Your opinion please?

Since I started The Serious Writers Guild and wrote the award winning ten month programme 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music', the amount of information that has built up on www.makehits.com and www.makehitsw.co.uk plus www.liveperforming.com has been quite enormous.

We have, probably, the biggest source of music making and songwriting info on the Net, built up over ten years.

Now the question....

Obviously a lot of the advice given and still available to read was current at the time of writing.  Nowadays some can look a tad old hat, in light of the speed at which new gear and methods become available ... for instance, I always advised guys to get going quickly and cheaply with a home studio based on Atari and Hard Disc Recording ... quite laughable today ... although a lot of Pros [myself included] will still turn to that set up for speed and efficiency ... and the results make me a lot of dosh!  A guy starting up can have a powerful hit making set up for probably $500..... yep!

So,  should I leave all that dated info without updates?

Personally I feel that I should leave them as they are, so they become a useful history of how the art of making music has changed and is still changing....each page has a date of writing .... all good sites date day of uploading to the Internet ... simply go to 'view' then scroll to 'source' and you should see toward the top of the source code a legend of the title, date, author etc.  We try to update the contact info for each page, so that the 'revised' date will show quite a recent date ... but the 'source' will show the original date of writing..... check it out!  Say, go to www.makehits.co.uk/qanda22.htm  or www.makehits.co.uk/art023.htm

My logic is based on my love of old buildings ... The society For Preservation of Ancient Buildings will always recommend that any addition to an ancient building should be in the style of today...so that, in years to come, architectural students and experts alike can easily date the year the addition was added ... I like that.

The best Ryder in the world?

We've all heard stories of the outrageous demands of some Pop Stars in their Ryders when they appear at venues .... 10,000 Smarties with the black ones removed!  Yes we have heard them all ... but this has got to be the best ever:

Iggy Pop Ryder  -  you're gonna love this

How long does it take to write a song?

You will know that I always advise that the 'idea' for a song, say that incredible hook line that you can repeat and repeat, the sort of line the girls can scream on a drunken Friday night out ... can come in ten seconds .... you know the sort?

But the actual honing of a song to make it that mega dosh earning, world wide hit, takes months of honing, cleaning up and polishing.  It takes that time to get rid of all the unnecessary cr*p, the incomprehensible words and phrases, the words which only middle aged people understand..... it takes that long to make it conversational, boy to girl, girl to boy, comfortable, smooth, simple, monosyllabic and memorable.

Tip of the Week

Undo

Ever do something stupid and accidentally delete something you shouldn’t have? Naw – we never do something like that. <G> Well, the cat could have jumped on your desk, and while walking across the keyboard highlighted a whole bunch of stuff, and then stepped on the "delete" key. That’s the way it happened to me, and I’m stickin to my story.

Rather than considering "cat stew" try the "Undo Command" first.

Most programs have an "undo command" on the command bar. MouseC lick on "Edit" and you should see it. This will undo the last action taken. Some, but not all applications, allow you to "undo"

things several layers deep, while others will only undo the last thing you did.

Can’t find the "Undo Command" you say - in most programs, Control + Z is the Undo command.

Hi Dec,

Hi Dec,

I'm sure you heard a few weeks ago about Tower closing its doors. Some say its a sign of the overall state of the industry right now(with illegal downloading, Itunes, etc.), while others say it was tower's management and they "had it coming to them".

I ' m wondering what you think about it?

Thanks for your help,

N *****

P.S. what drum sequencer software would you recommend. I use Reason because it came f r ee with Pro Tools but I can't really say whether it's better than anything else because I haven't used anything else. So, what software would you recommend just for stringing samples together in a sequencer.

My Reply:

Answer

"My Emails Are Written With Good Humour and Should Be Read With A Smile!"

Hi N*****

I'm afraid I am up to my eyes producing, writing, looking after my Members....so I have not got the luxury of giving Tower a moment's thought! Suffice to say that I always live by the maxim that you should give the public what they want ... Not what you feel they need . Perhaps that was their problem.

All mailings, downloads etc. should be complete and up to date by end of today.

As regards drum sequencing ... The Industry standard is Pro Tools or Logic 7 .... They all work the same .... We simply write the drums into the session through a mother keyboard ... Kik, Snare, HH, lots of perc. and noise samples. ... Our knowledge is built on years of working with live drummers, listening and aping great drum patterns of Top three hits and using the best sample CD's and the best drum samples in the current crop of industry standard keyboards and modules. Yamaha Motif, Triton, Kurtsweil PCR2 [I don't have a Kurtsweil but I am advised they are the 'dogs']

The benefit of using Pro tools is that the sessions are fully transportable ... Every major studio uses Pro tools so I can work in my home studio, then travel to Rome, record a vocal, come back home and continue working on it ... Or I can send the files to Rome and have the vocalist put his/her vocal on ... They then send it back and I can load the vocal files into my Pro tools. I don't really like that scenario as the producing then is not totally in my hands.

We sometimes use SKYPE telephone and video Internet communication ... So I can see the session in progress although the sound is only telephone quality, the client can likewise see the session in my studio in progress. ... We are working on a Video link situation, which will help a lot.

I have currently got three project I am working on in precisely that way.

Using Reason and any of the many software programmes takes you out of the Industry Standard way of operating ... Although it is c heap or maybe f ree, it certainly will not advance your career or your production skills ...stick to Industry standard. Pro tools running on a Mac platform ...as seen in every studio of note in the world.

The gags: .....   A rude one?

A guy goes to the supermarket and notices a beautiful blond woman
wave at him and say hello.

He's rather taken aback, because he can't place where he knows her
from.

So he says, "Do you Know me?" To which she replies, "I think  you're
the father of one of my kids".

Now his mind travels back to the only time he has ever been
unfaithful to his wife and says, "My God, are you the stripper
from my bachelor party that I made love to on the pool table with all my buddies
watching, while your partner whipped my butt with wet celery???"

She looks into his eyes and calmly says, "No, I'm your son's maths
  teacher"
