End of an Era? [a great legal brain leaves us]

I had a sad call from Beth Sheridan to tell me that my career long friend Bernard Sheridan had died after quite a long fight against a debilitating illness.

Anyone in the music industry world wide will know the powerful legal organisation 'Sheridans' ... currently looking after mighty names, for instance Il Divo on their current world tour.

My band were one of the first clients of Bernard when he started back in the Sixties at 14 Red Lion Square. Then there was Tom Jones, Pink Flloyd, Kate Bush, Gerry Rafferty and almost the whole of the mega dosh making side of the Record Industry.  Right in the middle of all The Beatles legal problems.  A true friend, a great wine expert [I fooled him once with a really cheap bottle of wine at an excellent temperature!].

I am thrilled that the very last time he was out socially was to see my band in concert at Wimborne in Dorset.  We had a fun dinner before the show and it was a joy to see that sparking, agile mind come to life ... the stories, the laughs, the reminiscences.

We shall miss you, Bernard.

"Police Begin Campaign to Run Down Jaywalkers" [Now that's taking  things a bit far!]

The band to see?  Il Divo

It was always said on the performing side of the Record Industry that the band to see and learn from was my band 'The Bachelors'.

Louis Walshe modeled his 'Boyzone' band on us and then there was Westlife.

Now, Simon Cowell has created the greatest musical phenomemon ever in history with Il Divo.  I have said that Sheridans look after their legal affairs [as they did ours] but the four singers have taken all our techniques, methods and tricks and taken them to the next level.  Stunning is the only word for them.

I saw them at Wembley last week and they were breathtaking.  They were using tricks that Con and I had forgotten we used!  I would advise anyone serious about our industry to get along to see their world tour ... if you can get a ticket!  Buy their latest DVD.  Get their 'Siempre' album.  The first band to ever go straight to Number One in the USA album charts with their first album.  39 Number Ones through the World and 133 gold and platinum awards, all in three years - unbelievable!  Could you learn from them?  You bet.

I am really excited about my latest book being released this week.  so many of the members of 'Serious Writers Guild' have called me.

We had a slight hold up at the printers but now we are ready to go.  "So You're thinking Of Recording Guitar" is set to unlock all the closely guarded secrets of the mega guitar band producers.  With the avalanche of guitar based bands around the world this will be an important tool in your armoury, as, that all important monster guitar sound, whether acoustic or electric, will be so important.

Stand by for the announcement.

Hi Dec,

Thanks for sending the second installment of the Live Performing Series.
I am applying this and rehearsing my band with the intention to start gigging in London again after a long time out of the music business.
Your words have been a great inspiration towards making it happen.

Subscriber's Section [Where can I find great drum sounds?]

Hi Dec

One of the country's most respected new music radio DJs has heard a handful of my home demos and has approached me offering help getting the music heard by her radio and music industry contacts.
I am putting together several new recordings. I agree with your advice about drum tracks - the drums are often the thing that most lets inexpensive recordings down. So I want something that sounds like a live drummer on an acoustic kit - but I want to retain control over the drum patterns, I want the performance to be really tight (i.e. sequenced) and I want the best possible sounds...
Where can I find such sounds?

P.S. to give you a better idea of what I am about, please listen to my tune 'Gotta Have A Lotta Love' at www.myspace.com/theadmireables

Hi D****

Nice to hear from you.

First, may I respectfully say that your question is self defeating.

<<<<<< the drums are often the thing that most lets inexpensive recordings down. So I want something that sounds like a live drummer on an acoustic kit>>>>>>>>>>

It is the acoustic kit sound that lets down the amateur recordings every time.  The hit mix is always The Vocal Arrangement + the drums.  Get those right and the rest is purely the framing around the picture.

If you read 'How to make a $Million' you will see that drum sounds have evolved to a point miles past 'live drum sounds'.

We use samples which have been tweaked, added to, layered and perfected to give extremely full frequency sounds.  The kiks today are hard and massive.  The snares are tight, knock your ears off and fill an enormous frequency range ... the metal work, likewise, and the hats are brassy and full.

So, you see that using 'real' drum samples, no matter how well programmed, will always sound 'small' and wimpy..

My band has not used live drum sounds on stage for 30 years ... we use a live drummer but each drum surface has a trigger attached and we use a range of 30 drum sets from the sampler at the sound desk.

Similarly, if I use a live drummer in the studio, I work the same way ... although the live drummer rarely 'adds to the occasion' and I may only use some of the high hat patterns.

Live kit samples are readily available on any drum module ... the most popular being the ancient Alesis D4 .... the later DM5 is much better for today sounds and the Korg Triton and Yamaha Motif have very acceptable 'today' samples, especially the Motif when layered [two or three kik samples together, say]

I devise a particular kik that will suit the particular track I am working on .... then sample the finished article and store that for future use.  So there is never a situation of using the same kik for everything I do ... that is a fatal mistake made by all amateurs.

Listen to Dr. Dre productions to understand that logic.  In fact, it is easy to sample stuff from his productions.  The reason being that he has evolved such full frequency samples that he can just have the drum kit on it's own for whole passages [impossible in the old days of 'live' drums].  That is the reason 'pads' evolved years ago.  To fill up the frequencies in the frequency spectrum.  We don't need them today.

The drum sample CD I most recommend is 'Black Butta 3' by Mad Jeff available from Time and Space.

Combining samples from that and Yamaha Motif etc. can result in mighty sounds .... but whatever you do, keep well away from live drum samples .... you gain absolutely NOTHING.

Regards

The gags: .....     Willie at it again! [ slightly rude? ]

"This is a special day for me too, I am also celebrating!" says the woman.

"What a coincidence!" says the farmer.

As they clinked glasses the farmer asked "What are you celebrating?"

"My husband and I have been trying to have a child and today my gynecologist told me that I am pregnant!"

"What a coincidence" says the man. "I'm a chicken farmer and for years all of my hens were infertile, but today they are all laying fertilized eggs "

"That's great!" says the woman, "How did your chickens become fertile?"

"I used a different cock," he replied.

The woman smiled and said, "What a coincidence!"
