How to get rid of nuisance calls [ this is how you do it  ]

In most countries world-wide it is an offense to cold call on the telephone without the phone owner’s permission.

So, who polices this?  Who can you call if you are pestered?  Who will permanently remove your number from all lists?

Easy, peasy ….

In the UK simply call 0800.398893 [freecall]  An organisation called TPS [Telephone Preference Service]

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.

Just call and follow the prompt instructions to register the phone you get the calls on.  Takes two weeks to completely eradicate the calls .. so be patient.

Web Site: http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/  You can register as many numbers as you like.

The general line is 020.7291.3320.  There will be a TPS type organisation in your country … simple to find.

Hart Productions presents The Guitar Frame [what a brilliant decoration idea?]

Hart Productions has introduced The Guitar Frame, a handsome, unique and practical way to hang electric and acoustic instruments in any kind of living environment. For the first time, The Guitar Frame lets guitarists and recordists hang their instruments in an attractive padded frame that allows fast, easy access to the guitar while protecting the instrument and enhancing the decor of a room.

The Guitar Frame is ideal for recording and practice studios, living spaces, rehearsal rooms and any setting where players want to get to their guitars without hanging them directly onto the wall, an approach that can damage the instrument and restrict access.

Equipped with a hanging cleat for quick, easy installation on any type of wall, The Guitar Frame features a standard guitar hanger or custom "hand grip" hanger by Grip Studios to allow instant access to the instrument.

The Guitar Frame is also available from Hart’s custom shop in special sizes for jumbo acoustics and odd-shaped electric guitars. Prices start at $374.99 depending on the specific style, size, materials, and configuration.

Stop Burning Bridges: [Or Your Career Might Go Up In Flames!]

I was speaking at an affair last night [check out http://www.DecCluskey.co.uk ] and, afterwards, it amazed me how artists and writers were bad mouthing all agents, managers, promoters … weird?

I have the highest regard for those in control in the music industry … yes, I have met a few bad guys but generally speaking they do a hard job very well, very efficiently [or they don’t survive] and always have the artist’s well-being at heart – that is my experience.  They are almost universally honest … else they don’t last.

If you feel they are all crooked … try being one for twelve months …. I did …. soon wakes you up.  You begin to realise how hard it is to get any commission from the artist you got the booking for.

Agents: “This would be a great business if it wasn’t for the artists”

Artists:  “This would be a great business if it wasn’t for the agents”

A few are bad, but this is also a business of good people, who’ll give you opportunities and chances and help you out when you least expect it. That’s why it’s so important that you, as musicians, as writers and as a band, act professionally and respectfully regardless of the behaviour of those you encounter.

Always be Mr. Nice Guy.

“Hi Dec

Attached please find an analysis of the number of differing words in “Complicated”.  29 seems pretty accurate.

I must say I was amazed at how right you are in having few different words in a commercial track.

Your ’57 Secrets of a Hit Record’ is spot on.

Thanks a million for that very useful analysis.  May I use it?  And thank you for the kind comments on ’57 Secrets’ … yes, it is an invaluable tool.  http://www.makehits.com/57Secrets.htm

You are right, the number 29 is simply an interesting number....meant to convey that 99% of novice writers construct lyrics with words that are too diverse, too numerous....and mostly too complicated and simply boring.

In forcing yourself to re-use fewer, more interesting, words throughout the piece you increase memorability and commercialism....fact!

The great writers understand this and strive to cut down the number of differing words to a minimum.  This is called the honing process .. can take 3 months of hard work after the initial song is written … novices do not understand this, so don’t do it … hence …. no success.  The process can continue right into the recording studio.

There has never been a successful 'system' for constructing lyrics or toons.  A lot have tried.  The best system so far is writing from the heart with a unique, hooky title....working much harder on perfecting a line to repeat 8 times rather than 8 differing lines.  Being aware that it is impossible to be over-commercial.

But finally knowing that the 'magic' and fairy dust comes from the performance of the complete vocal arrangement.

Regards

The gags: .....      [ From Rory ]

A Polish immigrant went to the DMV to apply for a driver's license.

First, of course, he had to take an eye sight test.

The optician showed him a card with the letters ... 'C Z W I X N O S T A C Z.'

'Can you read this?' the optician asked.

'Read it?' the Polish guy replied, 'I know the guy.'
