"No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple."

Have you missed me? [How busy can I get?]

have been missing for a while?  Yep, I have been on tour ... then recording the last four tracks for my band's latest CD ... this one our 70th, so I have to make it the best ever.  It's called 'Encore' and features a bunch of tracks that we wish we had recorded.  Each track takes approx. 3 weeks start to finish.

The touring has upped ... we try to be so selective about what we do but the work load just seems to increase all the time.

Jim Marshall is not well again.  We are all saddened by the fact he is in hospital again ... purely as a precaution this time.  It is more than sad because he had invited a few friends to his home for lunch this Saturday.  My brother and I had shifted so many arrangements to be there .. and now, after talking to  Lesley, Terry Marshall's wife it seems the great man will not be able to make it.  Still he is an inspiration to all who know him.

Check out the new Vintage/Modern range of amps from Marshall ... I was with the designer, Steve Dawson, at Jim's birthday party .... I can't wait to try them myself.

"Stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only the left hand .."

Another Award? [my band gets another 'gong']

Venue Magazine surprised my brother and I by voting us the best 'Big Name' act currently playing in the UK.

Quite an honour .... I couldn't be there to collect the 'gong' but my brother travelled to collect it and have the pics taken with the boss of Stage Newspaper. .  Check them out at http://www.thebachelors.co.uk/2007.htm

"And "lollipop" is the longest word typed with your right hand. (Bet you tried this out mentally, didn't you?)"

RCF open day and Audex 2007 to be held at City of Manchester Stadium

RCF UK has announced that it will be holding its UK Dealer Day at the City of Manchester Stadium on Thursday October 18th. The event has been timed to coincide with the annual, RW Salt-organised commercial, professional and secure audio products exhibition Audex, which will this year incorporate a major new pro-sound area, reports David Davies.

Subscriber's Section [how much do I get from a Publishing deal?]

Dec

Hi ya!

I just wanted to know how much I could expect financially from my first song being published in a deal. Is it £100s, £1000s etc plus royalties. I have been offered a deal and just awaiting contract in next couple of days but really need to know so I don't get ripped off.

Please reply,

V****

The real answer to your question is 'exactly zero'....... unless............

The song has to sell to make any money.  Most newcomers to the money side of our business totally forget that fact.

Similar to a recording contract ... as Simon Cowell said "The contract is only the start of a very long road".

The cold facts are that any publisher will offer any writer a contract (usually no money changes hands] ....BUT.............

The value of your worth as a writer can only be judged by:

1) the amount of advance money ... bearing in mind that advance money HAS to be paid back from the initial monies earned.  So, in fact, you do not earn any money until the advance is paid back in total.  The advance is meant as subsidence while you are not earning money and writing like mad.  After the advance is paid back you then wait until the next pay out time [sometimes as long as six months for any money]

2) The amount of 'signing fee'.  This is when you really know that the Publishing Company realise your true value.  The signing fee is non-recoupable.  You do not have to pay it back ... it is simply a sign of your worth in the marketplace.

The way to success on the financial side is to have your own Publishing Company.  This will ensure that you get 100% of the royalties and not the standard 50% which any publisher will offer.

In operating your own company, you quickly realise that you have to write commercial,  dosh making tracks to keep alive!  Signing with a company usually means the writer sits back and expects the Publisher to do all the work ... in fact, they will usually do nothing.  Modern day Publishing Companies exist simply to pick up the royalties on successful records ... usually the records of the potential hit writers they have signed up.

I would be fascinated to know how much the company you propose signing with are paying you?

Regards

The gags: .....     Kelvin Britton-Miles  [Good Advice, girls?]

1. It is important that a man helps you around the house and has a job.

2. It is important that a man makes you laugh.

3. It is important to find a man you can count on and doesn't lie to you.

4. It is important that a man loves you and spoils you.

5. It is important that these four men don't know each other.

 OK? How many? Three?

Wrong, there are six - no joke!

Read again!  FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

The reasoning is ...  The brain cannot process the word "OF". Incredible or what?

Anyone who counts all six F's on the first go is a genius Three is normal.
