"I went to Sardinia for a Holiday, ended up gigging for two months and then got spotted and made a film...wow!  It's called 'Everybody Smiles' released in November...unbelievable!"

"One Minute With Dec"

"My Emails are written in good humour, and should be read with a smile"

Last week saw the launch proper of our Member's collaboration service, world wide.

I get loads of guys asking me about how they can contact co-writers to assist them.  You know, lyric writers who sit alone, at home, with no one to help with the music making.  Likewise there are loads of music guys out there who are good at putting toons together but just have no lyrical capability.  Then again, there are the lyric writers who just want their lyrics to have that commercial edge that co-writing can give so easy.  Two minds are always better than one.

"You never meet a rich Hermit."

Yep, when you look at CD credits almost 95% of Hits are collaborations.  So, why do so many guys try to do it all themselves?  Beats me.  I love collaborating.  You can bounce the ideas around.  In fact, the material gets written and done in a tenth of the time.  The cleaning up and polishing takes the same time [around three months...oh - you didn't know that?]

So, all the Members will be getting 'collaboration' forms to fill in and then they will get a list of guys, all over the world, looking for specific needs.  It's then easy to co-write by snail mail post, Email, fax, telephone and best of all, by Internet.  I will advise on the best and simplest methods.  Also, the easiest and most economical.  Most importantly, the most reliable.

Apply now...it's FREE

So, any Members who want to get going straight away, just Email me and I will send the form off straight away by return Email.  You can be up and running in a half-hour...best of all it's FREE [to Members].

More top guys confirm my teaching material:

I constantly get emails confirming the success methods I give the Members of 'The Serious Writers Guild'.  Not that I need it to be confirmed, my own success and the success of my pals, in the business, shows me that it's all 'correct'.  I constantly hammer home the message that for success you have to think in the future, not even thinking in today's Hit terms will guarantee success.  You have to think six months, even a year, two years, down the line.  Cos' that's how long it will take to get your latest demo heard, enthused over, then remixed or re-recorded.  Then it takes time to get the image aligned with what the Record Company want. [no matter how good you look...and you MUST look good to have success, the 'Powers that Be' will always want to adjust something].

So you have to think in the future.  If your stuff sounds like five years ago, even three months ago then you have no chance...trust me!  Even if your latest track sits well with today's Hits....that ain't good enough.  Hear what Tracey has to say:

Tracey Richards-Edwards, A&R Manager, Warner Brothers

"Ultimately, the material should be cutting edge, not dated or corny; vocals/or rhymes must be strong & comparable (in talent) to the current crop of chart-toppers (helps if they sound even better), and they should sound as though they are confident & comfortable with their style & with their look as well. We are looking for the "next level" true talent always - no fake or contrived, unoriginal copycats."

Members of 'The Serious Writers Guild' at https://secure.mistral.co.uk/makehits/howtoappsecure.htm  will know how much I hammer that message home.

Are you promoting your music by Email or on a Web Page?

Obviously, if your emails are just a collection of ads for your tracks and you do not deliver anything of substance, or worth, to your readers, you will not have a list to which you can email for very long - because they will all quickly un-subscribe.  Don't just plug your latest musical offering with no value attached.  That is just 'spam'.  You will see tons of those type messages on the music newsgroups....I feel they are just 'cheap and nasty' and I doubt very much whether anyone actually clicks on the link and listens to the music.

Another important, and ongoing, aspect of your email list is how to get people to subscribe, thus giving you the permission you need to send emails to them legally. You can start with whatever list of emails you already have on file and build from there. You should be collecting database like mad at every Gig....are you?

Never Email to a 'bought' list:

Emailing to a 'bought' list is the pits.....also Emailing to guys, you don't know, will only antagonise them.  You will make enemies fast.

Just email those people with which you have had contact in the past, let them know you are starting a new publication and that you would like to invite them to subscribe. Next, add a subscribe address in your signature file so that each and every email you send out has it included.  Your new publication can be just a three monthly Gig list, but try to give good value with info. and news.  Content is key.  You have my full permission to copy 'One minute with Dec' to your list PROVIDED you include our details - including the www.makehits.com link and our address [for credibility].  You can also use our 'Ask Dec A Question' service by just using the link: yoursitequestion@makehits.com ... just replace 'yoursite' with the name of your site.  Then we know where the question came from...got it?

By the way, make sure your server gives you that facility.  You need an Email address facility that allows 'anything' @ your address to come through.  Just get in touch with your server and say you want 'anything'@ facility.  They may bluff and pretend they don't know what you are talking about...but any 'proper' business server will automatically give you that facility.  A great benefit is that if guys miss-spell your name, provided your site name is right you will get the emails.

If you have a web site, you will find it is one of the best ways of getting people to give you their email address.  Then you can send a link to your sample song...hopefully if you are with a proper provider then you will make a sale!  But don't hold your breath....the percentage of people who buy unknown music off the Net is miniscule.  They still all want it for FREE.  And you can't pay the rent with FREE!

It helps if you give people a reason to register their names with you, such as a free email course, free e-book, etc. Also, those placing the email registration in the visible section of the web site when it first loads, find the greatest amount of success in getting people to register.

And, historically, the center, or the right side of the web page, is the best spot to place your request for subscribers.

For those of you that can figure out the coding involved, pop- up boxes requesting a name and email are extremely   successful for gathering new subscribers.  Check out the Pop-Ups on www.makehits.co.uk and www.makehits.com .

Net music guys still want FREE????

For every 99 guys who get in touch with me hoping to change their career prospects in music, and are thrilled to find a genuine source of 'hot' advice, motivation and encouragement, there is always the one who resents the fact that I charge for the $fortune making courses and books which are the result of hours, months, years, in fact, mostly a lifetime, of research, learning and experience on my part....so I was delighted to receive this great quote by Email....sort of sums it all up really:

"He had discovered a great law of human action, without knowing it - namely,
that in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to obtain."
Mark Twain

Woody Allen

Tip of the week:  "For a stunning, unheard before reverb trick, make up a patch with a long reverse  reverb.  Now put a long predelay in front of it timed to the BPM of the piece you want to use this effect in.  My Members know how to do this [grin].  Now turn the direct signal to zero.  This means that if you play a short guitar stab [say] then the sound will appear in reverse, fading in fast from out of nowhere.

Use it in mono - panned to one side...."

Gag of the Week [still no shortage of gags from subscribers!]:

"A pipe burst in a doctor's house. He called a plumber. The plumber arrived,
unpacked his tools, did mysterious plumber-type things for a while, and
handed the doctor a bill for $800.

The doctor exclaimed, "This is ridiculous! I don't even make that much as a
doctor!."

The plumber waited for him to finish and quietly said, "Neither did I when I
was a doctor."
