I can't help but tell you of the wonderful interview with Diane Warren on Radio 4 this week.
By the way, if you don't have one of your radio buttons tuned to Radio 4 in the UK then you are missing out on some mighty knowledge and information that is essential to success in this wonderful music business. And you know by now [I hope!] that knowledge is one of the keys to your music success....right? The Arts programs have some mighty people on there plugging their latest wares.
Diane's reason for being on was the release of a new album featuring the greatest toons she has penned over the years. And she has been a powerhouse in this songwriting industry. She has the happy knack of being unable to write an uncommercial song. And the novices [guys who haven't made a $fortune yet] should sit up and take note of her methodology.
If you don't recognise the name, don't worry. She is one of those unique music guys who writes but does not perform in any way.
Celine Dion has had loads of hits with her songs. Cher owes her new found career to her. Her list of mammoth hits is endless. Her writing created 7 hits on the Billboard chart in the same week. Probably one of the most prolific song writers ever.
Considering the worries that I see in Emails sent to me by guys who don't read music, can't notate it, don't know music theory and can't play an instrument, Diane is an inspiration to all of them. She only took one music theory class at school. She still can't read music. She learned to play just a little guitar and nowadays struggles to play a simple keyboard...eventually.

And you can only sell it if people want to buy it. It has to be WANTED. She understood about rejection. She spent years and years with rejection after rejection.

On the Radio 4 program they had a musicologist, Alan Moore, who really looked down his nose at her songs...he sneered, he criticized, he mocked, but at the end of the day he had to admit that her toons were wanted, commercial, sought after, and they sold in skip loads. I dearly wanted to ask: "and how many Number Ones have you had, mate?"

Tip of the week: Most music guys pick up their Emails once in six weeks [statistics!]. They are fed up with Spam. But to be a serious music business person, today, you must deal with Emails twice daily.To avoid Spam:
Buy 'Norton 2002 Anti Virus' [around $40 at any decent computer shop] and install it. We got 24 virus attacks yesterday...so be careful...Norton will protect you [make sure it's 2002].
As you open 'Outlook Express' [the Pro's choice of Email program] go to 'view', then 'layout', then in the window go to 'preview pane', tick 'show preview pane', 'below messages', 'show preview pane header'.
Then you will always see the messages without opening them. Norton will automatically deal with even the latest viruses...and you WILL receive them...it's only time before your system will be wiped out, if you don't protect yourself!
When you see a SPAM Email in the
preview pane [porno stuff, Affiliate MLM, 'As seen on Oprah', 'You can make
$50,000 this week'] just highlight the message line [don't open it!].
Click on 'Message' in the toolbar, click on 'Block Sender' and the Outlook
program will automatically wipe the message and it will remember the senders
Email address...you won't hear from them again!
