I sometimes look and wonder in awe.

When it approaches the end of the year I look and wonder in awe at the success stories from members of The Serious Writers Guild and guys who have simply bought the books and programs available from us.

For instance, just glance down further at the 'thank you's' and realise that in a short year or two these guys have gone from being broke [or d*mn near close to it] to being swimming in dosh.  And all from music [their love!] or music related businesses....as I always say: "there is more than one way to skin a cat".

John took me to lunch.

John Seiffer, for instance, came down to Eastbourne to take me to lunch and personally thank me for his success.  His story was awesome.  He got stranded in New Zealand with personal and financial problems.  Maxed out his cards and was virtually bankrupt.  The big moment in his life was somehow scraping together the pennies to buy 'How to Make A $Million From Your Music'.  He devoured it.  Used all the methods, particularly the business methods, and the rest is history.

The most important thing he did?

The most important part of the deal was that he called me constantly.  That is the real benefit.  When you have a problem in music who do you call?  Charlie down the pub who has never had an ounce of music success will certainly give his advice.  But if he can give such advice, why is he not a success?  John realised that it is priceless to have someone on the end of the phone that will genuinely help and give the advice from 'real experience of Hit making'.

Guys like me, who have had the massive success world wide, will instantly give the right advice....solve the problem in two seconds flat....and we love it!  Just remember that all genuinely successful music guys are genuinely nice people...it's just a fact of life.  Maybe that is why success comes?

"Teach and you shall receive"

Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

If you have the problem, I can solve it!  Fast!

As all guys who have called me or contacted me by Email letter, fax, know, if you have a problem, I can solve it.  I just love problems.  Nothing makes me come alive more than a tough problem.

"If he looks bored or glum I just find him a good problem...that makes him happy"

Lady Grade about her husband, the incredible Lord Lew Grade

So yes, I do look in wonder and awe at the success guys are having through simply becoming one of the gang in The Serious Writers Guild, the guys who had the guts to swallow their pride, realise they were going nowhere doing it their own way and bite the bullet, and get 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music"...makes sense to me!.  But then, maybe I shouldn't wonder?

What an idea from John Waterman

I have a lot of respect for John Waterman who publishes 'Bandit', the A&R tip sheet newsletter.  I like guys who are dedicated and work hard...check this out:

Hi Dec.....I've been inspired by your encouragement to give away things and share knowledge!  Consequently I have decided to give all your 'One Minute' readers, who have yet to try Bandit, an exclusive deal !
A 4 month subscription to Bandit for zilch!

I have set up a special version of my quarterly card standing order subscription page so that your friends can sign up for a subscription but not pay a thing until March, therefore getting the Dec-March issues for zilch.
If they find Bandit's information not useful they can cancel any time in the next 3 months and not pay a penny.

The exclusive url for this 'one off' is http://www.banditnewsletter.com/decccsointr.htm

As this is so generous I will have to withdraw it when I get back to the office in the New Year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy & Successful New Year

John

By the way, just to prove how good John's 'Bandit' is:

I received this Email from a member:

Hi Dec,

I joined Bandit 2 years ago and send material co-written with the kids to publishers.

One of these contacts has turned up trumps in the form of B*** Records who wish to use a track I sent (co-written with a 16 year old female) on an album and as a single release for a new artist they have, and a contract will be forthcoming. Are there things I need to do immediately eg get in touch with PRS, join MCPS tomorrow, join the MU, hide in cupboard? Any advice would be very welcome.
All the best,
M** A*****

Be careful who you contact re. funding

I had a call from Chris Lord [Shaw's Trust] during the week and we discussed the way Charities will fund music guys in their careers.  Yes, a lot of charities will.  But, as with Chris's charity, they have strict guidelines.  Chris's charity is almost specifically for those living in the Rochdale [UK] surroundings.  Also, only for those wanting a 'leg up' in life.  Those who have found it hard up till now.  So, research first before you make an application to a Charity or local Council.  If they can't help you, they more than likely will suggest the right people to contact.  Whatever you do, don't pester them.  Remember they are snowed under with unsuitable applications.  Make sure you fit the criteria before applying.  Research!

Music words of wisdom from a Member:

Rules are same everywhere, any style of music :

1) make your point (what are you trying to say memorable and meaningful)

2) do it quickly

3) make it interesting getting there.

Good merchandising Site?

Good site from a Member for merchandising....of course the best advice is in 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music'....where you get the 'real' advice.

Why aren't you there Dec? Have you any idea how much you're needed?

This has been a fantastic year for us. We have supported Albert Lee and Hogan's Heroes, Country Joe (and the Fish) McDonald, the original Elvis Presley's TCB Band, Paul Young and Los Pacaminos, Hayseed Dixie (OK, that was in disguise as 3 Card Trick, but it still counts!). We also got to play our first open air festival at "Wolvestock" and had a number 20 on the UK Indie Country chart with "Ride The Lion"......   Highway Dave

Dec, I can't believe the money I am making.  And it's all through having you as a mentor.  John Seiffer

============================

The effect of reading your stuff also added to my pride. I am PROUD to be a part of the greatest family and, as such, am very protective towards it too....

By the end of the first page - FIRST page - we all know our places. Now, for me, I actually loved this no end. I NEEDED to be TOLD in NO uncertain terms that *I* don't know what I'm talking about - shut up - and LISTEN! So, I did. And I actually sat at your feet and heard you. I am very fussy who my mentor is. Oh yes, very choosey but you? By heck, you spoke my language and so it was nothing to me to shut up and be told.

Dec. You're a big man. I adore you and owe you so much. You have to know this.

Chart Comment:

Change at the top, which let's face it was not totally unexpected. With all the publicity generated by Steve's spectacular debut, he has made it to the top. At the top last week, the 2004 vintage of Band Aid spends a second week at the summit with 'Do They Know It's Christmas'.

I felt it would be good to show the reply I sent to the guy mentioned above who had such a good result with 'Bandit':

Hi Dec,

Sounds good.

~You have done the most important thing and that is start your own Publishing Business [I hope you have done that as the manual describes?  www.makehits.co.uk/publishing.htm

You will have issued an assignment contract in the names of the writers...you and the girl?  In the percentage split agreed?

When you have the release date and catalogue number of the record, plus the record company name then you have to join PRS as a member.  The girl should as well, although that is not your responsibility.  She should know or find out these things.

You then have to make the choice.  If you feel that the release will make enough money to cover the cost of joining PRS as a Publisher Member then you should join.  As I say in the manual there is no point joining before you know money is coming in.  In addition, PRS will put every obstacle in your way as they don't want time wasters...they want money making Publishing Companies and Members.

When you get membership then it is necessary to register a copy of the assignment contract with them.

MCPS only refers to record makers who want to release a record.  The record company/distributor pays MCPS for a license to print a notified number of records.  This license money is handed over to PRS, who in turn, hand it to the Publishers and writers.

I am told that MU is a lost cause.  I note from fellow music makers that they forgot their mission in life along the way and not much respect is given to them.  There is little necessity to join MU other than to avail of their brilliant rates of musical instrument insurance cover and public liability cover.  I highly recommend the MU for anything to do with musicians/music maker's insurance, pensions etc.  I am also told that next year will see a massive push to change the image of the MU and bring it more in line with the requirements of today's music makers.  I have been asked to share a stage with their representatives...I look forward to it.  I admire those willing to adapt.

The main point to remember is that you must have all the documentation re. PRS ready for when the release date is.  Then things move very fast.  You must be prepared.
