Beware EBay problems

EBay has revolutionised the way we buy [and sell] musical equipment - and a lot more.

I decided recently to upgrade a few bits and pieces in my studio.  My son is a very active member of EBay and I decided to get involved.  Years ago I picked up some interesting bits and pieces, but found I had bought stuff which I never actually got around to using.  This  time it was going to be different.  I knew exactly what I wanted and I searched for the items.

A couple of points here....

As usual, I applied a good analytical brain to the occasion. A few surprising facts came out of this.

Is it cheaper on EBay?

Hmmmmm!  One particular item I wanted [Industry standard] has evolved over the past couple of years and the manufacturers have realised that not everyone will pay the full huge price tag for their keyboard.  so they have released a cut down version.  Guess what?  When you ask the seller on EBay which version it is they are selling or what the spec. is they miraculously do not know.  One guy even said: "I can't remember why I bought it in the first place".  Very odd.  The top of the range version is around UK£1,700 and the cut down version around UK£800....and he can't remember?

You need a good reference site.

Strangely, we have one of the best mail order/web based music stores on the Web based here in Eastbourne.  Now I would rarely go near the shop [only in emergencies] as they are extremely 'off hand' in dealing with customers, but the Web site is marvellous.  http://www.bonnersmusic.co.uk

Excellent for comparing prices.

Here is the real story:

I always advise music guys to get registered for VAT [Value Added Tax...Sales Tax in the States].  For this reason.  One item I was after worked out like this:

Final bid price on EBay:  UKP650 plus UKP40 post and packing.... total UKP690.....no warranty.....second-hand!
Best price from Bonners:  UKP846 less VAT ... total UKP 720 .... full warranty ... brand new!

Difference is UKP30 .... crazy!  You save 30 but you lose the warranty and you really don't know what the product is going to look like or operate ... sold as seen! [in a photograph]

I do notice that a lot of items are withdrawn suddenly with no reason given.  This suggests that there are a lot of dodgy sellers and EBay catch up with them and withdraw the items.

There is a much worse problem:

On two occasions when I missed out on an item, I very quickly received an Email through the EBay 'member to member' Email service [so it looked absolutely genuine].  These said that....I quote:

Dear makehits, ***Do not reply to this email . Contact the seller at this e-mail address : dacyoc@aol.com ***You expressed interest in an item titled "Korg Triton Workstation/Sampler" (Item #7302424192) by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, the seller of that item is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price of £650.00. The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because either the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction. If you accept this offer, you will be able to exchange Feedback with the seller and will be eligible for eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection. To purchase this item, don't reply to this mail, just contact the seller at dacyoc@aol.com . Thank you, eBay, Inc ***Do not reply to this email . Contact the seller at this e-mail address : dacyoc@aol.com *** Kingabella
EBay were quickly on the case and sent me an Email warning me that this was fake!

See you in Brighton?

I have been asked to talk at the 'Mad About Music' exhibition at Brighton Race Course [UK] on  Sat/Sunday 19th and 20th of this month [March].  I have a brand new talk ready and I am really looking forward to it.  All the big exhibitors will there [my pal Jim Marshall will be much in evidence] so it should be good.  Also another pal, John Waterman, from Bandit, will be there....

My slot is 12 noon -1pm each day...so come along and make yourself known to me....shall I wear Versace or Armani?  [huge grin!]

What a few weeks?

One of the members has had the most amazing few weeks.  Our own Vicci Esselle.  Now the managing director of Makehits.  She played the Pepsi Cola annual convention in Zurich two weeks ago...then Spain .... then The NEC [probably the biggest venue in the UK] this week and has now been booked for the Formula One bash at Silverstone Racetrack in July with Lionel Ritchie.....is she flying?  Wow!

The 2nd of the ten best ways of making Dosh

I got so much feedback from my idea to give my opinion on the ten best ways of making dosh while you are struggling to make ends meet -  making your music [before the success comes].  I will give one idea per week and thus build up a web page of info for each way.

The second way is on the Net.  I am inundated with schemes and 'make a lot of dosh while sleeping' ideas...every day I get a new one.  And I am sure you do.  Doesn't it make sense to learn from the experts what works and what doesn't?

A wise man learns from his mistakes...a brilliant man learns from the mistakes of others.  How many times have you heard that?  So pop over to www.makehits.co.uk/moneymaking.htm and check out #2.  I cannot recommend it high enough.  By the way, I give the cost involved with each 'way of making dosh' and also the career prospects and the amount of work involved etc.  So it is fast becoming a respected reference page.  I know from the calls from members that this idea is appreciated.  You see, I don't tell fibs!

A good bit of advice?

This made me giggle [I have some nutty friends!]:

This way, when you criticise them, you'll be a mile away, and you'll have their shoes! "

Charts:

USA [my thanks to Charles in the USA for supplying this]

(1) Candy Shop, 50 Cent Featuring Olivia

(2) Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Green Day

(3) Let Me Love You, Mario

UK

 1)  STEREOPHONICS- 'DAKOTA'

) NELLY ft TIM MCGRAW -  'OVER AND OVER'

3)    ELVIS PRESLEY -  'ROCK-A-HULA BABY'

UK Download Chart  [now the most important chart in the UK]

(1)  'Dakota' - Stereophonics
(2'Over and Over' - Nelly feat. Tim McGraw
(3'Get Right' - Jennifer Lopez

Chart Comment:

The UK download chart is almost in tune with the shop bought chart....except for E**** [I won't mention his name...grin!]

At the very top is  Stereophonics         with their first ever Number One then slipped a bit is Nelly who last week duly becomes the ninth new Number One single in as many weeks, a rate of turnover not seen since the final months of 2000 when ten different singles each managed a solitary seven days at Number One. The rapper chalks up a third Number One hit single and his second in recent months, 'My Place' having hit the top back in September prior to the release of 'Tilt Ya Head Back' which hit Number 5 at Christmas.

The route to Nelly's biggest commercial successes is obvious when you consider the similar musical style of all his Number One hits to date with 'Dilemma', 'My Place' and now 'Over and Over' all playing to a laid back groove and augmented by a celebrity duettist..

The USA chart just  has no change ...what a different story to the UK...where the chart toons just seem to be Record Company fodder.....amazing.

 Subscriber's Section:

I get a lot of Emails wanting a last minute 'fix' for a situation which should be planned over months.

Hi Dec! I need your help.on my B.Tech college course tomorrow (in music technology & sound design), we are required to mic up, arrange and produce in the studio, including mixing & effects etc, of a piece of music. I am going to produce a performance of ironic (A. Morrisette) with my daughter C***** on vocals (it's a song she's done many times live).

On the track I also want to use electric & acoustic guitar, bass, drums & C***** will also do backing vocals. On the original there is also an organ & bongos which I regard as optional at the moment.

Dec, I need your help in the best order to lay these tracks down, bearing in mind I have the same musician playing drums & guitar (a genius of a lad called J**** who's also grade 8 piano & brilliant on guitar) & the same person on acoustic & bass.

I really want to do this professionally, Dec, and pin everyone's ears back. That's why I've come to you!  Hope you have the time to reply, Dec would really appreciate it. Many thanks. B** M****

First - postpone the session.....waste of time without the arrangement and the proper music. You are not ready.

Never start the session without proper music - arranged from the original sheet music. [from a shop or the Publishers].

Then everyone should have copies.

Start with click track and write the complete drum part into the computer, precisely as the record [if you are doing an exact copy...which you shouldn't be! What good will it do? You should be doing a 2005 cover of the song in your own unique style]. Under no circumstances work without a computer click track and NEVER rely on a drummer's tempo. All 'today' drummers understand this logic.

Set up 6-8 astonishing, never heard before, noise / sweep / single note samples and apply to a keyboard.

Next, record a pad sequenced into the computer [not to be used in the final mix...it just helps for reference.]
Bass [played on keyboards - use a live bass player only if you know a red hot '2005' one...hard to find], keyboards into computer. Percussion from keyboards. Now add samples by forcing yourself to incorporate the 6-8 samples mentioned above.

Guide vocal, complete vocal arrangement. Tonight I used 27 tracks for vocal arrangement.
Guitars. Electrics through JMP1 module [or Pod] and acoustics using the Serious Writers Guild techniques.
Live drums [only to be used if they ADD to the jump and excitement.] Preferably record the live drums through triggers into the computer sequencer. Then use an Akai sampler [or similar] to play drum samples [far superior to live drum sounds] or my current favourite -

Alesis DM5 drum module

or Yamaha Motif.

Clean up all the tracks and quantise for best excitement.

Replace original guide vocal. Check everything is sitting in it's own particular frequency range uncluttered. Less is always more, so be prepared to delete offending passages. ["If in doubt, leave it out"]
Mix [using filter sweeping a lot, in differing sections...also 3 unheard before effects...use RSS on vocal arrangement]
Master
HIT

B**....

All this is given in great detail in my releases of "How To Make A $Million From Your Music" at www.makehits.com . The teachers [who have never had a hit in their lives and will totally disagree with the above] never teach at those establishments, they merely let the students 'get on with it' and therefore let them just practice the 'mistakes' over and over again. All the correct Hit making techniques are in 'How To Make A £Million From Your Music' and 'The Master Class'.

The gags:  [Willie is on form this week!]

When I went to the social security office to apply for Social Security, the woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age.

I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that "I was very sorry but I seemed to have left my wallet at home.  I will have to go home and come back later."

The woman says, "Unbutton your shirt."

So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.

She says, "That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me" and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.

She says, "You should have dropped your pants you might have gotten disability too."
