I must be more famous than I thought? [now there are web sites dedicated to destroying my reputation?]

They say that you are only famous on the Internet when nerds and idiots start trying to destroy your reputation.

I have seen some absolute drivel written in Music Newsgroups about me ... all of it lies ... trying to 'knock' me.  Now there are two websites [that I know of...there may be more].  Writing crazy lies ... so I must be as famous as Paypal and EBay .... have you seen the way nerds and anoraks try to knock them?

I just got off the phone from advising a guy on the finer points of the percentage a writer can demand nowadays from a publishing company re. Mechanicals [royalties on sales of records] .... a tough subject and one you need expert advice on when you are negotiating a big time recording and publishing contract [this member is using the 'How To Start Your Own Publishing Company for less than £100' manual].  After a 30 minute deep 'teaching' on the phone I opened an Email from my pal John Harrison, who you will know owns 'Streetwise' one of the biggest Bus iness Op portunity companies in the world ... a fabulous guy and a businessman I really respect http://www.streetwisepublications.co.uk/

Hi Dec

I'm sure you've probably seen this, but just in case you haven't, I've posted the link below:

http://****key.******.com/

Sometimes I hate the internet! Not sure what you do about it. I haven't had much success getting the lies about us removed in the past.

All the best

John Harrison

They claim that my Email address does not work .... just for fun, try it!  dec@makehits.com  See how fast I reply [10 hours max if I am not on tour, 24 hours if I am].  They claim my private number for members does not work?  Members, you know better, don't you? ... I am available on tel, fax, Email, letter, even SKYPE ... but the real number is exclusive to members. [UK office hours please].  A claim that 'The Serious Writers Guild does not exist ??????  Do be serious!  Ask the members in 47 countries.

A claim that I do not publish my address?  It has been compulsory in UK law since January to publish the registered address, Company Number and VAT [Value Added Tax] number on all home pages .... check out any of our sites www.makehits.co.uk www.makehits.com www.liveperforming.com

In fact, if you are operating from the UK, you have to have that detail on your home page [you have been warned!]

The real reason why these guys are trying to destroy me is simple "All good will be attacked" as it says in the good book.  Here are the real reasons:

1) The first guy sent me a demo years ago to critique ... I did, honestly and conscientiously .... he did not like the truth in what I said ... he has made a religion out of attacking me ever since!

2) The latest one is too good to be true .... you couldn't make it up .... he is annoyed because I didn't include his question in 'One Minute With Dec' ... he will have had an Email answer, but he wanted to see his name in print !!!!!!!!

Hammersmith Palais to make way for offices and a restaurant [a legendary venue closes]

The prospective demolition of the Hammersmith Palais in London, England, to make way for offices and a restaurant has dealt a fresh blow to the diversity of London's live music scene. The news emerges during a period when there is also a question mark over the long-term future of another iconic venue in the capital, writes David Davies.

A meeting of Fulham and Hammersmith Council's planning committee on January 22 granted conservation area consent to developers Parkway Property, clearing the way for the Palais' demolition. While there is a stipulation that Parkway must begin work on its development immediately after the existing building is removed, the committee ultimately decided that the loss of original interior features and residents' complaints about antisocial behaviour meant that an original decision to permit demolition in 2001 should be upheld.

"We recognise that some people will have fond memories of the golden era at the Hammersmith Palais, and it is true to say it played a huge part in West London's music scene," said councillor Lucy Ivimy in an official statement. "Sadly, the golden era for the Palais is long gone."

The news heralds a decisive full-stop to the Palais' 87-year history. Originally opened as a jazz club, it is arguably best-known for hosting legendary performances by the Sex Pistols and The Clash in the late 1970s. It's latter-day operator is Bar Club, whose directors were unavailable for comment at press time.

For some, the loss of the Palais highlights a deficiency in the capital's live music network. "We have lots of intimate venues and big hangar-sized halls, but the mid-sized venues are under threat," says Paul Stokes, news editor of NME/NME.COM. "[They] give audiences a chance to appreciate growing bands in an appropriately sized venue. The Palais was great for this as it was wide and airy, and offered good views."

Meanwhile, there is also an ongoing campaign to safeguard the future in its present form of legendary rock haunt the Astoria in Charing Cross Road, which was sold to property developers Derwent Valley for £23.75m in June last year. The venue remains under lease to Mean Fiddler until December 2008.

"Schizophrenia beats being alone."

Please state that an attachment is genuine.  [ There are so many viruses about ]

get many gags and lots of comical attachments, as you can gather ... sadly most of them we have to leave unopened.  It is a sad fact of life that many attachments today are vindictive virus carriers meant to destroy systems ... sad but true [be careful!  we have been caught badly twice]

If you send an attachment [and we love funny attachments] state clearly who it is from and that it is a funny!  That will help us enormously.   We will know it is genuine.

"If at first you don't succeed, redefine success."

Good Visual Laugh?  [ This is not a laugh really ... the cover of a DVD of me producing in Italy ... what an experience? ]

This is the cover of a DVD being released next week in Italy.  No one could speak English .... boy, did I have to brush up on my Italian,.... FAST!

Tip of the Week [ Vista? Should you upgrade? Words of wisdom from Bob ]

Should I upgrade? With the new release of Microsoft's Operating system Vista, many people are facing this question.

The short answer is not right away. All operating systems take a while to settle down and iron out the bugs, no matter how much testing goes into it. Using XP was a hassle until the service packs came out, when it became much more stable and secure. Wait until the first service pack comes out before buying it off the shelf.

If you're using your PC just to surf the web, do email and use office programs you really don't need the extra functionality of Vista. For a lot of people XP works just fine, and they should keep using it until it doesn't. If that's you, wait until you need a new PC, then get one with Vista on it.

If you do want to run the latest and greatest operating system on your machine, the best way to upgrade is to buy a new PC.
That way it'll come pre-installed and you won't have the inevitable headaches that come with updating an operating system, and you'll be sure the hardware is up to scratch. If you buy a computer next year chances are it will come with Vista on it anyway.

Most people will need to buy a new PC anyway to take full advantage of Vista's features, since it puts a lot of demand on hardware. The bottom line here is that if you are thinking about running it on a low end machine - forget about it.

To get the full functionality of Vista, you need a minimum of a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and a beefed-up graphics card. Keep in mind these are the bare minimum requirements. Ideally you want more if you want your computer to run smoothly.

I have used every release of Windows since "Day 1" - remember that first ugly purple screen?  If you have a functioning XP system now that is meeting your needs, I can see little reason to upgrade at this time.

Subscriber's Section [ a question from a lyric writer - could it help you? ]

Hi Dec,

I guess I am looking for advise on "Who do I trust to produce my songs and get them into the hands of Country Music Artist?"  Thank you for you advise!

My Reply:

Our rules are "one short reply to ONE question FOR NON-MEMBERS, Members of 'The Serious Writers Guild' have unlimited personal access to Dec by direct telephone, Fax and Email , apply at https://secure.mistral.co.uk/makehits/swgappsecure.htm ".

Hi F***

<<<<<history: Good Morning Dec, I have written about 12 song lyrics and forwarded a couple to Paramount Group in Nashville.  They sent me a contract stating that not everyone has this privelege, but they feel my songs are worthy.  I set out to find a guitar player to assist with a demo to accompany my vocals.  After a year of searching, I found a fellow who plays in a band and has a small studio which he is producing out of.  He hasn't much experience with country music (my venue).  He seems to know his stuff but who am I to judge with my limited knowledge?  I guess I am looking for advise on"Who do I trust to produce my songs and get them into the hands of Country Music Artist?"  Thank you for you advise! F*** >>>>>>

Late evening here [grin!] 7.30pm ... Why am I still writing Emails, helping music folk?  I must love it...I guess!

First, let me say that Hit lyric writers are like gold dust and much sought after ..... Second, let me say truthfully that it is IMPOSSIBLE to stumble on the methods and secrets of hit lyric writing and hit music making while strolling on the beach.  As Sir Paul McCartney says:  "words without music are poetry".  How true.

I have a reputation for straight talking and also a reputation for stopping music folk wasting money and throwing good money after bad.

<<<<<<<<I have written about 12 song lyrics>>>>>>>>>

A 'career' songwriter will write 300 'start points' per year .... 30 will become 'almost' songs ... 5 will be recorded and 3 will make dosh .... One may make enormous money..... That is the truth of it!  So 12 lyrics, without the experience to know what a hit song is ?????????

<<<<<<<<<They sent me a contract stating that not everyone has this privelege>>>>>>>>>

It is a point I have to make ten times a week to the members of my Serious Writers Guild :  "a contract is only a piece of paper ... It is worthless .... Unless you write a HIT song that is sellable, makes money and is WANTED by the public."  I also point out that ANY publishing company will sign ANY writer ... Again it is only a piece of paper .... It is different if they offer $50,000 advance [recoupable against royalties] or $100,000 signing fee [non recoupable].

<<<<<<<<After a year of searching, I found a fellow who plays in a band and has a small studio which he is producing out of.>>>>>>

These guys are everywhere !!!!!!

But the one you want is the chart orientated [whether that be country chart or mainstream pop] producer who can turn your lyrics into multi million selling songs ....
We have over 100 active music makers at any one time looking for lyric writers [HIT lyric writers]  www.makehits.co.uk/collaboration.htm

<<<<<<<<<He hasn't much experience with country music (my venue)>>>>>>

That could be a good thing [Shania and Mutt Lange?]  If he is hip hop orientated that is brilliant ... All hit music today is influenced by hip hop.  But make sure he can tell you what the Top Three records are this week on Billboard.  If he can't ... Run a mile!  There is no mileage [or money] in retro songwriting.

<<<<<<<<I guess I am looking for advise on"Who do I trust to produce my songs and get them into the hands of Country Music Artist?"  Thank you for you advise! F***>>>>>>>

What I would suggest, is that you LEARN your business ... What you are attempting is like an amateur brain surgeon walking into an operating theatre and expecting to perform neurosurgery.... Both professions are as complex and as disciplined.

I can definitely show you the way.  Simply because I have had so many hits myself.

The only place I know where you can learn the skills and have total access to someone who has had all the world wide hits [me!] is at http://www.makehits.com where you will learn about 'How to Make A $Million From Your Music' - the award winning ten month programme designed to make YOU a success.

The gags: .....    from Phil  [ Sad ... but so funny! ]

He ordered one hamburger, one order of French fries and one
drink.  The old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully
cut it in half.

He placed one half in front of his wife.

He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing
them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in  front of his wife.

He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then
set  the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few
bites of hamburger, the people around them kept looking over and
whispering.

You could tell they were thinking, "That poor
old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the  two of them."

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came  to the
table. He politely offered to buy another meal for the  old
couple.  The old man  said they were just fine - They were used to
sharing everything.

The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn't
eaten a bite.  She sat there watching her husband eat and
occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.

Again the young man came over and begged them to let  him
buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said
"No, thank you, we are used to sharing  everything."

As the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly
with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old
lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked "What is it you
are waiting for?"

She answered:

"THE TEETH."
