The proof, just this week, from Members that 'How To Make A $Million From Your Music' works:
Big night tonight....
Yep, it's nice to know that I am still a 'fan' of someone. Right through my early career I was totally in awe of 'The Moody Blues' the originators of the 'concept' album. They had loads and loads of massive Number One albums 'On The Threshold of a Dream' was my favourite.
My car was full of their music....OK - it was mostly on 8 Track stereo [remember 8 track?.....whoops......giving my age away!]
Justin Heywood and John Lodge wrote one of the classic toons of all time: "Nights in White Satin". John has written mountains of music since....he was awarded two Ivor Novello awards and last year won a gong for the best IMAX film music.
We are great buddies and share a love of 'charity'.....we work a lot for charity and give that most important item...TIME! We play a lot of Celebrity Golf for The Variety Club Golfing Society.
Tonight I will be initiating John Lodge into The Grand Order of Water Rats...probably the most exclusive Show Biz Charity Institution in the world...what a night we will have...the Lodge will be swarming with 'names'.
John is living proof that to succeed in this business you have to be talented, love music, work your socks off at it...look great, act great and BE GREAT! John looks 'the business'. He walks the walk and talks the talk.
'The Moody Blues' are still one of the top three Stadium bands in the world.
Guarantees:
I get many Emails saying that what we offer sounds 'too good to be true'. I only ever have one reply to that: "on any music site on the Net or anywhere just 'read the guarantee'". You will rarely see one.....FACT. I can't remember the last time we were asked for a refund. We have a simple guarantee: "Money back at any time, for any reason...even if you don't like the color of the paper!" Is that simple enough?
I got this interesting Email from a marketing friend:
The 'Gigging Special I sent you still rumbles on:
I got an interesting Email from one of the Members re my 'democratic band' versus 'you own the band and pay the members'. You keep 50% of the money.
>>>>>Would you advise applying the 50% idea to all income i.e. ticket sales, merchandise, CD sales?<<<<<<<<
My answer:
50% after commission. And I would consider making it 50% after fuel [a mighty expense, particularly in the UK]
In other words, 50% of the net income. Personally I have always paid a 'gig fee'. But that is in a situation where we earn quite a considerable amount of money, every concert pays a different fee and, quite frankly, we go by the traditional 'showbusiness code' that the paid help should NEVER know the amount on the cheque. There are a lot of reasons for this...that 'code' has worked well in show Business since God was a boy!
Hired Help only see and only want to see the gross figure, so we never let them see it...they have no conception of expenses, commission, rehearsal costs, studio costs, equipment hire, cost of equipment movement, equipment storage, hire, servicing etc. they only see (in their heads) the gross fee...so the logic is to never let them see it. It saves the hours of endless explaining and arguing.
Best pay a set fee to band members, roadcrew etc. It's called 'swings and roundabouts'. You may travel six hours to one venue for that fee but the next night it could be ten minutes down the road. Crew and band members never think in terms of how easy a gig is...always how hard it is. Always endeavour to have a hot meal provided by the venue. Not by way of a silly 'rider' [which all venues laugh at...trust me] no, as my Serious Writers Guild Members know, there are much better ways of getting the best treatment! A hot meal is priceless in keeping good band morale.
Merchandise:
Always have the best, most outgoing, people friendly, member of the band or roadcrew in charge of merchandising. Just like a shop, if the guy behind the counter is not a good 'seller' then you will take very little money. Be cruel, check out each guy's performance with the buying public and choose the best. Two can be even better [one to take Polaroid photos, one to sell]. The other band and crew members should be actively asking for names addresses, Email addresses for the fan base.
I would suggest 5% should be given to them or 10% if you are really generous. Again, if you let them count the money you are stuffed...they, again, only see the gross figure. YOU must always be there, to sign autographs, and generally be a nice guy..but mainly as a deterrent to the staff [they will nick money!] They forget that you had to make the albums [they, more than likely, weren't on them?]...you had to front the investment to buy the stock, store it, transport it, worry about it etc. etc. Be vicious, count the stock pre-show and count it after the show...work out easy systems for this...it's worth giving it thought.
I won't divulge the fantastic systems for selling I give the members of The Serious Writers Guild in the Master Class...but let me tell you that merchandising can be a license to print money ...when done right...or a total misery if done wrong....Members get to know the very best methods...and it's easy! But not very logical. I have spent my whole career improving the systems...and they work!
As with most successful methods, in Show Business, there is NOWHERE on the Net that you will find the 'real' story...the proper methods for successful band management EXCEPT with The Serious Writers Guild....
Sean - as a Member, you can call me anytime...you know that...and I will give you every bit of knowledge I know....

An Email re the quality of 'today' songs:
I am interested to hear your comments on the recent number 1, and the potential Christmas number 1 recorded with extremely limited facilities.
The song is the key. Can you (or me...gigging musician,...... play any of the top 10 on guitar..... I don't think so!!)
The recent awards shows were a farce, with everyone miming. Did you watch the CMA awards, everything live? It wasn't all good, but there was more music in two minutes of the CMAs than the whole of the Smash Hits Party!!
I know you believe that the top 20 is everything, but consider..... the number of records sold compared to what The Bachelors used to sell!
The Top Twenty is a useful marketing tool, but it does not represent, in any way, the musical tastes of the UK.
Keep it Country,

The arguments have all been thrashed out ad infinitum.
The telling argument is that BMW salesmen sell brand new, up to the second models that the public WANT. Not what the company feels the public 'need'. Your feelings towards the charts are shared by a lot of working and would-be working musicians. They are not shared by the successful chart musicians and artists who study their craft [Pop music] and practice the latest success techniques as surgeons do, doctors do, accountants, solicitors, scientists.
The successful core of our industry is surrounded by moaning 'groaners' who would want the record buying public to like what 'they' like...sadly the public will like what the 'public' like. Show Business is unique in being surrounded by guys who feel that they should have success with ZERO effort....that is the truth of the matter. A brain surgeon trains for 18 years. A music 'wannabe' glances at the odd 'Mixmag' magazine and wishes for success....which will have success? I think we know the answer to that question.
We are the only business who allow amateurs to use our professional name....I have never heard of an amateur brain surgeon or an amateur Formula One driver but I am up to my a** in amateur singers, writers and performers! That is not a criticism...I love helping go-ahead, 'striving for success' amateurs...but I cannot stand the carping ones playing fifteen years too late music that no one wants.
Successful surgeons know that the way to success is in the latest and most innovative techniques.....sadly 97% of music people do not have the sense to realise that.

and I get bogged down in details
and miss the big picture.
It's as if I'm sitting on a beautiful beach
and instead of taking in the panoramic view of the ocean,
the warm sun and the waves gently rolling against the beach,
I'm obsessing on a single grain of sand.
Why did I spend too much time at the pc?
Why did I keep pressing, when it's so much better to relax and soar?
Take a step back and you'll come back stronger than ever."
