You couldn’t make it up!  [ vitamins only available on prescription? ]

Some of you will be familiar with this, others you may not be aware of what parliament is about to do in your name.

Unless we take this last opportunity and act now we will not be able to buy vitamins or health/nutritional supplements in the UK without a doctor's prescription - they will be banned from 31st December 2009.

You may think this can't happen, you may think "why haven't I heard about this before".

Despite considerable pressure already exerted our government is still planning to implement this law - UNLESS THERE IS MASSIVE OPPOSITION it will be passed into law..

Like many health and safety matters this was started with good intentions, in 1962 by the United Nations, to establish international free trade foods but has become a major threat to our civil liberties and freedom of choice.

As the song says: YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT TILL ITS GONE

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (What an image)  Karen - age 7

Password Protect  [stop those nosy parkers ]

If you have a nosy co-worker [ or children, wife, partner ] who looks to see what you were doing when you leave your laptop or desktop, there is a way to stop them. You must set your screen saver to come on after a certain number of minutes. (Everyone uses a screen saver – Right?)

If you  want to keep prying eyes from your computer, then right-click your desktop and choose "Properties", click the "Screen Saver" tab and check "On resume, password protect".  For Vista go to start>settings>control panel>personalization>Screen Saver  … adjust the timing and click on the ‘On Resume display logon screen’.

Simple as that – now your co-worker won’t know you were writing an email to Aunt Tillie when you should have been working.  Or your good lady won’t know you were Emailing the Swedish Nanny?  As if you would?

“Hi Dec

I record on my laptop … I am terrified of having it stolen.  Are there any tips for keeping it secure and the material on it secure?

To make sure that your data in your laptop is protected, first of all you have to choose a reliable and a safe operating system. The facility to encrypt data is available in the latest systems. A secure logon apart from file level security is available in them … always use it.

The folk who have stolen the lap top from you can access data from it. Hence, it is extremely important for you to take the necessary precautions to make sure they cannot.

The next move is to provide a password to the BIOS. In some of the machines,  it is difficult to disable the BIOS passwords. They are very strong.  Get professional help with this from your friendly computer expert.

You can etch your name on the laptop along with personal information like address and phone number on the outer case.  A model shop will have a small electric etching tool … good for putting ID [identification] on microphones and studio equipment.

Commercial asset tags that are tamper resistant are easily available. This can be of help to law enforcement authorities while trying to retrieve your machine.

Make sure that your laptop is registered with the manufacturer. Write down the serial number of the laptop and keep it safe.

Today, majority of the laptops in shops have a Universal Security Slot device.  Try to source a similar device … cost around $30-$50. Keep this attached to a strong immovable object.

While you are in the office or studio, you can use a docking station.

It may be attached to your desk firmly with locking facility for your machine.

When you are not using your laptop, take out the PCMCIA cards and have them in a safe place. Configure a firewall to protect your laptop totally. You can buy stand-alone firewalls from the market like ZoneAlarm and BlackIce. These packages are a little expensive like the corporate ones.

With the surge in laptop thefts, lots of security devices have entered the market. Included among them are popular hard drive locks like motion detectors and alarms. Biometric identification devices are installed on some laptops, you can even use fingerprints to log in instead of a conventional password in these systems.

Stealthy software solutions also seem to have come. They are expected to help you locate your machine. These machines emit signals which can be tracked regularly. If you happen to misplace your laptop you must send information to the police and the internet service providers. This helps in tracking your system and retrieving it. SecureIT, CompuTrace, are some of the firms which provide the service to track your laptop in case it is lost.

In order to protect highly sensitive and classified data, the NTFS file system is very effective. This system provides almost complete protection to your data.

And finally back up all your files on a regular basis … stand-alone hard drives are so cheap today … 1.5 Terabyte drives are easy to buy and cheap.   Every computer in my offices and studio have their own back up.

The gags: .....      [ THE UNION ?]

A dedicated Teamsters union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels. When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam,

"Is this a union house?"

"No," she replied, "I'm sorry it isn't."

"Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?"

"The house gets $80 and the girls get $20," she answered.?

Mightily offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madam responded, "Why yes sir, this is a union house. We observe all union rules."

The man asked, "And if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?"

“The girls get $80 and the house gets $20.”

"That's more like it!" the union man said. He handed the Madam $100, looked around the room, and pointed to a stunningly attractive blonde.

"I'd like her," he said.

“I'm sure you would, sir," said the Madam. Then she gestured to a 92-year old woman in the corner, "but Ethel here has 67 years seniority and according to union rules, she's next.".
