I have rarely been excited in looking at a new idea in guitar technology.

 

In line with the current thoughts as regards muso’s [musicians] having no dosh …. Whether through the recession or through the usual moans of ‘no work about’.  Gibson have come up with two new guitars which they call their ‘Raw Power’ range.  Tough looking, no frills versions of the famous Les Paul and also the renowned SG series.  The spec. [specification] of the two is amazing for the price.

 

What is most exciting is that the ‘no frills’ approach gives a stripped down look that has that gritty, no nonsense, ‘in yer face’ sheer rock ‘n roll look.

The best guitar lessons available? [and for free!]

Arlen Roth has been my favourite ‘distance’ teacher of guitar through the years …. He makes it all sound easy and certainly, as a guitar player, I have found his stuff easy to follow and useful. 

In minutes you are sounding like you really know what you are doing and sounding like the ‘greats’.  He is all about technique and ‘tricks’ that make you sound much better than you actually are.  Of course, if you combine that with practice, then the world is your oyster. 

I studied his acclaimed ‘Rock Guitar’ tape series years ago … and still go back to it for a refresher.  It means I can play what I call “music shop” guitar.  In other words, I can audition a guitar in a showroom and, playing a few of Arlen’s licks, sound like Carlos Santana!  And not like a skeleton having a fit in a bucket …. like I used to!  I mean by that, I am a player who needs to know exactly what to play and rehearse it before I sound like I normally do … ad-libbing has never been my forte. 

With Arlen’s stuff you can string three or four of his licks together and make them suit any style and almost any tune.

RED FRIDAYS  [what a phenomenal idea] 

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason?  

British men and women who support our troops used to be called the 'silent majority'. We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for Country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing.  

Many British people, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of  Britain supports our troops.  

Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that every Briton who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.  

It will not be long before Britain is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.

Strings, Strings and more strings [where to get hard to find strings] 

If you live in a country that happens to have its own native strung instrument you will know that it is hard to find the proper strings for that instrument? 

Not many know that the origins of the 6 string guitar we know today are buried deep in Arabic strung instruments of a thousand years ago.  When I wrote ‘So You’re thinking of Recording Guitar’ I researched the origins and found the story fascinating … it is all in the book, the best manual for getting that perfect guitar sound, be it heavy rock or simple classical guitar.

The most important point to understand about song writing is that you have to write ‘hits’. 

There is little point in writing whatever comes into your head …. Be that a personal happening or experience etc. 

It is interesting to see that most artists and songwriters start their career with the simplest and most commercial pop songs …. Then they can educate their fans, through their career, to accept deeper, more meaningful material … e.g. George Michael, U2 etc. 

So the idea would be to imitate or copy current pop trends …. “why create mediocrity when you can steal genius?”

Our business is never about quantity … in other words, the number of songs written, it is all about writing ONE song that any record company or Publishing Company will snap out of your hands and have it recorded tomorrow and make a Number One … that is the only point to focus on … the only! 

Sadly, writing about one’s own experiences can lead to writing ‘poetry’ … and poetry has nothing whatever to do with hit lyrics …. That is why it is so important to ‘study’ the art of writing and making commercial, money making, sellable music.  And the only place I know is with The Serious Writers Guild.

A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would like to buy some cyanide." 

The pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?"  The lady replied, "I need it to poison my husband." 

The pharmacist's eyes got big and he exclaimed, "Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband. That's against the law!  I'll lose my license!  They'll throw both of us in jail!  All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! you CANNOT have any cyanide!" 

The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife. 

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, "Well now, that's different. You didn't tell me you had a prescription..
