?] had a tilt at me last week over the 'men's rules' .. but I try to balance it out ... some men jokes ... some ladies jokes.

This week you have to understand the current trend in the UK toward looking and acting in a totally irresponsible way...Chavs.... or 2nd and 3rd generation drop-outs.

You will need  Power Point program or Windows Media Player for these visuals...should be on your computer. Don't forget to hit Alt and Return to make the picture full size.

"Hi Dec

One of the first things I did was completely change the band and as a result we did a fantastically successful tour in Europe. I changed my guitar rig on that tour to using the Marshall JMP1.

Just did a festival gig in front of 3000 people. We now have a top slot at the Colne Rhythm & Blues Festival on Aug 27.
We also have another tour planned in January in Europe.

So....I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your work and advice and I hope I will be able to keep the good news coming!

Thanks,

Keith Thompson"

Chart Comment:

I don't believe it!

For the first time ever all three charts remain the same since last week.  That is the norm in The State.s....but hardly ever in the UK...where artists and material tend to be Record Company fodder.

Having said that...all the records are great .... a lot of controversy over Charlotte Church, but she gets full marks in my book for keeping the publicity machine grinding away...hardly a day with her in the papers, magazines and on Telly ....way to go?

Ever since James Blunt ascended to the top of the singles chart, the Top 10 has experienced its slowest level of turnover for decades featuring just 2, 3, 2 and this week 3 new entries only. Compare this with the increasing number of incidences of 5, 6 or even 7 new entries inside the Top 10 in a single week. Just a year ago we were speculating how long it would be before we saw a Top 10 made up entirely of new entries. Instead the chart trend is suddenly heading in the opposite direction.

A sage warning!  Read on.......

Dec, something wild is going on. After reading the first course packs for the second time, out of the blue, musical projects are popping up and I'm not officially back in the music business until I've finished your course, right?

Do you recall Sharon Musgrave? She was the vocalist on No.1 hit Fascinating Rhythm by Bassomatic many moons ago. She 'demoed' about ten songs for me in mid 90s. She now lives in Canada and her career is bubbling along.  I just got some royalties from one of our tracks which she got on various radio stations.  She wants me to do something with the masters that I'm holding.  What do I do?  I smell money but how do I convert the situation into the real thing?

My Reply:

Sorry for delay...overseas.

I am very much on record as saying that there is never a point in 'revisiting' old songs that 'missed the boat' in the first place.

However, if the tracks have chart success behind them then the goalposts change considerably.

There is a huge dance / hip hop/ R&B market out there clamouring for good 'proven' hooks to create new material for the today chart.

However be aware that it is a part of the business that is ridiculously skill orientated.....you don't pick up those skills in a few months or just by buying the latest mixing gear.  You will learn a lot with me but you may need outside help in physically producing the stuff ready for the chart..

I can put you in touch with top [and I do mean top] producers.

The gags:  [dating in 1957 - for those who remember and for those who don't remember.   This humour is a shade of grey - but not what you may think at first.]

It's the summer of 1957 and Harold goes to pick up his date, Peggy
Sue.

Harold's a pretty hip guy with his own car and a duck tail hairdo.
When he goes to the front door, Peggy Sue's mother answers and invites
him in. "Peggy Sue's not ready yet, she says, "so why don't you have a
seat?"

Peggy Sue's mother asks Harold what they're planning to do.

Harold replies politely that they will probably just go to the
malt shop or to a drive-in movie.

Peggy Sue's mother responds, "Why don't you kids go out and screw?
I hear all the kids are doing it."

Naturally this comes as quite a surprise to Harold and he says
"Wha... Whaaat?"

"Yeah," says Peggy Sue's mother, "We know Peggy Sue really likes
to screw; why, she'd screw all night if we let her!"

Harold's eyes light up and he smiles from ear to ear. Immediately,
he has revised the plans for the evening. A few minutes later, Peggy
Sue comes downstairs in her little poodle skirt with her saddle shoes,
and announces that she's ready to go.

Almost breathless with anticipation, Harold escorts his date out
the front door while Mom is saying, "Have a good evening kids," with a
small wink for Harold.

About 20 minutes later, a thoroughly dishevelled Peggy Sue rushes
back into the house, slams the door behind her and screams at her
mother,

"Dammit, Mom!  The Twist!  The Twist!  It's called The Twist!
