"One Minute With Dec"

"My Emails are written in good humour, and should be read with a smile"

When you are in the professional sector of music, you really need to consider only dealing with the music equipment suppliers who support the professional sector of the Industry.

Two, really stick out, in my book.

Here's a quick story:

A member of The Serious Writers Guild [a mighty session guitar player] is on tour with 'All About Eve'. He ran into a problem with his Marshall gear, well, his footswitch, to be precise. He Emailed me for help.....

1st lesson: Only deal with Organisations where The Boss is available and answers the emails personally....ask me how many Organisations there are in the world like that? Quick answer? You've guessed it....I'd say: about ONE!

Dave Emailed me....I immediately got on to Jim Marshall....at lunch....his P.A., Emma, was with him....business lunch. I got on to Steve Yelding, the head of manufacturing at Marshall Amplification....he was at lunch with Jim and Emma...pulling off a major deal. They now put 6,500 Marshall units into the world music market each week. [yes....six thousand five hundred!]

Thanks Dec, I got a phone number. Got put through (immediately) to a guy called Phill in the service dept. Phill was a diamond - getting the footswitch - which is manufactured elsewhere- replaced free of charge by return post. Brilliant service, please pass my regards to "The Boss" when you next see him. Stunning amp, stunning service. Thanks for your time Dec.

regards

Dave Menzies

2nd Lesson: Only deal with guys who actually get the job done...no promises, just action.

Meanwhile, I got an Email back from Jonathan Ellery one of the directors at Marshall....

Hi Dec That is good news, we try and match our service to our product Top Quality, if you have any other problems just drop me a line. I have copied your reply to our service department it is always nice to have a complement.

Hope you and Sandy are both keeping well, see you soon.

Regards

Maybe that shows you that the combination of 'The Serious Writers Guild' and the top music manufacturers really works? And all that happened in one hour!

The other great name:

John Brown from Fender is really quite the greatest guitar company guy around......

The Water Rats [the most prestigious Show Biz charity in the world, based in London, England] ran a benefit 'do' on Friday night. The night was devoted to 'Skiffle and Rock'. Our King Rat, this year, is the legendary Chas McDevitt who wrote and had the 2.5 Mill Number One hit with 'Freight Train', all those years ago. He presented the night. John Brown gave us a stunning Fender Acoustic guitar that you would die for to raffle....just like that!

By the way:

If you can, check out the Finnish band who appeared that night: 'The Verner Brothers'. If you are into unusual music, country, skiffle and original folk music then you will be gobsmacked....I was! And I am not a fan of this music....quite 'the business'.

Back to 'Fender' man, John Brown:

He also brought along a new acoustic/electric Fender guitar for us to look at....and also a Fender miniature strat. Wow! I fell in love with it...high, tone and a half vibs. are a doddle with this little beauty [sorry for the guitar lingo!]

John really looks after the pro. players. And that is why I plug his products....I play a Strat. mostly, on stage, because of the care and dedication he shows....just like Jim! The concert playing, touring, top pros. need, and depend, on that sort of back-up. And the guys, that I plug, give it!

Thank you John - Thank you Jim.

It was quite evident on Saturday night [last night] the commitment that John and Jim have to our business.

Joe Brown, with his 'Bruvvers', was in concert, in Eastbourne [south coast of England], and invited me along. He appeared at the benefit as well! Joe is a Water Rat. The stage was awash with Marshall amps. Joe was proudly showing off his new miniature Strat in the dressing room....no doubt he will write a piece especially to feature it.

A 'MUST SEE' SHOW

In my 'How to Make A $Million From Your Music' course I advise Members of The Serious Writers Guild to get along to see 'today' chart shows....well I have to say this:

Whatever you do, in your career, get along to see Joe Brown [currently on tour in the UK]. The tricks, the stage craft, the musicianship, the guitar playing and particularly the 'front of house' mix [using the new Yamaha OSR96 digital 24 fader mixer] was just awesome. I consider that I know a lot about Show Biz presentation - but I came away with at least six new tricks!

Guitar players, in particular, will be awe struck by the guys. But drummers....please go and see the genius, Phil Capaldi, do more tricks than I have ever seen Chad Wakerman, Buddy Rich and Ronnie Verrel do...together! Just stunning!

The age old question [so old, it's boring!]:

Dear Dec,

I need your help (and I'm not just saying that because you've taught me to; I really do).

I'm looking for an Akai sampler (second hand) and haven't got a clue of what's good and what isn't. What model would you recommend for good value for money? I'm thinking along the lines of an S950, S1000 or an S2000.

My answer:

Hi Dave...

The answer is very simple.

The first of the really powerful, and really user friendly, Akai samplers was the S950. I use one. Very favoured by producers and recording people, today, for it's ease of use - and it's simplicity [Norman Cook uses two!].

The numbers mean the age and model number. So the first was 950 then 1000 then 2000 and so on...I think they are up to S6000, at the moment.

The benefit of Akai is that they are industry standard and you will find them in every reputable studio. So, if you bring along a floppy disc with a particular sample on it, they can play it. They are all retro compatible - in other words the 950 samples will work on all the later ones, but the latest ones will not work on the old ones...ok?

The Members tell me there are great bargains on the Net, so I would think that is the place to look. Ebay.com is probably the best place.

Try to find one [or two] with the most number of 'outputs'...the minimum, obviously is two [left / right stereo] but they come with 8 outs, which can be much better for mixing.

Gag of the Week [don't know where they get them but they keep rolling in!]:

George Bush and Dick Cheney are enjoying a celebration dinner at a Washington restaurant. Their pretty waitress approaches their table to take their order.

She asks Cheney what he wants, and he replies, "I'll have the heart-healthy salad." "Very good, Sir," she replies, and turning to Bush she asks, "And what would you like, Mr. President?"

Bush answers, "How about a quickie?"

Taken aback, the waitress slaps him and says, "I'm shocked and very disappointed in you. I'm sorry I voted for you." With that, the waitress departed in a huff.

Cheney leans over to Bush, and says, "Mr. President, Sir, I believe that's pronounced quiche.".
