'Toastmasters' - what a good idea

You can imagine, after all my years in the Music Industry, my years with The Grand Order Of Water Rats, Variety Club, Patron of Lark in the Park Charitable Foundation, that I would be a good speaker?  Well yes I am...or at least I like to think I am.

Recently I was talked into joining 'Toastmasters' here in Eastbourne...a new chapter of the International Organisation.

On Friday, at The Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, I was asked to deliver a tribute to Danny La Rue, a hugely popular female impersonator here in the UK... a true legend.  I was terrified!  But hey, I'm a good talker?  Then I thought I would read up on a notes I got at the last meeting of Toastmasters.  I used some new tricks that I learned from them to design a tribute to Danny  The other speakers were monster names in the UK:  Ronnie Corbett, Barry Cryer and Roy Hudd.  Boy was I in big company.  Okay, I am a big name in the UK....in the music game ... not in the 'talking' game.

The Tricks Worked

I just could not believe how those tricks worked.  My bit was a huge success.  and Members of The Serious Writers Guild who were there loved it.  The venue was The Royal Lancaster Hotel...last Friday at lunchtime.

My advice?

Check out the Toastmasters website http://toastmasters.org/ you can find a club, perhaps local to you, you will meet some go-ahead exciting people and perhaps find you have a talent that you did not know you had.  Even for a seasoned talker like me I could pick up some extra stuff that made such a difference.

Good night with Gordon

We had a good night last night [Sunday] with a load of my Show Biz pals.  Gordon Giltrap pitched up.  Probably the world's finest acoustic guitar player.  What a nice guy.  We were discussing a neat trick he has devised with a Boss sampling pedal.  I won't spill the beans on what it is but I can't wait to see him include it in his concerts.

If you ever get a chance to see a Gordon Giltrap concert....go!  You will be astonished.  http://www.giltrap.co.uk/

Gordon is featured on the cover of 'Acoustic' magazine this month....check it out at good newsagents and bookshops....great article.  We're also going to work together on some of his new stuff....can't wait.

"Dec, did you realise that you are really a philosopher" - Gordon Giltrap

Who makes the most from a recorded song?

"So if I become a songwriter, I can be a millionaire? The answer is yes, but it takes a bit more than that. Your song has to be out to the public, getting heard, not lining the shelves of your closet. To have that song make that million dollars, it has to be produced into a recording that is on a popular CD, in a hit movie, in a successful TV Series, etc.

Who is most interested in the tune that you wrote. The answer is you. Who is most interested in getting a recording of your song produced? The answer is you. Who is the BEST person to produce a recording on your song? The answer is a resounding YOU ARE.

If you put out your song locally, it could become a gold record, but it doesn't have to. Putting out your song in a local area release also gets it exposed to national artists that may want to do their own version of your song. Any time another artist does the song, the song writer is paid. The songwriter is paid, at full rate, for all "catalogue sales" and any repackaged "greatest hits" releases, plus high up-front fees and "residuals" for the song's use in moves, commercials, etc. With all of these sources of income, the song writer is likely to take in as much as $1 Mill for a tune that was a million-selling hit song.

The  Fourth Search Engine Optimisation tip:

For those with  Music Web sites.

First tip I gave you was to link to successful sites relevant to what your site is hoping to achieve.  You can do no better than link to us at our three sites:    www.makehits.com/addurlcom.htm  www.makehits.co.uk/addurl.htm  and www.liveperforming.com

Many have done that ... you will notice the change in your search engine positions.

Have you noticed a section at the start of your source code for your web pages entitled 'content'?  This will be contained in the usual <>.

It is important to realise that that 'content' is your sales pitch.  The 'title' is the short title that most Search Engines will pick up on when they spider your site.  That will have the main keywords repeated in various ways and not be more than 11 words.

But the <content> is where you 'sell' your wares.  But be careful to include your main keywords as much and as many times as you can....without making it sound gibberish.  Some Search engines will actually use this 'content' description  when they display the results of a particular search.  Check out some sites who are in competition with you and 'borrow' some of their 'content' ideas.

Chart Comment:

No change at the top of the USA chart ... all settled down nicely ... and just gentle change in UK charts and the top of the UK shop chart occupied by my favourite band ... and they have been for some years ... I just love their naive approach and the great production...they are pretty tasty looking as well....Sugababes.

Yes, The Pussycat Dolls make it four weeks at the summit this weekWe can twist things however we want but the bottom line is that as far as chart music was concerned, September was a bit shit. OK so Kanye West and 50 Cent were making the hip-hop fans happy but for everyone else we were stuck with some half-arsed dance records and same old same old R&B. Even the biggest selling single of the month 'Don't Cha' was tired old R&B dressed up in new clothes. This week however it is a different matter. The UK charts this week go POP! in quite spectacular fashion. It's as if the record industry has been holding off its best work until just this moment, to give us all a musical sugar-rush and remind us of just how good it can be at times.

Subscriber's Section:

A question  on CD length and live performing.

" Dear Dec,

I would like to ask you what is the minimum  length of time an album should be as far as a record company is concerned?  As I look in the music shops it seems to be an average of about 12 songs , James Blunt's album is 39mins and Katie Melua's is 41mins.

I have written 11 and allowing for a few seconds between each song it comes to a total of 33mins.
I am going to start playing live soon , but I wanted to have written an album's worth of songs first, as that was my original goal.   (I bought your publishing company package a couple of years ago and always recommend it to any songwriters I meet!)

                       Regards      N ***

My Reply:

 N***

There is no set time length for a CD .... other than the requirement that a single CD should not be more than 30 minutes [may be slightly wrong on this]

It is simply the feeling of 'value for money' that has to be brought over on a CD album.  Folk feel cheated when they buy a U2 album and get 9 tracks...even though some may be 7 minutes long.

It is the 'perception' that is important.

We had a monster album with my band which was titled '16 Great Songs' .... that immediately brought over the value for money aspect.  The argument could be that we didn't need to convey that when we were Number One in the chart anyway ... but the marketing proved right.

The rule of thumb is "the less known you are the more value for money you should portray".

It is important not to get hung up on the minutiae of this business.....you are best spending the time creating Potential Hit material  rather than worrying about small things .

<<<<<<<<, I am going to start playing live soon , but I wanted to have written an album's worth of songs first>>>>>>>

You would be well advised to create your presentation on the basis of 70% covers [in your own individual, identifiable style...not Karaoke] and 30% your own material.....and whatever you do, do not announce them as your own material...that way they stand or fall on how much the audience appreciate them.

The gags:  [ a very irreverent gag?]

Paddy had been drinking at his local Dublin pub all day and most of the night.

Mick, the bartender, says "You'll not be drinking any more tonight, Paddy".

Paddy replies "OK Mick, I'll be on my way then".  he spins around on his stool and steps off.  He falls flat on his face.

Shoite" he says and pulls himself up by the stool and dusts himself off.

He takes a step towards the door and falls flat on his face.  "Shoite, Shoite!"  He looks to the doorway and thinks to himself that if he can just get to the door and some fresh air he'll be fine.  He belly crawls to the door and shimmies up to the door frame.  He sticks his head outside and takes a deep breath of fresh air, feels much better and takes a step out onto the pavement.

He falls flat on his face. "Bi'Jesus... I'm pissed," he says.  He can see his house just a few doors down, and crawls to the door and shimmies up the door frame, opens the door and shimmies inside.

He takes a look up the stairs and says "No feckin' way". But he crawls up the stairs to his bedroom door and says "I can make it to the bed".  He takes a step into the room and falls flat on his face.  He says “Feck this, I got ta stop drinking," and falls into bed.

The next morning, his wife, Jess, comes into the room carrying a cup of coffee and says, "Get up Paddy.  Did you have a bit to drink last night?"

Paddy says, "I did Jess.  I was pissed.  But how'd you know?"

Mick called...... You left your wheelchair at the pub"
