A Chance to get on the ProTools ladder? [chance in a lifetime?]

I have a complete Protools recording set up in my studio surplus to requirements!

See the 'Subscriber's Section' below for proper details..... this is serious gear and gets you straight in there with the big boys ... great advantage is that you get total access to me for problem solving and advice.

I have to be knowledgeable about all the latest gear for the members of my Serious Writers Guild and that is why I had this.  It is complete, Mac G4 tower with keyboard and mouse.  MBox 1 loaded with 6.9 Protools LE ... full factory bundle of software with ILOK key and all discs... even a flat screen monitor and a two in two our Edirol Midi interface ... plug in a keyboard and a mic. and you are recording straight away.

Servicing? [  a good contact gets in touch]

Hi Dec, It's Andy Collins here we've spoken a few times and met through Dave Eames. As you know I service audio equipment for a living under the name Antech Systems and have repaired your electric guitar once.

I saw your article on mic servicing and you were asked to recommend a service engineer, as you didn't actually recommend one in your answer I was hoping you could recommend me. Antech Systems is a recommended service centre for among others Roland, Korg, Mackie and Allen & Heath and my regular customers include Gary Numan, Producer Richard Hewson, Bonners music store as well as most local studios and schools and musicians.
Please see contact details below.

In the case of the Rode mic they are capacitance mics and actually have quite alot of circuitry in them, but Rode do offer a 10 year warranty and with proof of purchase will repair it free of charge.

PS
Is the Phil Solomon you refer to the same man who taught the drums and wrote a  book on drum tuition?

Best regards  ... Andy Collins (B.Eng.Hons.)

My Reply:

The Philip Solomon is not the drum guy [vaguely similar name that won't come to me at the moment].  Philip was one of the Solomon family from Belfast ... the family business was Solomon and Peres who had the distribution rights of all records in Ireland ... Philip's father then bought a amajority shareholding in Decca when they were on their uppers in the fifties.  This gave Philip massive influence in Decca through Dick rowe, a very close from of Philip and then myself.  I was with Dick when he died ... a great honour.... and organised his funeral.  Lionel Solomon had a string of Record shops in N. Ireland ... Mervin Solomon started Emerald Records ... who became huge in Ireland ... then Philip came to UK ... discovered Ruby Murray [first artist to have 1,2,3,4,5 in the chart at the same time ... only equaled by The Beatles, I believe.]

Then discovered Bridie Gallagher ... huge with Irish people ... then Pam Ayres, Van Morrison, The Dubliners, Malcolm Roberts, Raymonde Le Fevre [still the biggest selling orchestra ever], Phil Coulter, Frank Carson, Lena Zavaroni ... he had a deal with Oppotunity Knocks [Hughie Green] that all the upcoming winners were passed to him.  Involved with Tom Jones, Englebert, Gilbert O'Sullivan.  Dorothy and Philip get a huge glowing mention from Sharon Osbourne in her recent book [as I do!]

He managed our recording career.  We co-owned Radio Caroline with him for a spell.  Started Major Minor Records, Galaxy Records.

Then opened Solomon Galleries [art] and became a massive force in the art world David Hockney and others were 'made' by him.

An inspiration, to this day.... I learned more about style, culture and business from Philip than anyone else.  A fantastic, larger than life character.  We don't see guys like him in Show Biz. any more.  In writing this I have just called Dorothy ... he is quite low still but he will get through.

"Look well into thyself; there is a source of strength
which will always spring up if thou wilt always look there." Marcus Aurelius

Hidden Battery Power [a neat trick?]

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the
keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell phone next time.

"Each day provides its own gifts." Marcus Aurelius

Success Story  [ a member keeps his success quiet? ]

Dec,

That's great, Dec, thanks again.

Funny, I spent 3 years working for Pete Tong using pro-tools to put together the Essential Mix, Essential Selection and International Essential Selection radio sows, plus a host of others, but you're constantly working so fast and under so much time constraint, it's only now I'm not doing it I have the time to explore the full capacity of protools.

Subscriber's Section [ How to  get a good priced recording computer ]

"Please can you advise me ! I return to the U.K next month and I'm going to create my own Home Recording Studio. I have very limited knowledge of what equipment to purchase, I have received your courses which show what equipment to use, but that was a few years ago and i guess equipment may have moved on since.

I want to do the proper job Dec, with samples, loops etc, I am a singer song/writer and write my own material, and also my aim is to write songs & instrumentals for commercial sale so i am conscious of quality reproduction of music sounds.

Being a novice at recording it would be more sensible for me to purchase a basic system and then expand as i progress.

I do hope you can help me with what to choose Dec, thank you.

Please may i ask for one more piece of advise. I have recorded an album of my own songs in a recording studio here in Cyprus, is it possible i can get all my recordings from the studio and transfer them onto my new home recording system so that i can add new sounds etc to all the songs.

Once again Dec,Thank you in anticipation.

This is the second Email today asking me almost the same question.

There is lots of home studio info in the articles at http://www.makehits.co.uk/artintro.htm

You say you want basic equipment and then expand.

Whatever you do, do not be talked into anything other than Apple Macintosh computer and Pro Tools.  That is the Industry Standard world wide ... no studio ever uses PC and I have only worked in one studio that did not have Pro Tools [what a nightmare that was?]

Strangely I am selling a complete 'ready to go' Pro Tools set up shortly on Ebay. ... details below.

As regards keyboards, again I would aim for the current Industry Standard ... Korg Triton keyboard [not the LE version] and the Yamaha Motif sound module.  They are not the cheapest, but will give you all the 'today' sounds you hear on chart records.

I still use two Akai samplers ... simply because I have always worked that way ... you can sample straight into Pro Tools but I find it quicker to use a dedicated sampler ... The Akai S950 is ancient but still favoured by guys like me.  Time and Space Sample CD's like Black Butta 3 by Mad Jeff are essential.

Bog Standard SM58 mics. will give you Industry Standard results .... you may eventually want more expensive condenser mics.

I prefer to work with stand alone mixing desks ... although you can mix on screen with Pro Tools ... I just feel I have more control and I feel that the sound is bigger!  I currently use two Soundcraft 24 channel desks linked together ... that, then, gives me a huge amount of insert points for Effects, Compressors etc.

The most important part of the whole deal is to spend the time [and a little money] on ensuring that the recording and monitoring space is as dead as possible and that you use Industry Standard monitors with the biggest power amp you can afford.

Go to http://www.makehits.co.uk/art025.htm for my latest studio advice.

<<<<<<<< is it possible i can get all my recordings from the studio and transfer them onto my new home recording system so that i can add new sounds etc to all the songs.>>>>>>>>>

If he has used Pro Tools then it is easy to just ask him for the session files ... then you can do what you like with them ... if you paid for them, in law, you own them.  And that is the whole beauty of using Pro Tools ... you simply can take the files anywhere in the world to any studio.

The gags: .....      [  How old are you? ]

Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked,
'How old was your husband?' '98,' she replied.
'Two years older than me'
'So you're 96,' the undertaker commented.
She responded, 'Hardly worth going home, is it?
