Quite the bravest man I have ever known [Jim Marshall shows he is a survivor]

I was incredibly honoured last Friday to be invited to the 84th birthday party of Jim Marshall ... the man who invented LOUD.

The room was full of Show Biz.  You know the sort of deal?  See under for pics.

Jim has had a fearful year.  A long stay in hospital ... my Goodness, I don't know how he got through it.  He swore to me that he would make his birthday party... and he did.  With dignity, warmth, strength and charm.  Still with a glass of his favourite, expensive malt whiskey, a mammoth cigar ... eating like a Trojan ... maybe that is his secret?  A great appetite?  For food, enjoyment and for life.

Why would the UK law require a frail, elderly man to go to the entrance door to smoke his cigar?  I am not a smoker ... but dear, oh dear, what an insult to such a giant of a man.  An inspiration to all who were there.

We chatted a lot, his enthusiasm for his Marshall products is undiminished.  Steve Dawson [ex Animals and now head of R&D at Marshall] told me of the thrilling new line of Marshall Amps combining the best of old, valve technology with the latest innovations in amp. design ... called the Vintage/Modern series ... I can't wait.

I bought a fantastic short sleeve shirt in Estapona [Spain] last week and, after checking Jim's size, I promised to bring him back an identical one ... he was thrilled.

And I would have to say, he had a stunning suit on.  Expensive or what?

Check list in your site make-over? [follow the revamp of our sites week by week]

We are now in the third week of a massive make over of our sites and I invite you to look at the methods we are using and perhaps use them for yourself.  You can check out http://www.makehits.com/products090707/index.html to see how we are progressing .... but the main pages are under wraps at the moment.

The latest addition is a fabulous tool for displaying your product ... that may be a CD, a DVD, a book, brochure, software package .. whatever.

The software is simple to use.  All you need is a Jpeg or Gif or PNG of the item.  The software will recreate the item in 3D ... giving the appearance of a jewel cased CD or book or whatever you want to present.

You can add fabulous lighting effects ... including 5 types of shadow from individual lights ... you can position the viewing angle and also add flash glare, if you want to be really clever.  Quite a phenomenal piece of kit, the best I have seen.  Check out a few of the finished effects at http://www.makehits.com/mach1guitar.htm .  Look at the images of the books.

To learn more and order this knock-out 'Cover Factory' software [it's dirt cheap!]  go to http://www.ebookcompiler.com/a_cf.php?n=dec040507

http://www.makehits.com/peelindex.htm will give you the peel down advert at the top right hand of our front pages .... and you can have that [again dirt cheap].  I wonder what it will do for your site?  How much will it increase your sales?  Your credibility?  http://www.makehits.com/peelindex.htm

The next provides streaming audio direct from your own site .... your new toons?  Your own voice telling of your products, tracks, show availability or your current bookings list? http://www.makehits.com/\audiorazor.htm   Dirt cheap and no monthly payments to host your audio, as with other systems ... and this is true streaming.  http://www.makehits.com/\audiorazor.htm

Les Paul and Mary Ford live [I have always been fascinated with their music]

Since I was a tiny kid I have always had a fascination for the multi tracking techniques of Les Paul and Mary Ford.  So they are mighty relevant to today's music scene.

They say that Kaye Starr was the very first artist to double track a vocal [they also say that Les produced it] ... but Les Paul showed the world how to do it for real.  And how many tracks did he use?  And how did he keep the recordings so clean?  Precious little tape hiss?

There is fascinating footage [posted at Utube] .... showing both the multi tracking techniques live on TV and also just the two of them absolutely live .... stunning stuff when you think how old it is.  Did you know that Les invented the solid electric guitar?  A 'Gibson Les Paul' is probably the most drooled over guitar around, to this day.

Check out the hilarious pic. of Les and my pal Jim Marshall taken last year ... in "So You Wanna Record Guitar?"  http://www.makehits.com/recordingguitar.htm

A Kick in the teeth from Gordon Brown for UK Record makers

Quite "A shocking failure to listen": UK government supports Gowers copyright review .

A number of prominent industry figures have expressed their anger at the UK government's decision last week to support the Gowers Review on copyright terms. Despite widespread pressure to make the case to the European Commission for an extension to copyright term on sound recordings to 70 years, Gordon Brown's administration has elected to back the Gowers recommendation that the present 50-year term be retained ..... David Davies.

truly awesome sound experience [Only for those who are serious]

D & B are truly the most respected sound reproduction company in the world ... their speakers and systems are lusted over world-wide.

Subscriber's Section [snakes and looms?]

Dec

Just wondered if anyone could advise me on how to loom my leads together - I have 7 drum mic leads I want to loom. Don't want to use any messy tape or anything that will make them sticky - any ideas?

Kind regards ...  J****

Our rules are "one short reply to ONE question FOR NON-MEMBERS, Members of 'The Serious Writers Guild' have unlimited personal access to Dec by direct telephone, Fax and Email , apply at https://secure.mistral.co.uk/makehits/swgappsecure.htm ".

J****

Looming wires together will always be messy, there are many tape products on the market [try Maplin or Radio Shack] but they are not for heavy duty use and will always fall apart.  Jiffy Ties are good but when tailored and cut to size will rip your hands when coiling the loom.

Consider a proper loom?  Or snake as some call it?  There is a lot to take into account before making a choice.

1)  For Live Work or for Recording? Or both?
2)  Hi Impedance, or Lo Impedance?
3) Length of loom required.?
4) Permanent installation or fly leads one end with stage box at other end?
5) How much Cash available?

1)  For Live Work or for Recording? Or both?
For Live work it is essential to have the best quality, heavy duty loom on a drum .... this has to withstand heavy usage and also withstand clumsy use by roadies. Best quality cable and Neutrik plugs, well manufactured, will mean trouble free use night after night.

For recording work, you can get away with installation quality plugs, but the loom Multicore cable, though heavy duty is not necessary, the quality has to be the best.  Installation cable is usually much lighter and thinner than cable for road use. .

2)  Hi Impedance, or Lo Impedance?
If the requirement is for Hi Impedance, then you simply need good quality core and shield cable  -  but Lo Impedance will require two core and shield.  Bear in mind that long runs of Hi Impedance can pick up a lot of spurious noise - especially in a live situation.

3) Length of loom required.?
If you require a very long run, then it may be best to buy a drum of cable and find a friend with knowledge to make up the loom, buying the components separately.

4) Permanent installation or fly leads one end with stage box at other end?
A permanent installation in a studio would usually have a stage box [a box with many XLR [mic.] and jack, earphone and even midi sockets] screwed to the wall or left as a movable box to facilitate differing drum positions.  It would be semi permanently plugged into the mixing desk in the control room.  This is the best arrangement, particularly in a live situation with a multi plug and socket at the mixing desk end.  Saves oodles of time at set up ... it is a nightmare trying to plug in 20/30 fly leads and get them all right ... with a multi plug you just plug it in, end of story - grab a coffee.

5) How much Cash available?

Get the Studiospares catalogue or similar and see what is available in ready made or custom made form.

If you have a decent amount put by, then you can get all the questions above answered and simply go to a company like VDC or HHB or Studiospares [all in UK but similar exist in the USA and Europe, Aussie ] and ask them to quote a price for make up and delivery.

If you are boot strapping, then go to a good music shop such as Guitar Amp and Keyboard Centre in  Brighton [again similar shops are everywhere] and see what they have at an affordable level .... you may be able to adapt an existing commercial design - although they usually have permanent moulded plugs and sockets.

A shop like this will have looms from four wire patch leads up to 32 channel stage box designs in stock for you to look at and figure how you can use it.

REMEMBER:  Our sound jockey for our concert rig always says as he reels in the 75 metre 48 way loom: "careful - that is the most important piece of kit in the rig" ... expensive, well bought, well thought out ... and highly dependable.  And then, easy to sell on should he wish for a bigger or different format.

Regards

The gags: .....      A new contributor [ true, funny, but not if you are The Queen? ]

Council tax re-evaluers want to charge us more if we live in a nice area. That ought to mean discounts for those of us who live in rough areas.

We have a huge council house in our street. The extended family is run by a grumpy old woman with a pack of fierce dogs.
Her car isn't taxed or insured, and doesn't even have a number plate, but the police still do nothing.

Her bad tempered old man is famous for upsetting foreigners with racist comments. A shopkeeper blames him for ordering the murder of his son and his son's girlfriend, but nothing has been proved yet.

All their kids have broken marriages except the youngest, who everyone thought was gay.

Two grandsons are meant to be in the Army but are always seen out in nightclubs. The family's odd antics are always in the papers.
They are out of control. ..........

Honestly - who'd live near Windsor Castle?
