 Okay, so I've been missing?

I would not wish the past few weeks of of my music life on anyone!  I conclude the deal for my band's 66th and 67th album....then the 68th was commissioned.  So lots of 2am in the morning finishes.  Strangely I always advise anyone who asks not to work that late.

2 am in the morning does not work.  Tired, bog eyed and brain dead...there is never any good music made after 10pm.  But hey, I always try.  silly really!

Then setting up our advertising material for the biggest deal in the history of Serious Writers Guild.  Our award winning 'How To Make A Million From Your Music' is being distributed by Fleet Street Publications...one of the biggest publishers in the world.  Check out the offer at www.makehits.com/FSP.htm  .

I f that wasn't enough we launched the Mad About Music seminar audio CD and CDRom .... the result was phenomenal and the reaction fro the first customers is sensational ... so there was more than me bog eyed at the Makehits Head    quarters. There is always huge excitement in our offices when we launch a new product ['Mad About Music' - The Live Seminar]  www.makehits.com/madaboutmusic.htm

"Thank you ever so much - I've received the 'mad about music - the seminar' package

What can I say - wow, this stuff is absolutely mind-blowing...

Keep up the great work..... Christian Basener"

What an opportunity for Tim, our Member

Our Member and long time friend Tim Duce called me to tell me about his Master Classes with Gerry Geddes.  He is appearing at the Gerry Geddes workshop performance with Mike King (piano) and Silvio Gallasso (bass player with Chaka Khan) at the Battersea Barge (hip and groovy nightspot on the Thames)!

Gerry Geddes is an award winning New York director who specialises in working with singers. He has directed numerous stars including Sarah Vaughan and Manhattan Transfer.  Tim's music work is fast becoming stunning and I can't wait to to hear what Gerry has done to his voice.

"The definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results."

Are you like me?

I am totally fascinated with happenings in the night sky.  Remember a couple of years ago when five planets were so visible in the sky.  I was in Spain at the time and was enthralled every night with the sight.....

Now there is an even better happening coming:

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot.  At the beginning of August it will rise in the East at 10 PM. and reach its azimuth at about 3 AM.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 AM That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

Not too complicated?

So You Want To Run a Music Business?

You can't operate a music business for zero outlay and maintenance, particularly on the Net.

A "zero cost" type of operation raises a huge "red flag" and will seldom succeed. Would you send off your hard earned money to someone with a Post Office Box and a free email account? I know I wouldn't.

The minimum you should have is your own domain with your own email address. You can forward that address to your ISP address, or better yet, use an email client such as Eudora or Pegasus which allows you to maintain a professional email address.

If you can't afford these minimum costs and some consistent advertising, you don't have the "ante" and don't belong in the game. Someone may survive on word of mouth with a low overhead business in the "brick and mortar" world, but the person with the "zero cost" online business is simply wasting their time.

Chart Comment:

Not much change at all this week ... but what a phenomenon happening in the UK.  Americans will ask: "Is it true that a ringtone has topped the singles chart over there?"

A ten second ringtone is indeed the Number One single in the UK and it is the end of the music business as we know it.

The rest of us know the real story of course. When German telecoms company Jamster picked up the rights to a well known viral flash animation and its accompanying sound effect for sale as a mobile ringtone they wound up with something of a phenomenon on their hands. Backed of course by copious amounts of carefully targeted television advertising, Crazy Frog became the must have download for an entire generation across Europe. With that kind of ubiquity it was almost inevitable that someone would turn the jingle into a pop record - it was after all a chance for Jamster to make even more money out of the concept. Producers Bass Bumpers (hitherto known only for their 1994 Top 30 single 'The Music's Got Me') have meshed the ding-ding-ding of Crazy Frog onto a by the numbers cover version of Harold Faltermeyer's 1995 movie hit 'Axel F' and the result is what you see here, a record that has sold 150,000 copies in its first week on sale (curiously enough only a handful of them online), enough to make it far and away the biggest selling track of the week.

Doing the gig of a lifetime?  The big chance?  Read on......

"Dec - just thought I'd drop you an E-mail to let you know the band I'm drumming with has just been booked to support American Head Charge in August.

We got this gig through our lead singer knowing the organiser for the UK leg of the tour, but I could now do with some guidance with regards what steps to take to make sure not only that the performance is tight, but also that the financial and logistical side runs smoothly.

At present we don't have a manager; would it be a good first step to find a manager suited to our style of music (a cross between emo, hardcore and trance, with a distinct indie vibe)? What payment can we expect per gig, and what insurance, etc will we need to invest in before the gig?

Obviously, on the performing side new sets of guitar strings and new drum heads are a must, as well as clean cymbals and guitars; but what else can you recommend we do to make sure that this is the gig that sets us firmly on the path to success?

Many thanks, A***"

Hi A***

You have the conception totally wrong!

<<<<<<<<to take to make sure not only that the performance is tight>>>>>>>>

I feel you should realise that the 'big boys' don't just rely on 'tight'.  You MUST have an added instruments track running with the live band to ensure that all the samples/tricks/unique effects/additional instruments/added vocal arrangement to those on stage.... to make sure you have your own unique, never heard before, sound.

It is NOTHING to do with 'tight'.  Check The Brits, Grammys ... check any MTV chart clip or TOTP's [Top of the Pops].

Sadly, like a lot of guys, you may have read my stuff and treated it like nice bedtime reading...it is far too late now to start implementing all the methods...but you could try.

<<<<<<<<<would it be a good first step to find a manager suited to our style of music >>>>>>>>

Under no circumstances!  You must get the success YOURSELF.  The great managers will find you very quick!  At the moment you have nothing for a manager to manage?  Again a common misconception in our business.  It is YOU that has to have the success...the manager can't get it for you.  He is a manager...and a manager manages!

The only manager you will find at the moment is an inexperienced twit who knows nothing about this business....but thinks it might be fun and an easy way to make a fortune.  It is neither of those.

<<<<<<<<<<What payment can we expect per gig, >>>>>>>>

You will be lucky to get paid at all...it will probably cost you...in digs [hotels], greasing the palm of the tour sound engineer [you would be advised to tour the best recording sound engineer, who knows your stuff - not the typical 'live' sound boy....useless!].  A reputable promotion company putting on a tour would normally sort a split with the record company who will pay expenses for the support band.

If the headlining band are not supported by the record company, then it is generally the promoters who would negotiate with you...again all the negotiating skills are outlined in 'How To Make A Million'

<<<<<<<<<what insurance>>>>>>>>

Membership of The Musicians Union automatically gives you 7Mill UKP public liability insurance which the promoter will demand to see.  He will also demand to see all the PAT [Portable Appliance Test] stickers for all electrical equipment.

<<<<<<<<<<<will we need to invest in before the gig?>>>>>>>>>>

If you haven't got the designer outfits then it is a little late to start finding a designer.  Again, it is too late for 3 months of power walking, gym sessions, 3 sessions at the tan shop, 3 visits to Toni and Guys....manicures, pedicures, skin toning with lots of facials.....plus the teeth.

All the big boys understand all this stuff....all the outfits you see on Telly or at awards shows or major tours are designed and blended by top experts....the band's job is to LOOK THE BUSINESS.  And no matter what type of music you play, that is the name of the game....great stage looks and presentation do not happen by accident.

The other investment is in staging and choreography .... check out Greenday, MacFly, Busted....then go on to Black Eyed Peas, Outkast.  They are all staged and choreographed to death!  Check out the 'One Minute' of the past ....go to www.makehits.com/archive2.htm for that last one.

<<<<<<<<<<< but what else can you recommend we do to make sure that this is the gig that sets us firmly on the path to success?>>>>>>>>>

I would study 'How To Make A Million From Your Music' and I would immediately get 'The Art of Live Performing' at www.liveperforming.com.

You only get one chance in this game usually....and only 3% of bands/artists are even vaguely prepared......are you going to be in the 97%?

This business is 80% visual and only 20% music.....despite what all your unsuccessful pals and probably your band mates say.....the music is the pig easy bit.

It is only the tiny percentage who go the extra mile who even have a chance of success.

The gags:  [I hope you are not religious!]

One day God calls down to Noah and  says, "Noah me old china, I want you to make me a new Ark".

Noah replies, "No probs God, me old Supreme Being. Anything you want - after all you're the guv'

But God interrupts, "Ah, but there's a catch. This time Noah, I don't want just a couple of decks, I want 20 decks one on top of the other".

"20 DECKS!" screams Noah "Well, OK Big Man, whatever you say. Should I fill it up with all the animals just like last time?"

"Yep, that's right, well. Sort of right. This time I want you to fill it up with fish", God answers.

 "Fish?" queries Noah.

"Yep, fish. Well, to make it more specific Noah, I want carp - wall to wall, floor to ceiling - Carp!"

Noah looks to the skies. "OK God my old mucker, let me get this right, you want a New Ark?"

"Check".

"With 20 decks, one on top of the other?"

 "Check".

"And you want it full of Carp?"

 "Check".

"Why?" Asks the perplexed Noah, who was slowly but surely getting to the end of his tether.

(Scroll down everyone! It's the best ever !!!!)

"Dunno", says God, "I just fancied a Multi-Storey Carp Ark".
